Narratives are pre-existent socially accepted forms of interpretation, which delineate and confine the interpretation strategies in individual texts. Even though narratives shape the ‘sayable’ in a Foucaultian sense, they have so far been widely neglected by linguistic discourse analysis. In this paper we discuss data-driven methods in the analysis of narratives. Using 3376 stories of the first sexual encounter as an example, we propose using hierarchical ngram-collocation-graphs as a means of visualizing the complex cooccurrence-structure that forms narratives on the textual surface.
