Developing Knowledge Together: Participatory Methods in Psychological and Neuroscientific Research with Children and Adolescents Abstract: Participatory action research understands the implementation of research as a cooperation or coproduction of researchers with nonscientific individuals. However, the general knowledge about the participatory approach as well as participatory methods and their implementation is still limited. Especially the active involvement and empowerment of children and adolescents require special measures and a creative and flexible application of various methods. In addition, the use of participatory methods in neurodevelopmental research first demands prior explanation of complex techniques to successfully implement the cooperation and coproduction between researchers and children and adolescents. In this contribution, we emphasize the relevance of the participatory approach for scientific work, present different methods that allow an introduction of complex techniques in neurodevelopmental research, and illustrate how to systematically apply this approach to research in children and adolescents.

"Where am I, and where do I want to go?" A Group Therapy Program for Disorientated, Psychosomatically Ill Young People Abstract: Objective: What influence does the concretization of the postinpatient life and career perspective have on the outcome of the inpatient treatment of psychosomatically ill young people? Method: A randomized case-control study. Results: The participants receive the perspective or orientation group well and see it as an important part of the treatment. Participating patients experience significantly less stress when discharge of (residual) symptoms than patients in the control group. Conclusions: The group program succeeds in drawing the focus of many affected persons away from patient identity toward a healthy future orientation and thus improving the course of therapy. Accordingly, the program should be integrated into standard inpatient therapy. In addition, the question arises as to the possible role of the program in primary prevention.

Employing Emotional Virtual Characters for Teaching in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Abstract: Communication and interaction are central to teaching child and adolescent psychiatry, with practical exercises often needing more access to actual patients or actors. Virtual reality (VR) offers an innovative solution by enabling simulation-based learning. With the help of computer-generated, interactive characters, students can practice repeatedly and in a standardized way how to conduct a medical interview and acquire communication skills. Initial tests with students show a high level of acceptance and believability despite the need for optimization of the voice input and the student's desire to use such new technology in teaching in the future. The next step will be to evaluate the benefits of the VR application regarding learning success and the influence of the teaching method on motivation and enjoyment of learning.
