The social movement is inspiring meaningful conversation about the discriminatory practices’ that Africa women have long faced in every aspect of their lives. However, despite considerable improvement in the gender balance discourse, the worst cases of gender imbalances are still recorded in sub-Sahara Africa (SSA). Macroeconomic volatility, both as a source and a reflection of underdevelopment, is a fundamental concern for women in SSA. This paper leans empirical credence to the role of macroeconomic policies (fiscal and monetary policies indices) for gender equality in SSA from 1993 through 2017. We gathered panel data on the indices of macroeconomic policies and gender inequality in all 48 SSA countries. We employed the dynamic panel system generalised method of moments estimation procedure (dynamic system GMM) to establish a baseline level relationship between the variables of interest. We adjusted for heterogeneity assumptions inherent in ordinary panel estimation and found a basis for the strict orthogonal relationship among the variables. Our results suggest fluctuations in macroeconomic policies as a lead factor for gender equality in SSA countries. Efforts should be tailored towards balanced macroeconomic policies that can guarantee sustainable gender equality approaches to collective prosperity.

The spread of the #MeToo movement and protests against femicide have changed the digital media landscape in both global and Asian contexts. This paper aims to demonstrate that these changes are the product of a feminist, material-semiotic actor-network, and that feminist net-activism constitutes an ontological turn, an axiological intervention, and political participation, insofar as it (1) stimulates interaction between human and non-human entities; (2) actively redefines the paradigm of feminist discourse and practice; and (3) articulates feminist political issues and objectives and mobilizes political action through participatory platforms, such as online citizen initiatives. Hyper-connectivity and this ubiquitous digital media presence have broken clear boundaries, creating a new ecosystem where the feminist multitude emerges in a fourth wave of feminism constituted by digital content prosumers, using easily disseminated media to renew modalities of resistance and reshape the theoretical paradigm of feminism. The feminist multitude in the new media landscape advocates artistic creativity in the representation of the female body, which is not subjugated to the phallic economy of desire, and inscribes feminist issues and history in the digital archive.

Exploring Gender Stereotyping in Online Learning Platforms: An Empirical Study of Indonesian Pedagogical Discourse

Gender stereotyping in online learning platforms can influence how the users, especially students with specific gender roles as the label of a specific sex, are perceived. Various evidence from studies analyzing language materials have shown the significance of how gender stereotyping is represented; however, there has been relatively little empirical research specifically exploring how gender is depicted in online learning language materials. This study aims to investigate the extent of gender stereotyping represented in the learning materials of one online platform used nationally in Indonesia, using the feminist stylistic approach of Sara Mills. This study analyzes the learning materials specific to elementary school level for fourth until sixth grade and junior high school for seventh until ninth grade. This study finds that specific materials for specific grades significantly represent stereotypes through the language used in the written text. This suggests that designers and developers of online learning materials need to be aware of gender stereotyping when designing such materials for students.

The study investigated the challenges involved in women’s empowerment through adult education in Ethiopia, focusing specifically on the Integrated Functional Adult Education Program, employing social constructivist paradigm and qualitative case study design. Women who had graduated from the program, facilitators, and adult education experts participated in the study. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the first two women and one Integrate Functional Adult Education (IFAE) expert from the city administration. Chain sampling was used to select the remaining eleven women for interview and seven women for the focus group discussion. Two facilitators and one IFAE expert from the Sub City were selected through a comprehensive sampling technique. Data were gathered through interview, focus group discussions, and document review. The inductive approach to iterative steps was used to analyze and interpret the data. Analysis of the data shows that women learners’ economic problems, lack of political attention, weak collaboration between bodies concerned, husbands’ influence, and societal attitudes are challenges to their empowerment process.
