Phase waveplates for THz beam shaping were developed, calculated, and implemented. Developed phase plates could be 3D-printed from commercially available polymers, which makes them affordable and fully customized. These waveplates allow to widely and easily manipulate THz beam shape.

Resonant tunneling diode (RTD) terahertz oscillator without a metal–insulator–metal (MIM) capacitor offers easy deployment. Here, we propose RTD oscillators using different perimeters of square split ring resonators (SRRs) without MIM capacitors. The RTD is integrated into the center split gap of the SRR. Coplanar stripline antennas are integrated with the SRR to increase the output power. The highest measured oscillation frequency is 1.22 THz with an output power of ~7 µW.

This contribution presents an overview of main methods what are currently used for the sensitivity, i.e., responsivity and noise equivalent power determination of state-of-the-art antenna-coupled field-effect-transistor-based THz detectors/sensors. We show that, the reported results strongly depend on the sensor effective area determination method, especially if it is not unambiguously determined leading to up to orders of magnitude discrepancy. Furthermore we illustrate our statements by presenting results of characterisation of detectors which are coupled with different antennas and presenting state-of-the-art sensitivity values.

A W-band traveling-wave tube (TWT) by utilizing the folded waveguide slow wave structure (FWSWS) combined with the pencil beam is designed to develop the high power millimeter-wave radiation source. The particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation results show that this TWT can produce over 158W output power in the range from 90GHz to 97GHz. The maximum output power of the TWT can reach 293W at the typical frequency of 94GHz, which corresponds to a gain of 37.68dB and an interaction efficiency of 8.15%.

In sub-THz and THz gyrotrons with oversized cavities, there is the problem of implementation of stable single-mode generation in modes, operating at high cyclotron harmonics. It is shown that a high fraction of ohmic losses in sub-THz and THz gyrotrons affects not only the efficiency and output power, but also affects the stability of the operating regime. A cooling the gyrotron cavity to cryogenic (nitrogen) temperatures as one of the promising methods for reducing ohmic losses in terahertz gyrotrons is considered.

We report the first THz emission at 280 GHz excited by a Continuous-Wave Dual-Frequency Vertical-External-Cavity Semiconductor Laser emitting at 1064 nm and using a long carrier-lifetime plasmonic-based photomixer. These encouraging results pave the way toward coherent, tunable, compact, powerful, and low-cost terahertz sources working at room temperature.

Record high spatial coherence values up to 87λ (130λ) in experiment (theory) were reported for polarized emission of surface plasmon-phonon polaritons excited in shallow surface relief n-GaN grating. Unusual independence of quality factor and dependence of spatial coherence length on the grating wavevector were observed in the course of a thorough investigation of dispersion characteristics of these quasiparticles.

In this work, we use optical pump-terahertz (THz) probe spectroscopy to investigated the impurity-induced topological phase transition and the photo-induced carrier behavior in cadmium arsenide (Cd3As2), a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal. By comparing the dynamics of different temperature and pump fluence, we discuss the carrier dynamics and physical mechanism caused by impurity.

We experimentally observed photomixed THz emission from a dual-grating-gate high-electron-mobility transistor under different bias conditions at 120 K with irradiating photomixed dual-CW-IR laser beams. The observed emission spectral peak frequencies meet well to the theoretical calculations for plasmon mode frequencies, suggesting the photomixed THz emission is amplified by the DC-current-driven plasmonic boom type instability when the electron drift velocity exceeds the plasmon velocity at the plasmon cavity boundary.
