Despite the growing attention to the everyday, nation-building literature has paid insufficient attention to the ways in which national identity is strengthened as a side effect of measures that are not initially conceived of as nation-building activities. This article examines contemporary examples of such non-traditional processes of nation-building by reviewing the unintended consequences of political measures not directly targeting identity construction. We focus on processes of identity construction in Kyrgyzstan and Estonia that have emerged as a side effect of nation branding. In both cases, the primary goal of the national government was not necessarily to boost national identity but rather to re-brand the country for international audiences. We argue, however, that these efforts at external image projection and change have also influenced the ways in which national identities are understood, perceived, and reproduced by domestic populations.

ABSTRACTThe segregation of consumption between the Russian- and Estonian-speaking populations residing in Estonia has been common knowledge in the popular imagination, mass media publications, and academic papers. Rather than undertaking an impossible mission to identify whether these narratives are true, in this article, I show how this repertoire of stories has fostered special marketing strategies and document the emergence of a special marketing niche of companies promising to teach how to market products to mainstream or minority consumers based on their presumed mental differences. Deriving from ethnographic fieldwork, I demonstrate how mythologies about ethnic segregation in consumption paradoxically result in integration.KEYWORDS: Ethnic integrationethnic segregationassimilationRussian speakersmythologyconsumptionethnographic research Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).Additional informationFundingThis work was supported by the Estonian Research Council grants PSG48 “Performative Negotiations of Belonging in Contemporary Estonia” and PSG729 “COVID-19 Conspiracy Theories: Contents, Channels, and Target Groups.”Notes on contributorsAnastasiya AstapovaAnastasiya Astapova is an Associate Professor of Folkloristics (University of Tartu, Estonia) and a member of the Estonian Young Academy of Sciences. ABSTRACTThe article analyzes one of the Lithuanian experiments in constructing some form of pro-fascist political system during 1930s, specifically focusing on the events leading to the establishment of the Lithuanian section of the Italian-led Action Committees for the Universality of Rome (CAUR). One of its initial goals and functions was facilitation of the processes of fascistization of the country. However, even though officially the Lithuanian CAUR section functioned from 1934 and until 1939, yet, thanks to the unwillingness of the Lithuanian political elites to proceed down the path of fascism, this led to the section’s gradual demise.KEYWORDS: LithuaniaItalyfascismCAURradicalism AcknowledgmentsThis research was supported by the Lithuanian Research Council (grant number P-LIP-20-12).Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).Notes1. [Juozas Purickis]。1925. 1925。' Fašistų revoliucijos trejui metui sukaktuvės。 Fašistų spauda dėl jubiliejiniui metui。 Rytas, 1月1日;[J] . Tomkus“十字路口的民主”、V. 参见:《Atsivertimas (Citation1940)》;' Pradėtos administ mokslio paskaitos (Citation1940);Kaip norima reformuoti mūsų administracijje。Reikšmingi ministerio pirmininko A. Aleksandrovsky was well aware of the political situation in Lithuania. In fact, for quite some time Soviet Russia provided modest financial support to the opposition nationalist Tautininkai Union, its leaders, and the periodical press (for more, see: Butkus Citation2019, 536–551).4. Officially, the Institute did not receive financial support from the state, although the membership of high-ranking officials suggests that there might have been some indirect financing of its activities.6. Similar plans were considered at the beginning of 1932, when the statute of the new institute was prepared and submitted for approval by the head of the Kaunas region, but for some reason the school did not open.
