Maintenance is one of the most important territories of engineering. From a mathematical point of view, maintenance is a discrete state space stochastic process without after-effects, so it can be modelled as a Markov-chain. After the determination of probability densities of changes of operational states and setting up the transition probability matrix, a matrix-algebraic method can be used for investigating these processes with systems approach analysis. This paper is aimed to discuss the possibilities of the use of simulation-based weighted sensitivity analysis of maintenance systems and processes. The proposed method helps decision making in maintenance management in cases of different engineering areas.

With new methods of 3D model creation, the examination of real objects and natural or artificial formations in virtual space become possible. A precondition is that the models be created along the principles of photogrammetry. The bases of the method introduced in the paper are the precise flight ability of small-sized machines piloted by a robot and a mounted camera with distortion-free optics. Surveys conducted by such devices can be faster and more economical than the usage of conventional aircraft requiring human personnel. As long as all the parameters of the devices are known, it is possible to create a kind of 3D model on which volume calculation can be conducted referring to the real object. In this present paper, we introduce the algorithmic and automatized version of the previous analysis method demanding manual engineering work. The solution can be appropriate for the complete substitution of geodetic field work; it produces faster and more accurate results.

In the context of connecting the physical and the digital worlds, common grounds must be established in several areas. Industry 4.0, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) principles are focused on interoperability. Regarding the interfacing, the OPC UA (OPC Unified Architecture) protocol is considered to be the most important. Descending from the PC based supervisory levels to the automation level (automation panels, machine and sensorial levels), achieving OPC UA interfacing is harder. Legacy systems, specific protocols, the need of lower cost hardware/software middleware equipment for existing systems that supports the industrial environment, flexibility to augment the existing structure with additional software modules, to develop easy knowledge transfer for integrators with lower software skills, are representing current issues on the automation level. Considering that a large part of the existing automation structures is using Modbus protocol, especially serial Modbus, the paper proposes a Modbus-OPC UA wrapper, considering a middleware IoT 2040 hardware equipment and Node-RED software environment, in order to provide interoperability. The work focuses on the serial Modbus client interface, but it can be extended within the same proposed structure to other protocols. The concept is tested first in the laboratory and then in a real scenario consisting of an existing wastewater pumping station (WWPS).

This paper presents a fuzzified Gabor filter in applications of a text recognition in images. The filter orientation and wavelengths are fuzzified to optimize the filter's response. It was shown that Bell's function and triangular membership function are the most appropriate for fuzzification. The algorithm was tested on various images that contain text, and has provided satisfactory results. The components of interest were efficiently extracted. The use of fuzzified Gabor filter produced satisfactory results with efficient text detection and extraction, and good noise robustness.

The paper deals with a new simple and effective proportional-integral controllers tuning method for an integrating plus dead-time transfer function model. The method is based on a pole placement technique. The selection of dominant poles is given in the function of the dead-time model. Proportional and integral controller gain is received in a simple way by applying the given equation. The comparison with other methods for the set-point and disturbance response, as well as the robustness onto the effect of the unknown changes, shows the efficiency of the proposed method.

The main objective of the paper is the analysis of the selected higher education indicators and the effect of their interaction, through formulating the financial models for prediction of the behavior of the selected performance indicator, depending on the selected financial indicators. Out of 120 higher education indicators from UNESCO Institute for Statistics database, total of 10 were analysed in the time period of 10 years. Statistical analysis is based on panel regression model. The results show that panel-based financial models that are comprehensive, provide insight into the influence of multiple factors at the same time and look at aspects of their impact at the national levels.

In this work application of fuzzy deep learning algorithm to classify vibration signals of a Deutz MWM 8 cylinder large gas engine is presented. The main contribution is to identify the misfire characteristics in realtime embedded microcontroller environment. The substance of the scheduled fuzzy system is a stratified deep neural network that obtains information from both fuzzy and neural representations. The misfire characteristics learnt from these two various views are convolved, forming the ultimate signal to be classified.

In algorithms for image segmentation, distance functions represent a criterion based on which the pixels can be divided into groups of segments. Determination of the segmentation criterion includes several factors. The application of the aggregation operator enables the adjustment of the segmentation criteria according to the intuitively defined criterion. Depending on the characteristics of the applied aggregation operator and the distance functions as basic factors relevant for segmentation, the new distance functions with specified features are obtained. In this article one method for constructing distance functions using ordered weighted averaging aggregation operator is proposed. The application of the constructed functions is illustrated by the segmentation of the image through the “Fuzzy c-means clustering” algorithm for segmentation.

This paper introduces recent research results in model representation of knowledge, former decision and experience content which is applied at driving of entities in system level model of engineering structures. Work for these results is part of a long-term research program to fulfill new demands against driving content by developing strategies of engineering model. The most important role of driving model entities by content is to replace the troublesome direct human definition. This paper first tracks milestones in history of developing strategies for engineering model to conclude their main impacts on current virtual engineering technology. Following this, new contributions are discussed including integration of organized information content in engineering model, modified concept of model for information content, and substructures on levels of information content model. Finally, implementation of information content model in leading industrial engineering model structures is outlined.
