The anatomical features and morphology and lining of the borings of wood­boring bivalves are evaluated as taxobases. The aragonitic valves and pallets have poorer preservation potential than the calcitic boring linings that some forms secrete. These linings may be septate, containing retrusive caps.

Occurrences of Neogene rocky shores in Portugal have been identified by help of bioerosion trace fossils. Ichnogenera Gastrochaenolites, Entobia, Caulostrepsis, Maeandropolydora and Trypanites are generally present. The importance of bioeroded surfaces for field recognition of wave-cut platforms, hard substrate marine-flooding surfaces (transgressive surfaces), and of major interruptions (hia­tuses) in the stratigraphic record is stressed.

An examination of fossil and Recent right valves of the infaunal, suspension­feeding Corbula gibba (Olivi, 1792) revealed the presence of a slender, sub- conical, unbranched boring. The boring is interpreted as the work of a commensal organism, possible a parasite. Stratigraphic range is from Eocene to Recent.

Foraminiferivory revisited: a preliminary investigation of holes in foraminifera 重访有孔虫象牙:对有孔虫孔洞的初步调查

Planktonic and benthonic foraminiferal tests from modem tropical-subtropical marine environments were investigated with regard to bioerosional traces. The traces found on the foraminiferal tests were grouped into 7 different categories. It is suggested that the different traces may be related to different unknown preda­tors of which at least one is planktonic.

On coral reefs, products of bioerosion through the activity of micro- and macro-boring organisms and grazers are particulate and dissolved carbonate. The con-tribution to bioerosion of the major boring and grazing species was estimated on French Polynesia and the island La Réunion. The influence of bioerosion on the calcification/dissolution budget of reefal waters and on particulate calcium car-bonate fluxes was investigated. Studies on bioerosion were performed in order to assess: (a) eroding activity of grazers through the gut content analysis of echinoids and scarid parrot fish, (b) eroding activity of micro- and macroborers from ex-perimental substrates exposed for one year, and (c) role of sponges in total bioero-sion on reefal and experimental substrates. Calcification/dissolution budget was measured using the alkalinity anomaly technique, and particulate carbonate pro-duction was analysed from trapped sediments.

Development of microbial euendolithic communities: The influence of light and time 中新石器时代微生物群落的发展:光和时间的影响

The importance of euendolithic microbial communities as a palaeontological tool for the reconstruction of ancient sedimentary basin history has been widely ac- knowledged (Golubic et al. 1975, 1984, Vogel et al. 1995, 1996). This tool can be improved by better knowledge of the relationship between modern microendoliths (rock-penetrating microorganisms) and the environmental conditions they thrive in. The aim of a long-term study conducted on Lee Stocking Island, Bahamas, was to point out factors that control occurrence, distribution and composition of microbial euendolithic populations. The experimental design and first results are published in Radtke 1993, Kiene et al. 1995, Vogel et al. 1996, Gektidis 1997. This paper deals with one aspect of microendolithic development: the progress and change of community structure in time. Microendolithic biocoenoses are excellent bathymetric indicators (Golubic 1975, Gektidis 1997). However their potential use as indicators for different water depths is influenced by the con­tinuous growth of the endolithic communities themselves and the surrounding benthic microflora. This process will have to be taken into consideration when, following a uniformitarian approach, fossil basins are to be reconstructed by analyzing the fossil microendolithic ichno-communities.

Well-hidden beneath the umbo ofheterodont bivalves, a sack-like boring is etched into the two hinge plates of the opposed valves. The boring is abundant, occurs in numerous host species, ranges from Eocene to today and appears to have world­wide occurrence. The trace fossil is named Umbichnus inopinatus nov. igen. et isp. The nature of the tracemaker remains unknown. The possibility that the struc­ture is a dissolution pit produced by the bivalve itself is discussed.

Ichnotaxonomic and paleoecological studies on Jurassic samples resulted in the identification of four micro boring assemblages, called index ichnocoenoses. They are related to specific photic zones or subzones, and therefore are extraordinarily useful for bathymetric reconstructions.
