Two types of single fed low-profile SIW-like cavitybacked planar slot antennas for circularly polarization (CP) application are designed, fabricated and measured. Firstly, a spoon shaped slot structure cavity-backed by a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity is proposed to realize the CP performance. Next, a half mode SIW (HMSIW) cavity-backed semi-circle slot antenna is proposed to further reduce the size of the antenna element. Finally, the measured and simulated results validate the proposed antennas.

The ever growing demand for higher data rates in satellite based services along with the congestion of the lower part of the frequency spectrum has led to the migration of new services to higher bands, such as the Ka-, Q/V bands. However, propagation in these bands is more prone to the atmospheric impairments; thus, the effects of the various atmospheric phenomena need to be accurately modeled and quantified in order to allow for efficient and reliable system design. To this end, a new propagation campaign consortium has been established across Europe (UK, Spain, Portugal, Belgium and Greece) to conduct measurements in the Ka- and Q- bands using Alphasat's beacons. This shall allow the validation and enhancement of existing propagation models and support the development of Fading Mitigation Techniques. The objective of this paper is to present the new propagation campaign giving details for the various experimental sites.

The reference phase, first proposed for the design of Fresnel Zoned Plates Antennas with reduced side-lobe levels, is applied here in the design of zoned fishnet metamaterial lenses. Four different metalens designs at f = 56.7 GHz are presented with values of reference phase of 0, 0.7π, 1.4π and 2π. Numerical results demonstrate that the best focusing performance is obtained for the metalens design of 0.7π in terms of the focal length, power at the focal length, side lobe level and first null. This performance is experimentally validated by comparing the focusing properties of metalenses with (0.7π) and without reference phase (0). Experimental results demonstrate a good agreement with numerical ones with a reduction of side lobes of 2.5dB and first null of ~12dB for the design with reference phase.

A simplified circuit-model approach is presented in this work to analyze the behavior of a novel broadband varactor loaded phasing line, specifically designed to improve the frequency performances of aperture-coupled reflectarray cell, and able to offer a useful degree of frequency agility. The proposed approach provides a simple but effective demonstration of the enhanced frequency performances of the adopted radial line geometry with respect to standard linear phasing line configurations.

This paper presents the results of flight tests conducted in August 2015. During these flight tests, an OFDM-like sequence in the 902-928 MHz ISM band is used to characterize air-to-ground propagation of the 960-1215 MHz ARNS band. The paper gives a brief overview of the measurement setup and procedures, followed by the channel characterization results and an assessment of its applicability to aviation ranging application.

In this paper, a broad bandwidth, high gain rectangular patch antenna using planar-patterned metamaterial concept and its power reception performance are discussed. Top patch consists of separated micro triangular periodic gaps while the ground plane is etched with crossed strip-line gaps. The patterned metal patch and ground plane form a coupled capacitive-inductive circuit of negative index metamaterial. In addition, experimental and theoretical power reception performance of the metamaterial antenna for different selected intervals are compared by using Software Defined Radio.

This paper presents a design of wideband folded reflectarray using single-layered sub-wavelength elements. Different to existing folded reflectarray designs where a half or near half wavelength unit cell is adopted for lower reflectors, this work uses rectangular patch elements arranged in a sub-wavelength grid on a single layer of substrate, in an effort to achieve wide bandwidth of folded reflectarrays. The proposed folded reflectarray exhibits a broadband performance with a low-profile structure. The measured results show that the folded reflectarray with 0.3λ grid spacing can achieve a 1-dB gain bandwidth of 16% with an aperture efficiency of 44%.

Using the moment method, we propose a square loop (reference) antenna whose corners are truncated for circularly polarized (CP) radiation. The loop element is used to construct a triple-loop antenna with a single feed. It is found that the antenna shows three minima in the frequency response of the axial ratio. On the basis of the radiation characteristics, we design a plate-loop antenna using the FD-TD method. It is revealed that the antenna has a wider CP-wave bandwidth than that of the reference antenna by a factor of two.

The analysis of experimental drop size distributions (DSDs) is useful to characterise rainfall phenomena in order to provide improved attenuation predictions, particularly at millimetre-wave frequencies. A study on disdrometer data collected during five years is being performed with this aim. In this paper, results such as year to year variability of the DSDs for different rainfall rate ranges, or the variation of specific attenuation with drop sizes, are presented.
