Tremaine Arkley
The Tremaine Arkley Croquet Collection, donated to UBC in 2011 by Tremaine and Gail Arkley, is a unique fine art collection spanning from the 1850s to present. The collection includes oil paintings, watercolours, etchings, illustrations and other pieces of original fine art as well as photographs, prints, books, advertisements, comics and other materials related to croquet. Tremaine Arkley is a former member of the US National Croquet team. The collection can be viewed in person at UBC Library’s Rare Books and Special Collections, or online at digitalcollections.library.ubc.ca.

Transformers have been used in the power industry for more than a century since the widespread use of ac generation, transmission, and distribution became the standard. Even now, they remain one of the most important substation assets that utilities around the world plan and operate. Figure 1 shows a 200-MVA transformer in service at a utility substation. In the past few decades, with a rapid push toward grid digitalization due to the proliferation of distributed energy resources (DER), the age-old transformer asset management strategy has also evolved for the better.

The urgency of climate change forces many countries and regions to accelerate toward the goal of a carbon-neutral economy. The consequence of replacing fossil-fuel synchronous generation with inverter-based renewables, such as wind and solar, leads to a paradigm shift from power systems dominated by synchronous machines to inverter-dominated power systems. When the share of inverter-based generation increases, the behavioral differences in terms of the grid services provided to the power network by generation become more salient. Services for grid stability that were historically inherently provided by synchronous generators now must be replaced by services from these inverter-based generation resources, other grid devices, or the combination of the two to ensure stable grid operation in the future as well.
