Invasive macrophytes threaten freshwater ecosystem biodiversity. We analyzed the impact of the invasive white ginger lily ( Hedychium coronarium Konig J, 1783.– Zingiberaceae) on aquatic insect assemblages living in the littoral zone of a tropical reservoir. We took aquatic insect samples in the littoral zone on four main vegetal profile banks: white ginger monotypic bank, forest partially invaded, native macrophyte monotypic bank and riparian forest. At each vegetal bank, we measured abiotic variables such as dissolved oxygen, pH, water temperature and depth. We analyzed the aquatic insects through abundance, richness and Simpson diversity. We used the non-Metric Multidimensional Scaling (nMDS) analysis to analyze the spatial distribution of each assemblage, and Analysis of similarities (ANOSIM) to verify differences amongst dissimilarity distances. Additionally, we analyzed the main taxa associated with invasive macrophytes through indicator species analyses using IndVal index. We observed that the invasive macrophyte banks presented higher abundance of associated specimens, as well as lower dissimilarity of aquatic insect assemblages. Additionally, invasive macrophytes shifted the water pH and littoral depth of reservoir banks. The IndVal index indicated eight aquatic insects as indicator species. Labrundinia unicolor Silva, 2013 , Ablabesmyia depaulai Neubern, 2013 and Diastatops Rambur, 1842 were indicator species on banks. We concluded that invasion of white ginger lily caused loss of shallow littoral habitat and altered the pH of the surrounding water probably by high decomposition rate and high production of plant biomass. We suggest the use of species of aquatic insects as indicator species to monitor white ginger lily impact in freshwater systems.

Diphya macrophthalma Nicolet, 1849 a type species of the genus and known by only holotype female from Central Chile is redescribed in details based on recently collected material. The male is described for the first time. Diphya rugosa Tullgren, 1902 previously considered as junior synonym of D. macrophthalma is revalidated. The known distribution of Diphya species from southern South America is mapped. Comments about status of northernmost populations of D. spinifera Tullgren, 1902 are given.

This study aimed to examine the relations between skull size and the level of cranial vault sutures closure. A total of 50 Myrmecophaga tridactyla and 178 of Tamandua tetradactyla skulls were analyzed in relation to 18 skull dimensions. The skulls were grouped into three level of suture closure: none suture closured (level 0), many sutures closured (level 1) and all the sutures closured (level 2). The results indicated that among the 18 variables measured, 17 showed significant differences (p ≤ 0.01) between immature and sub-adults skulls of T. tetradactyla ; as well as between immature and sub-adult, besides immature and adult skulls of M. tridactyla . Myrmecophaga tridactyla sub-adults and adults had no significant difference among any of the 18 dimensions. The foramen magnum height in both species showed no significant difference (p > 0.05) among any of sutures categories. In principle, suture closure level and cranial dimensions are important to estimate age group for both species of anteaters, and both T. tetradactyla and M. tridactyla immature individuals have the foramen magnum height similar to adult animals.

A large collection of terrestrial isopods from different Brazilian regions were examined. Two new species in the genus Amazoniscus (Scleropactidae) are described: A. paulae from the state of Para and A. schmidti from Minas Gerais. Pseudotyphloscia alba (Philosciidae) is firstly recorded from Brazil. The systematic position of Prosekia lejeunei and Venezillo tuberosus are discussed, and the latter transferred to the genus Ctenorillo . Diploexochus echinatus from the state of Para, is redescribed.
