Connecting with clients is a vital part of veterinary businesses. When it's done right, you'll reap the return on your investments, as will your patients. This article explains the importance of ensuring practice communications are consistent, personalised and relevant to help foster and maintain these client relationships, and outlines how smart technology can help you achieve this in practice.

Background: Nutrition is undoubtedly the single most important aspect of managing any sheep flock. Both performance and health are directly impacted by the nutritional status of the ewe; if nutrition is suboptimal this can lead to health being compromised and performance reduced. Many health challenges can be attributed to poor nutrition, with energy and protein deficits being the most common issues. Early recognition of suboptimal nutrition is an essential skill for maintaining the overall health and performance of the flock.

Aim of the article: This article aims to upskill practitioners so that they can recognise the importance of optimal nutrition and the consequences of poor feeding, and provide them with the tools to work with their clients to improve flock performance through good management.

As of February 2023, qualifying farmers in England have been able to apply for a government-funded annual vet visit – the Annual Health and Welfare Review – as part of the Animal Health and Welfare Pathway (AHWP) (non-Basic Payment Scheme farmers have been able to apply since late September 2023). A year on since the AHWP was first launched, this article outlines how the pathway is working, the sector-specific endemic disease schemes and how to conduct (and apply for) a vet visit. To illustrate how the scheme is working on a more practical level, the article focuses on the sheep sector specifically, and includes case studies about the AHWP from both the client and vet perspective, highlighting just how much can be covered in the annual review.

In this article, we cover how to support a colleague or employee with a chronic condition, neurodivergence and/or disability, and explain the legalities surrounding disability and employment, including demystifying ‘reasonable adjustments’.

This article outlines the impact of incivility on colleagues, clients and patients, and explains how people may respond to this type of behaviour. It also discusses how best to address incivility in practice and offers tips on creating a supportive environment.

Background: Septic arthritis, physitis and/or osteomyelitis (SAPO) is a common presentation in foals, particularly those aged under seven months old. Due to its often rapid progression and the fact that prognosis is improved if treatment begins within 24 hours of the onset of clinical signs, it is important that affected patients are identified as early as possible and treatment initiated promptly.

Aim of the article: This article guides practitioners on the clinical signs of SAPO cases and outlines the diagnostic and treatment options available.

Background: With over 1060 species reported and a considerable number of these kept in captivity, theraphosid spiders, also known as tarantulas, have become a significant part of private and zoological collections, hence necessitating a greater demand for veterinary expertise.

Aim of the article: This comprehensive review addresses the unique challenges in tarantula care. It delves into the application of diagnostic tools like histology, radiography, haematology and microbiology in tarantulas, and discusses how to gather clinically relevant data for effective treatment planning of common conditions. It also outlines adaptations to cater treatments to tarantulas' unique anatomy, and offers guidance on drug selection and veterinary procedures, as well as covering humane euthanasia methods.
