Deep water mollusks have been sparsely studied in Chile and, apart from some classic works (e. g. Smith 1885; Dall 1889, 1890, among others) and studies done mostly in central-southern Chile (Sellanes & Krylova 2005, Holmes et al. 2006, Fraussen & Sellanes 2008, among others), only a few recent works have reviewed species from the northern areas of the country (Bernard 1988, Guzmán et al. 1998, Véliz & Vásquez 2000, Pacheco & Laudien 2008, Araya 2013). Among the deep-water bivalves, genus Cuspidaria Nardo, 1840 encompasses several small species with nearly equivalve but markedly inequilateral smooth shells, with the posterior end rostrate to spoutlike and a hinge with one posterior lateral tooth (Keen 1971). This genus is represented in Chile by three species, all of them found in deep waters: Cuspidaria infelix Thiele, 1912 and Cuspidaria tenella Smith, 1907, both species found in Antarctic waters and in southern Patagonia (C. infelix) and Cuspidaria patagonica (Smith, 1885), which has been previously recorded in the Strait of Magellan (Smith 1885, Valdovinos 1999).

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide probes was used to investigate the abundance of prokariotic community from the sediments of different sites and along a temporary-space scale from Salar de Lagunilla, a high-altitude athalassohaline wetland in the Chilean Altiplano. Six different taxonomic groups were studied: alpha, beta, gamma proteobacterias, sulfate-reducing of the delta subclass of Proteobacteria, Cytophaga-fl avobacteria and the domain Archaea. The analyses showed the Archaea domain and Cytophaga-fl avobacteria group (33.6 % 20.2 %, respectively) as the dominant group, whereas the groups with minor abundance corresponded to alpha and Beta-proteobacteria (10.7 15.5 %). The prokariotic communities in the sediments also developed differently, as shown by Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and by nonmetric multidimensional scaling analysis. Changes in prokariotic community composition were followed d uring three years, w here there was a difference in the abundance of the domain Archaea, during the dry season (March-August 2006), which demonstrated the existence of temporary differences, but not space. In addition, Canonical correspondence analysis revealed that the prokaryotic community composition could be infl uenced by some environmental factors, where important components of the ecosystem such as, limestone and carbon, could play a role in the distribution and composition of the prokaryotic community.

In this study, we report parasitological findings in one Mola mola specimen examined and collected as by catch-off Tome, south central Chile, during october 2014. Adult stages of digeneans, Accacladium serpentulum and Accacladocoelium macrocotyle, cestode Anchistrocephalus microcephalus, and copepod Cecrops latreillii were isolated. Besides, at the larval stage, the third larval stage (L3) of nematode Anisakis sp. Type I, sensu Berland, 1961, and plerocerci larvae of cestode Molicola horridus were also observed. The results demonstrated the participation of M. mola as a definitive and intermediate or paratenic host in the life cycles of different parasites identified in the present study.

Acanthistius (Anthiinae) is distributed in the Indo West Pacifi c, Southeast Pacifi c and South Atlantic Ocean. The genus is constituted by 13 species, of which only Acanthistius pictus (Tschudi 1846) is recorded in Chile. A. pictus is an endemic serranid of the Eastern Pacifi c coast distributed from southern Perú (16°S) to north of Chile (26°S) (Pequeño et al. 2011). A. pictus is a rocky reef fi sh of shallow waters (5-30 m), that lives associated to caves and Lessonia trabeculata kelp forests (Cisternas & Sielfeld 2008). It is a carnivorous species that feeds mainly on crustaceans (Medina et al. 2004). It is also an economically important species which supports small-scale artisanal fi shing activities in the north of Chile (Godoy 2013).

Callyntra Solier, 1836, an endemic genus of Chile and Argentina, contains 21 valid species. Through field sampling and review of material from the coast of the Regions V and VI, we find specimens assigned to C. laticollis morphologically differentiated from the assigned species. Also, their morphology differ from all other nominal species of the genus. Therefore, in this article we describe C. inconsiderata sp. nov. and discuss regarding the relationship with other species of Callyntra, morphological variability, sexual dimorphism and conservation.

Alometric relationships among morphological characters provide evidence of the evolutionary forces that act on a particular trait. Spiders that live on the ground are less dimorphic than orb web spiders, which have been attributed to their different reproductive and foraging strategies. It has been proposed that long legs with respecto to the body size in males, yields an optimization of locomotion costs. The aim of this study was to characterize the variability of the length of legs in the Chilean recluse spider Loxosceles laeta and to compare the alometric relationships of the locomotor legs in males and females. Both sexes showed negative alometric relationships between the length of the legs and the lengtgh of the cephalotorax, ie spiders of large body size have proportionally shorter legs than that of small body size, which may be explained by bio mechanic causes. The males showed longer legs than females both in absolute and relative terms. That means that males have a higher locomotor efficiency than females. The relative small body size is related to a low transportation cost, which associated with long legs is the expected morphology for the more active and mobile males in this species.
