National data show that engineers are unlikely to seek help for a mental health concern, which can result in symptom escalation. Therefore, this article highlights research on mental health in engineering and provides research-based strategies for integrating mental health and wellness into the classroom. We aim to motivate chemical engineering faculty to create a classroom environment that prioritizes mental health, helping to shift from a culture of stress to a culture of wellbeing in engineering.

We developed a remote lab experience where freshmen grew and analyzed the activity of sourdough starters as a means of engaging with chemical engineering concepts. This six-week hands-on activity was targeted due to its low-cost, non-hazardous materials, and ability to be conducted safely in a non-laboratory setting. By designing the lab to be guided inquiry, we embraced the inherent variability students would encounter running these experiments remotely to create a motivating learning experience.

The article provides a resource to help faculty cultivate their education research ideas and place those ideas within a framework suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal such as Chemical Engineering Education. The six-element publication framework is supported by two metaphors, a funnel and a house, to illustrate how to construct an argument for an education publication and the utility of a conceptual framework. Concrete examples and a set of resources are provided.

Digital tools, from spreadsheets to process simulators, used by chemical engineers in industrial settings have become embedded into the chemical engineering curriculum in recent decades. One class of tools, learning management systems, is ubiquitous in academia with limited or no use once working as an engineer. However, many new communications and productivity tools became more prevalent during the COVID-19 pandemic when remote work was dictated. Industrial communication tools e.g., Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Google Chat are currently used in industry and integration in a classroom setting prepares students for collaborations and communications in the real world.
