Being able to have open and clear conversations about performance in the workplace brings many benefits for our teams and businesses. However, it can be an emotional topic, and giving and receiving feedback effectively is something that many of us struggle with. In this article we will explore why it matters and why using the correct terminology is important, and we will look at some tools that can be used to facilitate a more confident and consistent approach in practice.

Emergency management of the polytrauma patient
Q4 VETERINARY SCIENCES Pub Date : 2025-02-27 DOI: 10.1002/inpr.516
Lyn O'Byrne, Laura Cole

Background: Polytrauma is a commonly seen emergency in veterinary practice and is defined as two or more injuries involving multiple body parts or organ systems. One or more of these injuries may be life threatening and patients can rapidly deteriorate. The critical nature of polytrauma cases highlights the need for a coordinated team approach to their care to ensure the best possible outcome for the patient.

Aim of the article: This article discusses the pathophysiology of trauma, triage, emergency stabilisation and diagnostics of the trauma patient, highlighting challenges of managing polytrauma patients and the importance of teamwork and a collaborative approach in providing optimal care.

Background: Farmers are increasingly being asked to reduce the environmental effects of their products. Vets should be in a position to be central to these efforts and hence need to better understand the areas where they can help their clients.

Aim of the article: This article aims to give practitioners a background to the greenhouse gas emissions associated with dairy production, so that they can understand which areas to concentrate on to reduce them and to start to quantify these potential reductions.

Approach to backyard poultry. Part 2: improving chicken welfare and management between vet visits
Q4 VETERINARY SCIENCES Pub Date : 2025-02-27 DOI: 10.1002/inpr.518
Heather Elven

Background: Backyard poultry numbers in the UK are increasing rapidly and are now the third most popular pet in the UK. With significant concerns and subsequent biosecurity advice arising from avian influenza, and further species-specific legislation relating to poultry, it can feel overwhelming as a veterinary surgeon to provide up-to-date management and welfare advice to pet poultry owners.

Aim of the article: This two-part series provides veterinarians with a starting point to feel more confident with examining backyard poultry cases in practice. It primarily focuses on pet chickens and aims to encourage clinicians to get involved with further poultry learning and poultry clients. This second part focuses on what advice you can provide to support chicken welfare between consultations and how to improve health and welfare for these patients with preventive medicine and veterinary advice. Maintaining good welfare, biosecurity and preventive medicine will not only ensure healthy chickens but will build and support a strengthened veterinary-client relationship. The previous article, published in last month's In Practice, detailed some of the common problems and presenting signs of backyard poultry seen in veterinary practice.

Human factors and medical devices: safe operation and reducing errors
Q4 VETERINARY SCIENCES Pub Date : 2025-02-27 DOI: 10.1002/inpr.520
Scott Brown

The use of medical devices is prolific in veterinary practices and is essential to clinical practice, whether that be to administer anaesthetic gases, drug infusions or a host of other treatment or therapy interventions. Human factors play a significant role in the safe operation of medical devices, and errors in their use can result in injury to the animal or to veterinary staff. This article explores human factors relating specifically to medical devices drawing on established theories.

Appropriate management of poisoning cases in cats and dogs

Background: Cats and dogs presenting with potential poisoning is common in companion animal practice. However, treatment is not always necessary and so individual case assessment is essential to provide appropriate management, rather than having blanket protocols for all poisoning cases.

Aim of the article: This article gives guidance on performing a risk assessment of poisoning cases and discusses some of the common pitfalls in management and the common toxicants involved.
