: Here we present a succesful adoption within a taxonomic family but across orders in birds of prey. From 1977 through 2021, we monitored the population of the Eastern Imperial Eagle ( Aquila heliaca , hereafter Imperial Eagle) on the territory of the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area in the Slovakia. The number of pairs gradually increased there and, altogether 15 pairs were monitored each year since 2018. In 2021, we found the Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo) chick in the nest of the Imperial Eagle in the Ipeľská pahorkatina Hills during the regular monitoring of breeding pairs. It is generally the first known documented record of a young Common Buzzard reared by the Imperial Eagle without human intervention. Parental care of the Imperial Eagle adults on the nest is described and possible alternative explanations for this case of adoption are discussed

. In this study, we present the second documented evidence of the occurrence of the Baillon’s Crake in Slovakia, after 56 years. In order to improve knowledge about the ecology of rare species, this study provides a comprehensive overview of all published papers in Slovakia from history to the present. In addition, it contains a description of the current habitat and the song of a male recorded for the first time on 25.05. 2021 at the locality of Pánska Morávka (cadastral area of Malé Leváre, western Slovakia). During four days of recording (from 30.05. to 01.06. 2021 and 03.06.2021), we identified one male song with relatively high calling activity (in average 8394 vocalizations per night), with the peak exclusively during night hours (01:00-03:00 a.m.). After eight nights of monitoring, the male fell silent. The breeding attempt was not confirmed. Finally, our results suggest that Pánska Morávka represents a potential site for the occurrence of Baillon’s Crake, one of the rarest birds in Slovakia.

: The first documented nesting of the Eurasian Scops Owl (Otus scops) in northern Slovakia (Oravice area in the Western Tatras in 2021) is described. The nest was found in an occupied former woodpecker nest cavity and a fledgling was observed. All known observations of the species in northern Slovakia to date are summarized and the species range and population trends in Europe are discussed. This breeding may be related to the increase of the European population and the northward expansion of the species.

: In most birds, males are responsible for territory defence and mate attraction using a song. Females’ song is less frequent and usually produced for other reasons. The female song has also been reported in Hazel Grouse (Tetrastes bonasia ), but has not received sufficient attention. In the northern part of the Horná Orava Protected Landscape Area, we recorded songs of ten females and nine males from 2014 to 2020. Individuals were provoked by imitating a species-specific song with a lure. This work presents the basic acoustic traits of Hazel Grouse song and sex-based song differences. In addition, we point out the different functions of the male and female songs. Specifically, males sang longer songs at higher frequencies than females. Moreover, in spring, males actively responded to the imitation of the female song, suggesting that the females attract males by singing. In the spring and autumn, males reacted to the imitation of songs of both sexes, indicating that the male songs serve to defend the territory. Females responded exclusively to the imitation of female songs, thus indicating that they were

. We detected occurrence and nesting of Eurasian Craig Martin (Ptyonoprogne rupestris) for the first time in Slovakia. One nesting pair with four juveniles was detected during the 2022 nesting season in the Malá Fatra mountains. This finding is urging for more detailed research in other mountain areas taking into consideration the expansion of its population in Europe.
