There seems to be some doubt as to which of the spellings “Paleocene” or “Palaeocene” should be used in manuscripts submitted for publication in Europe, while in North America the spelling “Paleocene” is standard. The latter is not surprising, as in North America the prefix paleo- is also used in terms such as Paleozoic, paleomagnetism, etc. In Europe, however, the prefix derived from the Greek palaios (= ancient, old) is generally spelt “palaeo-”, as for example in palaeontology...................

Crustal structure derived primarily from geophysical investigations reveals features that may be related to the complex tectonic evolution of the Tornquist Fan region. This northwestwards widening splay of Late Carboniferous – Early Permian fault zones in the Danish region emanates from the Teisseyre-Tornquist Zone in northern Poland. Seismic reflections and velocity anomalies image collisional fault zones that formed during the Proterozoic and Palaeozoic amalgamation of the crust. Re-equilibration of Moho appears to have taken place before late Palaeozoic rifting and magmatism initiated the main phase of basin formation that continued into the Mesozoic. The resulting, strong Moho topography, with variation between depths of 26 and 48 km, has been practically “frozen in” since then, although the late Cretaceous – early Cenozoic inversion tectonics may have formed a crustal keel underneath part of the Sorgenfrei-Tornquist Zone which cuts across the Proterozoic crust of the Tornquist Fan region.

The anatomical features and morphology and lining of the borings of woodboring bivalves are evaluated as taxobases. The aragonitic valves and pallets have poorer preservation potential than the calcitic boring linings that some forms secrete. These linings may be septate, containing retrusive caps.

Occurrences of Neogene rocky shores in Portugal have been identified by help of bioerosion trace fossils. Ichnogenera Gastrochaenolites, Entobia, Caulostrepsis, Maeandropolydora and Trypanites are generally present. The importance of bioeroded surfaces for field recognition of wave-cut platforms, hard substrate marine-flooding surfaces (transgressive surfaces), and of major interruptions (hiatuses) in the stratigraphic record is stressed.

An examination of fossil and Recent right valves of the infaunal, suspensionfeeding Corbula gibba (Olivi, 1792) revealed the presence of a slender, sub- conical, unbranched boring. The boring is interpreted as the work of a commensal organism, possible a parasite. Stratigraphic range is from Eocene to Recent.

Planktonic and benthonic foraminiferal tests from modem tropical-subtropical marine environments were investigated with regard to bioerosional traces. The traces found on the foraminiferal tests were grouped into 7 different categories. It is suggested that the different traces may be related to different unknown predators of which at least one is planktonic.

On coral reefs, products of bioerosion through the activity of micro- and macro-boring organisms and grazers are particulate and dissolved carbonate. The con-tribution to bioerosion of the major boring and grazing species was estimated on French Polynesia and the island La Réunion. The influence of bioerosion on the calcification/dissolution budget of reefal waters and on particulate calcium car-bonate fluxes was investigated. Studies on bioerosion were performed in order to assess: (a) eroding activity of grazers through the gut content analysis of echinoids and scarid parrot fish, (b) eroding activity of micro- and macroborers from ex-perimental substrates exposed for one year, and (c) role of sponges in total bioero-sion on reefal and experimental substrates. Calcification/dissolution budget was measured using the alkalinity anomaly technique, and particulate carbonate pro-duction was analysed from trapped sediments.
