: the article presents one of the alternative versions of the soviet space heritage in kazakhstan on the example of the Zhezkazgan / Ulytau region. it was in this region, in the vicinity of the village of Baikonyr, that a “false” cosmodrome was located; it later gave its name to the official cosmodrome in the kyzylorda region. here the “subroute zones” of space launches pass, there are cosmonaut landing zones, and there is falling space debris. on the basis of field research materials collected between 2021 and 2022 the article investigates museum practices, places of memory, as well as common themes linking space infrastructure and the cultural landscape. the authors use pierre nora’s theoretical concept of places of memory as markers of the relevance or nonrelevance of the past. they examine urban rituals of the cosmonauts’ meeting, the history of the first Republican museum of cosmonautics, memories of the secret territories of the “false” cosmodrome and how the memorial to the dead cosmonauts of the soyuz11 crew was created. through an analysis of space places of memory and changes in museum policy, the dynamics of the local attitudes to the “grand space project” are shown. the study shows that interest in the region’s space heritage is maintained only by those actors who

PURITY AND ORDER: THE PERSPECTIVE OF CHILD PROTECTION SERVICES

: the article is devoted to the concepts of “cleanliness”, “dirt”, and related contexts of the professional practices in child protection services in st petersburg, Russia. for child protection service employees, “cleanliness” is expanded to the characteristics of the “correct” functioning of the family as a whole. Although ideas about the connection between childhood and cleanliness are part of the process of medicalization and standardization of child care, the inspection of apartments by child protection services allows us to identify a range of ideas that underlie the notion of “good parenting”: the ability of adults to perceive, assimilate, and adjust their lives in accordance with the recommendations of employees about cleanliness; evidence of their desire not to be separated from children; overcoming difficulties manifested primarily through disorder and dirt; their ability to sustain regularity, providing a sense of being morally upstanding adults in the eyes of child protection services. the article is based on fieldwork conducted over a period of three years (2019–2022).

WHEN SHOULD WE CRY? RITUAL WEEPING IN NAHUA (AZTEC) CULTURE IN LIGHT OF EARLY COLONIAL SOURCES

: the article examines the sociocultural context of ritual weeping among nahuas (Aztecs) in light of early colonial spanish and nahua sources. first the article analyzes historical evidence about calendar, occasional, and life cycle ceremonies in which weeping was one of the key elements. it then examines the ideological and social background of these actions, in particular the notion of tlamacēhualiztli —ritual selfmortification with the purpose to gain favour and support from supernatural beings and men of higher social position, and to reach desirable goals. the article concludes that tlamacēhualiztli was one of the basic concepts which shaped individual and collective behavior of nahuas in daily life; it was one of the main ways to construct and establish hierarchical relations within society—and between man and envi ronment. Tlamacēhualiztli ritual weeping among nahua used to be one of the main ways to smooth emotional tensions in critical situations—for example, in the case of a relative’s death in combat—and served as an effective mechanism of applying emotional pressure on supernatural forces and higher strata of society. Additionally, ritual weeping was an important component of calendar rites related to water and fertility deities, occasional rites caused by natural disasters and social crises, and rites of passage marking transitions between states of being.

: in her book, natalia Dushakova focuses on the historical memory of old Believers in Romania and moldova. this research is based on field materials which the author collected over several years in the region, supplemented by published memories of the local old Believers. the basic methodological concept in this work is formulated as “lived history”, which makes it possible to focus on the old Believers’ changing understandings of the past, as well as specifically on how they interpret history. Dushakova notices that—for old Believers—events of Biblical history are intertwined with the events of the “secular” world. in particular, she observes how old Believers remember the appearance of the schism, religious repressions, voluntary migration, and deportation. furthermore, the author discusses old Believer explanations of restrictions, various strategies of interaction with strangers, and how divisions inside the old Belief form alternative interpretations of the past.

THE TROUBLESOME KINSHIP, OR, HOW ARE FAMILY TRAGEDIES DISCUSSED IN AN ANONYMOUS ONLINE COMMUNITY

: this paper focuses on public debates about kinship and family ties in the online group “Anonim 03”—the Buryat online community on the social network “Vkontakte”. it explores why some people want to “air their dirty laundry”, telling strangers stories about intimate details of their family lives and breakdowns of mutual care, and why others will ingly participate in these discussions. this article attempts to trace not only the terms in which connections between different people of kin are defined today, but also to unravel the mechanisms and global principles that, according to the participants of this community, dictate the life of a person who has a family. observing only the presentation of family in the anonymous stories, this article argues that it is nevertheless possible to trace the circulation of the socalled “substances of kinship” according to sharon hutchinson—and simultaneously the circulation of affects, as sarah Ahmed suggests—to see what new objects are born out of this discussion. Although debates in “Anonim 03” often resemble a tV show where participants try to hurt each other, i want to argue that these debates are a much more serious process than just entertainment. i suggest that they constitute a space for ethical reasoning and fixing moral norms of kinship relations, if for a very short period.

SELF-EDUCATION VS EXTRACURRICULAR READING: SECULAR LITERATURE IN ORTHODOX THEOLOGICAL SEMINARIES AFTER THE REFORM OF
Q3 Social Sciences Pub Date : 2023-06-01 DOI: 10.31250/1815-8870-2023-19-57-61-85
J. Safronova
: the paper discusses the reading practices in orthodox theological schools after the educational reform of 1867. Analyzing the conflict over the reading of secular books by students of the Arkhangelsk theological seminary, the author questions the historiographical thesis about the existence of a profound gap between school practices and the reading program of progressive youth involved in the political protests of the 1870s. the article analyzes the infrastruc ture of extracurricular reading overseen by the seminary teachers in accordance with the charter of orthodox theological seminaries (1867). catalogues of the student and fundamental libraries, rules governing reading and reporting on what was read, and extracts from student reading reports make it possible to conclude that secular and even democratic litera ture was not banned in theological seminaries during the first half of the 1870s. on the contrary, such types of reading— provided it was overseen by teachers—was considered to be a way to prepare future pastors for debates about materialism and positivism, defending the dogmas of the orthodox church. to illustrate this thesis, the paper considers the status of Draper’s History of the Intellectual Development of Europe , ranging from it serving as a philosophy textbook to being a forbidden work, a source of antireligious ideas. in conclusion, the author suggests the existence of a significant conver gence between the selfdevelopment program of the 1870s generation and pedagogical experiments of that time—which similarly required the reading of serious literature, writing reports, and making independent judgments about texts.
