The Christmas Season
Pub Date : 1916-12-01 DOI: 10.1300/J095V07N01_06
R. Perske
SUMMARY The Christmas season, while it is traditionally a time of celebration, can be a troubling time for those experiencing grief, loss, or marginalization. Those in institutions such as mental hospitals, institutions for people with mental retardation, and homes for unwed mothers often experience distress during this time. Although it can be veiled by casual remarks, stress, or anger, parishioners often reveal their disturbed feelings in ways that the sensitive pastor can notice. In this sense, an attentive pastor can use the Christmas season for effective pastoral care of those who are disturbed in a wide variety of ways.

Scrupulosity is a form of OCD that raises philosophical puzzles because of its superficial similarities to morally extreme, non-pathological motivation. Cases of Scrupulosity are first presented, then Scrupulosity is characterized as a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) because of its moral or religious obsessions and/or compulsions and its underlying anxiety. Scrupulosity is specifically characterized by perfectionism, chronic doubt and intolerance of uncertainty, and moral thought-action fusion. It is a mental illness and not simply religious devotion, moral virtue, or strength of character. Scrupulous moral judgments differ from genuine moral judgments because their underlying anxiety leads to systematic distortions and leads those with Scrupulosity to act in a way that primarily soothes their anxiety instead of responding to the morally relevant features of the situation. People with Scrupulosity are likely less accountable for harms they cause, which can be explained by reasons-responsiveness theories of responsibility. There is justification for treating Scrupulosity over moral objection without imposing the therapist’s own moral standards.

To the Editor:— In view of the approaching season for possible poliomyelitis epidemics, it seems wise to summarize possible suggestions for limiting the spread of the disease. These suggestions are founded on present day knowledge, viz.: In the presence of the disease in a community: Avoid the use of any water that is possibly contaminated with sewage either for drinking, swimming or washing utensils. We know that sewage can carry the virus considerable distances and for an appreciable time. Avoid exhaustion from exertion or chilling. We know that overexertion and chilling during the incubation period tend to augment the oncoming disease. Avoid injury to the mucous membranes of the nose and throat, such as that resulting from a tonsil operation. We know that poliomyelitis exposures in the early post-tonsillectomy period are liable to result in severe—even fatal—infections, usually of the bulbar type. Treat every minor illness
