Undergraduate Research in Chemical Engineering: Benefits and Best Practices 化学工程本科研究:效益与最佳实践

Undergraduate research is widely recognized as a high-impact practice in higher education, but pressures on new faculty may make them hesitant to engage in the potentially time-consuming mentorship of undergraduate researchers. The objective of our workshop was to inspire and equip faculty to engage undergraduates in their laboratories and research programs both to enrich the educational experience of the students and to enhance faculty research productivity. The workshop covered benefits to students as well as benefits and challenges to faculty. Tools to help plan an individual student projects were presented. We also covered information on alternatives to individual projects to increase student and faculty productivity. These included course-based undergraduate research experiences and undergraduate research seminar courses.

Case-based Learning in Material and Energy Balances to Help Students Practice the Transferability of Chemical Engineering Problem-Solving 基于案例的材料和能量平衡学习,帮助学生练习化学工程问题解决的可转移性

As more chemical engineering students enter careers beyond the field, students need more guidance in applying their problem solving skills to a challenges beyond the plant or refinery. Since Fall 2019, we have implemented case-based learning across our Material and Energy Balances course to help students practice chemical engineering thinking as a transferable and useful skill beyond typical process calculation examples. We share our approach and examples so other instructors may try teaching with cases.

We present an educational unit to teach computational modeling, a vital part of chemical engineering curricula, through the lens of synthetic biology. Lectures, code, and homework questions provide conceptual and practical introductions to each computational method involved in the model development process, along with perspectives on how methods can be iterated upon to arrive at a final model. Ultimately, this content can be applied broadly to address questions in synthetic biology and classical chemical engineering.
