Abstract: Energy ties constitute the foundation of the relations between China and West-Asian countries. Therefore changes occurring in the international energy markets present a new perspective for studying these relations. This paper formulates two new concepts, namely the regionalization of the international oil market and the de-regionalization of the international gas market, and analyzes their impact on the relations between China and the major oil and gas exporting countries in West Asia. The conclusion underlines that these two structural changes in the international energy markets mean that at the core interest level, West-Asian oil and gas exporting countries are moving away from the West and moving closer to China. Therefore, they can inject positive energy for the development of relations between China and West-Asian oil and gas exporting countries by promoting their mutual trade and economic cooperation and by making China play a greater role in ensuring peace and stability in the Middle East.

Abstract: Cultural ties are the foundation and the key fact of Sino-Turkish relationship. The Sino-Turkish cultural ties revolve the succession and development of the sprit of the Silk Road constituted by reciprocal economic concepts, inclusive humanistic concepts and cooperative security concepts. It can also provide an example tomulti-ethnic and multi-religious integration issues in global governance. The Sino-Turkish culture ties shoulder the missions of enhancing value communication, mutual trust and consensus against terrorism, which adds new connotation and new methods for China and Turkey, two powers at the ends of the Silk Road, to further deepen the bilateral relationship. China’s Silk Road strategy has created new opportunities to the cultural ties between China and Turkey, which is conducive to promote the relationship between China and the Arab-Islamic world and expand China’s influence in the Europe so as to promote the relationship between China and the West. A new mode of the Sino-Turkish Silk Road strategic cooperation can be established based on the Silk Road which connects Europe and Asia.

Abstract: Four years have past since the beginning of the Middle East upheavals; regional patterns of the Middle East have entered a deep-water zone: politically transitioning countries have faced three dilemmas and become disoriented; the old patterns shaped by the beginning of the upheavals are restructuring again, “old” orders recur increasingly in the “new” Middle East; power structures within the region are increasingly fragmented, which draws the whole region into turbulence; the upheavals also promote the strategic contraction of the US in the Middle East.

Abstract: Joint construction of “the Silk Road Economic Belt” and “the Maritime Silk Road of the 21st Century” is not only the objective requirement of China’s further economic development and its deepening reform and opening policy, especially its national strategy of “opening to the west”, but also a major historical opportunity for the development of the Asia-Europe countries particularly the Middle East countries. While Chinese economy achieved remarkable development, the economy of the Middle Eastern countries ploughed through the turmoil and fighting. From the point of view of the global economy, the economies of China and of the Middle East countries are at different stages of historical development. This kind of difference just reflected the complementarity in their economic cooperation. The two sides ought to grasp this historical opportunity, use complementary advantages and achieve win-win cooperation. With the status of the Middle East in China’s diplomacy being definitely rising, China’s Middle East strategy should grasp four points of emphasis, such as expansion of the international political space, strengthening of national security, promotion of trade and economic cooperation, and enhancing soft power.

Abstract: The “China-Arab States Cooperation Forum” is an important cooperation mechanism between the Arab world and China. Though the forum has made remarkable achievements since its establishment, enormous challenges are still ahead. The largestchallenge is that both sides have common aspirations for further achievements and integration, and for a closer relationship between China and the Arab World. The real strategic vision is not limited to trade and investment, but also includes security, national defense building, technology transfer and some other fields. To overcome these challenges, three problems must be taken care of. First, the two sides need to deepen their mutual understandings; second, both Chinese and Arabs must get rid of the deep cautiousness towards each other; and third, both parties need to develop a comprehensive outlook from an aspect of civilization.

Abstract: Although Muammar al-Qaddafi was known to fanatically adhere to a broad set of zealous principles, when threats and challenges to his political survival mounted, sporadic breaches in the country’s rigid wall of ideology in regard to Libya’s international relations appeared, evincing Qaddafi’s ability to demonstrate pragmatism when required in order to maintain his grip on power. This article will explore Libya’s strategic-military alignment with the USSR and offer a retrospective analysis of one of the lesser-discussed chapters in Tripoli’s tempestuous and belligerent foreign policy during the height of the Cold war era, spanning the period of 1974-1989.

Abstract: The unrest in West Asia and North Africa has lasted for four years, and the situation has become increasingly complicated. The dire situation in Egypt, the changes between moderate and radical Islam, the strategic policy of the United States in the Middle East, and the Iranian nuclear program are all crucial factors, affecting the situation in West Asia and North Africa. For that reason, the situation in West Asia and North Africa will be turbulent in the foreseeable future.

Abstract: Islamism forces have risen rapidly after the unrest in the Middle East, and the Islamic parties based on them have initiated political participation one after another. Some moderate Islamic parties, such as the ones in Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco, have become the ruling parties in these countries through parliamentary elections. The Justice and Development Party (AKP), an old Islamic party in Turkey has played an important role in the unrest in the Middle East. Islamic parties have had significant changes in fields of ideology and political practices. Despite their various performances in facing complex situations both internally and externally, Islamic parties all face tough challenges. The Freedom and Justice Party in Egypt’s failure just after its one-year ruling marks the biggest setback of Islamic parties.

Abstract: Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936) was at his core an Arabist, rather than a scholar of Southeast Asia or even Islam in the Dutch East Indies. An Arab lens is evident in his early work on the Hijaz and in his later scholarship for the Dutch colonial government. Snouck Hurgronje’s work The Acehnese, in particular, evidenced a thoroughly comparative approach, verging at times on a focus outside of Southeast Asia, and throughout a preference for Arab orthodoxy. He found Indonesians to be inferior Muslims, and he saw their indigenous cultural practices as non-Islamic. It is important to remember Snouck Hurgronje’s Arab lens when considering his work and his legacy.

Abstract: The Gulf cooperation has gained new momentum after the end of the Cold War. However, it also faces various developing difficulties, including the low level of regional institutional cooperation and integration. The regional context of the regional cooperation in the Gulf region is composed by regional security, energy factors and monarchy form of government, in which regional security is the primary motivation which makes it possible for the co-existence in competition of two tendencies in this region: integration and division. The energy element is the most important reason for external powers’ involvement in the region as well as an important part in regional cooperation in the Gulf region. The monarchy is the key point to understand the relationship between the GCC and Iran and the geographical spillover of the GCC. These factors jointly shape the regional cooperation in the Gulf region.
