ABSTRACT Despite being one of the key areas for practice in occupational therapy, very little is known about occupational therapy practice in mental health settings in India. This study aimed to explore the experiences of Indian occupational therapists working in mental health settings, through a phenomenological approach. The primary investigator conducted in-depth, semi-structured telephonic interviews with 12 occupational therapists working in varied mental health settings across the country as part of the study. Findings highlighted the perceptions of occupational therapists working in mental health settings along with the commonly used assessments and interventions, and experiences of working with other health professionals. Challenges faced by the therapists due to staff shortage, lack of higher professional qualifications, and limited research evidence to guide practice were also revealed. The study findings underscore the need to address these issues to enhance occupational therapy practice in Indian mental health settings. Trial registration: Clinical Trials Registry India identifier: CTRI/2020/07/026774.

ABSTRACT Objective: To map the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the occupational performance profile of older people participating in the ‘Deu Branco’ workshop. Methods: The study was developed in three phases with the application of the Disability Assessment Scale for Dementia – long version (DADL-BR) in older people attending the ‘Deu Branco’ workshop at Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp), Brazil. Results: In the pre-pandemic period of COVID-19, participants had difficulties in only 2 of the 20 domains evaluated (Rest and Sleep and Finance and Correspondence), while during the pandemic period they had difficulties in 5 of the 20 domains (Functional Mobility, Rest and Sleep, Finance and Correspondence, Care of Others and Work). Conclusion: It was possible to observe the interference of the COVID-19 pandemic in the daily biopsychosocial sphere of older people, who had to adapt their activities or were unable to perform some of their occupations.

An anthropophagic proposition in occupational therapy knowledge: Driving our actions towards social life 职业治疗知识中的食人命题:驱使我们的行为走向社会生活

ABSTRACT This year Brazil celebrates 100 years of a landmark in Modernism. The Manifesto Anthropophagic, by Andrade, is part of this and proposes that a real process of knowledge production stems from alterity, the coexistence of cultures, understanding the other and, from the ‘devouring’ of knowledge, building the new. Inspired by this, I propose the discussion of an anthropophagic knowledge construction in occupational therapy, starting from questioning the locus and the purpose of professional actions. Loci of practice are discussed in terms of four concepts: occupation, human activity, cotidiano (everyday life), and ways of life. Purpose is discussed through the concepts of occupational engagement, social insertion/inclusion, emancipation/autonomy, and social participation. Coming from social occupational therapy, I advocate the relevance of directing our actions towards social life. To this end, it is necessary to recognise the plurality of vocabularies, histories, and cultures within the profession, which can be achieved through a construction that can unite us.

ABSTRACT This study focused on the intervention of occupational therapy in improving hand grasp strength in individuals infected with COVID-19, who were hospitalised. This study aims to identify which of three types of intervention (conventional, using Biometrics E-link® G200 with game interface or no direct occupational therapy intervention) improves hand grasp strength in individuals who had COVID-19. The sample has 120 participants divided randomly into one control group and two experimental groups. To assess the necessary parameters, a dynamometer, the Frontal Assessment Battery and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand will be used. The control group will do the assessment along the same lines as the others but will receive the treatment at the end of the clinical trial. It is known that hand grasp strength is frequently used in activities of daily living so, the results may facilitate the selection of more effective intervention programmes to obtain health gains in the population that had COVID-19.

ABSTRACT Provision of access to health care for all people, regardless of their socioeconomic status or where they live, is one of the United Nations’ goals of making health care a universal human right. During the era of coronavirus where movement is restricted including where health facilities are located, e-therapy can be implemented in occupational therapy services to reduce socioeconomic barriers related to health costs and access. This cross-sectional quantitative study design explores the impact of specific e-therapy application in advancing occupational therapy intervention as a rehabilitative profession in supporting clients in low-resourced countries. The study findings show maximum acceptance and high satisfaction level of the clients following e-therapy services; occupational therapists also were satisfied with the implementation of e-therapy services; however, a few therapists were not ready to deliver e-therapy interventions due to different challenges.

ABSTRACT As we rebuild our communities during the ongoing pandemic, support is needed for those with ongoing symptoms after COVID-19, also known as ‘long COVID.’ Fatigue and cognitive problems pose a particular challenge in the workplace. The emergent nature of long COVID has resulted in disjointed attempts to address return-to-work. This paper presents a critical appraisal of the current evidence, which reveals a scarcity of return-to-work interventions for people with long COVID. Insights from research in other chronic conditions guided the development of a possible intervention for people with long COVID. This paper will describe the components of a virtual self-management group program addressing return-to-work in people with long COVID. The program will feature short educational modules paired with an OT-led, live weekly support group. The Work Limitations Questionnaire will be utilised to assess change in perceived workplace participation and challenges, at the onset and close of the six-week program.

ABSTRACT This essay presents a theoretical-practical reflection about the contributions of occupational therapy in mental health in Brazil to face pandemics and their individual and collective effects. The objective is to identify and analyze the different dimensions of the professional action of occupational therapists who work in the mental health field in the COVID-19 context in Brazil. To do so, the interfaces between mental health and pandemics, the organisation of the Brazilian network of psychosocial care and the action possibilities in the Health Public System are briefly presented. Also, four dimensions of the professional practice of occupational therapy are presented: (1) Arts and health care, (2) Management actions, (3) Professional qualification actions, and (4) Social participation and communication. These dimensions must be considered given the pandemic context and the interrelation between them. It is hoped that the reflections on the dimensions presented will contribute to the construction of occupational therapeutic practices in psychosocial contexts, expanding the possibilities of a clinical practice inseparable from the actions of creation, citizenship and professional training.

ABSTRACT The COVID-19 pandemic is a social, complex, chaotic, and non-linear event, leaving lessons that transcend the figures, statistics, Intensive Care Units, epidemiology, and the politics of fear and death. This text reflects on the sociopolitical contexts and the States and Governments’ responses from the perspective of biopolitics, southern epistemologies, and citizenship, and their expression in different population groups. The elements derived from this reflection can nurture occupational therapies’ practices to respond and propose hopeful pathways.
