ABSTRACT This paper examines Hannah Arendt’s account of the relationship between politics and morality. Many critics have argued that Arendt’s conception of political action lacks any moral foundations, while others have tried to focus on her understanding of thinking as a normative source of her ethics. In contrast to these views, I present an alternative explanation and argue that the sources of Arendt’s political ethics are located neither in the faculty of thinking nor in extrapolitical moral norms or rules, but in the ontological conditions of action, specifically worldliness, natality and plurality. This interpretation allows us to make sense of Arendt’s fragmented, unsystematic accounts of the various virtues and moral dispositions required for authentic politics: courage, responsibility, care, respect, moderation, solidarity and gratitude. In particular, an inquiry into the ontological sources of political ethics provides a solid normative grounding for the two moral dispositions—promise and forgiveness—that form an explicit “moral code” of political action for Arendt.

ABSTRACT Intellectuals have been engaged in public life since antiquity: from Biblical prophets down to figures such as Machiavelli, Locke, Voltaire, Montesquieu, Rousseau, and other Enlightenment and later thinkers. This article focuses on the life and work of Johannes Reuchlin (1455–1522). Its primary source is Reuchlin’s Expert Opinion Whether to Confiscate, Destroy and Burn All Jewish Books (Ratschlag Ob Man Den Juden Alle Ire Bücher Nemmen, Abthun Und Verbrennen Soll) published in 1510. Based on this and the scholarly literature, it is argued that as an outstanding philosemitic humanist who saved the Talmud and other Jewish books from destruction, Reuchlin should be recognized as a public intellectual, the greatest of his time. Arguably, by standing up against the destruction of Jewish religious and cultural life, Reuchlin stirred the German consciousness and public opinion that was crucial for the making of the Reformation. So far as the Jews were concerned, Jewish textual survival enabled national survival. Reuchlin contributed immensely to that survival.

ABSTRACT Metal music is here to stay, by all outward appearances, mainly, as I shall argue, by virtue of its expressive properties. Old calumnies excoriating metal for promoting immorality and the dark arts have collapsed under their own weight. Yet this article makes the harder case for representation as a value added to metal aesthetics. Metal goes so far as to assess ancient and modern foreign policy and to represent classical art forms. Philosophical aesthetics offers new insights into metal music, as shown via the article’s discussion of debates involving Roger Scruton, Stephen Davies, and Peter Kivy, among others.

This book by Mabogo Percy More, the author of a number of books on African philosophy and anti-black racism, analyzes the views of Black Consciousness activist Steve Biko on race and racism in South Africa under Apartheid (1948–1994). More’s thought-provoking account of leading Western philosophers’ influence on Biko’s ideas and activities also scrutinizes Biko’s reactions to the philosophical trends that influenced the black liberation struggle and especially his rejection of the positions of liberals and Marxists on the question of racism.
