Aim: The objective of this study was to retrospectively assess the correlation of malnutrition with mortality and morbidity according to Global Initiative on Malnutrition criteria in patients with the diagnosis of lung cancer hospitalized in the palliative care unit.

Method: The sample of the study consisted of the data of 705 patients with lung cancer, who were hospitalized in the palliative care unit in a training and research hospital between January 2018 and January 2020. All the patients' demographic characteristics, disease-related data, laboratory values, Global Initiative on Malnutrition scores, mortality in the last 3 months, and recurrent hospitalizations in the last 3 months were recorded from the patient records and automation system.

Results: According to the Global Initiative on Malnutrition criteria, 64 (9.2%) of the patients had malnutrition. There was a negative correlation between the ages and the admission albumin levels of patients with malnutrition who passed away in the last 3 months.

Conclusion: No correlation was found between malnutrition and duration of mortality according to Global Initiative on Malnutrition criteria. Moreover, a difference was found between C-reactive protein and albumin levels of the patients according to the degree of malnutrition. It is recommended that nurses should start nutritional assessments of patients immediately when the patient is admitted to hospital.

Aim: This study aimed to determine the influence of nursing care grounded on Watson's Human Care Model on anxiety, dyspnea control, and life quality in palliative care patients.

Method: A randomized controlled study was designed. It was conducted on 64 participants hospitalized in a training and research hospital and 2 state hospital palliative care services in Turkey. The data were collected face to face using the patient information form, the Beck Anxiety Scale, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scale, and the Short Form-36 Quality of Life Scale.

Results: It was detected that there was no statistically considerable difference in the median points of the Beck Anxiety Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scale, and Short Form-36 domains between the two groups in the pretest. However, the posttest median points were remarkably lower and the posttest median points of the Short Form-36 scale were meaningfully higher in the intervention group (p < 0.05).

Conclusion: Nursing care grounded on Human Care Model reduced the grade of anxiety and dyspnea in patients and raised their life quality.

When patients are diagnosed with cancer, they lose the mode of living they have been accustomed to and face difficulties in coping with the new complexed medical condition. In the case of advanced stages of cancer, patients lose the ability to take an active role in decisions related to priority in treatment modality, decision-making, and planning. In addition, these patients lose the ability of choice-to agree to a certain mode of treatment, who will treat them, and where. Thus, these kinds of decisions are between family members and the treating team. This can happen only when both the formal caregivers and to lesser degree the informal partners are exposed to ongoing educational activities and training by both local experienced palliative care experts and international initiated courses (both frontal and remote). This article provides recommendations needed for an effective strategy at national levels to develop appropriate ways, whereby governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations can promote the establishment of palliative care services at all levels from primary to tertiary in each individual country. The basis for the above will rely on the experience that was gained through the application of palliative care principles.

Aim: The objective of this study was to describe the experiences and practices of nurses who provide palliative and end-of-life care to oncology patients, to determine the difficulties they encounter in this regard, and to determine how they cope with it.

Method: Data were collected between December 10 and 27, 2022, at a hospital's palliative care clinic. The descriptive phenomenological approach, which is a qualitative research method, was used in this study. The sample of the study consisted of 12 nurses who provided palliative and end-of-life care to oncology patients in a city hospital. The research data were collected with the nurse descriptive form and a semi-structured interview form. Descriptive statistics and the thematic content analysis method were used in the analysis of the data.

Results: The themes that emerged as a result of the interviews with nurses who provided palliative and end-of-life care to oncology patients in palliative units were "various learning experiences," "responsibilities in caregiving," "nursing care practices," "personal motivation sources for nurses," "difficulties," and "experience in coping with difficulties."

Conclusion: In this study, it was determined that nurses who provide palliative and end-of-life care to oncology patients are exposed to some difficulties as a result of their professional experience, that, in addition, they had various learning experiences, and that their coping skills were team cohesion and training. In line with the results of the study, it is recommended to structure palliative in-service training after graduation, to arrange for palliative care centers, and to consider the problems experienced in determining the needs.

Objective: This study was conducted to examine the effects of post-coronavirus disease 2019 symptoms and functional states of patients on the quality of life. Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 1646 patients in the study between September 1 and October 31, 2021. The data were collected online by sending Patient Information Form, Post-Coronavirus Disease 2019 Symptom Form, Post-Coronavirus Disease 2019 Functional Status Scale, and the reliability of the short form 12 (SF-12) Quality of Life Scale. Results: The symptoms most experienced by the patients in the study were fever (84.7%), headache (83.7%), muscle or joint pain (83.7%), fatigue (83.5%), and cough (82.8%). In terms of coronavirus disease 2019 functional states of the participants, it was found that 23.1% responded as "Limitations in my daily life and occasional need to avoid or decrease ordinary activities,” 22.1% responded as "Limitations in my daily life and cannot perform any of the usual activities.” SF-12 physical sub-dimension mean score was found as 38.1 ± 10.38, while SF-12 mental sub-dimension mean score was found as 42.28 ± 10.38. It was found that the variable of "no limitations in daily life” had a positive effect on SF-12 physical and mental factors, while the variables of age, having limitations in daily life and not being able to perform usual activities, being dependent on someone else due to symptoms, cough, decrease in appetite, drowsiness and dizziness while standing, sleep problems, fever, body rash, and hair fall has a negative and significant effect on SF-12 physical and mental factors. Conclusion: Patients experience limitations in functional states and have a low quality of life in physical and mental dimensions due to post-coronavirus disease 2019 restrictions in daily life. Having limitations in daily life and not being able to perform usual activities, depending on someone else due to symptoms, and ongoing symptoms (cough, decreased appetite, drowsiness and dizziness while standing, sleep problems, fever, body rash, and hair loss) affect the quality of life negatively. © 2023 Sociedad Madrinela de Neumologia y Cirugia Toracica. Objective: The purpose of this study is to reveal the views of health professionals on social media use, paranoia, and work autonomy during the COVID-19 pandemic. For this purpose, a questionnaire was applied to the healthcare workers who accepted voluntary participation with the convenience sampling method, and the research data were collected. Methods: In the study, a sample of 302 healthcare workers in 3 tertiary level foundation university hospitals and a secondary-level private hospital, who accepted to participate in the survey voluntarily, is included by convenience sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire prepared according to a 5-point Likert scale consisting of 3 different scales. Structural equation modeling was done with the help of AMOS program. Results: Data were analyzed statistically. The mediating role of Paranoia Scale sub-dimensions (F1 and F2) in the effect of social media utility and social media anxiety variables, which are Social Media Use scale sub-dimensions, on working autonomy variable was investigated. Cronbach's alpha values of the scales used in the study are at "high reliability level.” In the combined reliability values, since composite reliability > 0.70 was found for all variables, the combined reliability condition was met. The necessary condition (average variance extracted > 0.40) was considered sufficient for the mean explained variance values (average variance extracted > 0.50) for all variables or for convergent validity when it was present in all variables (composite reliability > 0.70). Conclusion: It was found that F1 variable, one of the sub-dimensions of paranoia Scale, had full mediating role on social media utility variable of working autonomy variable and that F2 variable had full mediating role in the effect of social media utility variable on working autonomy variable. It was also determined that the F1 variable did not have a mediating role in the effect of the social media anxiety variable on the working autonomy variable, and the F2 variable had a full mediation role in the effect of the social media anxiety variable on the working autonomy variable. Only healthcare professionals in Istanbul and 4 different private hospitals were included in the study. Expanding the study in public hospitals and with other private hospitals will provide more information on the subject. It is thought that this research will be an original study in terms of getting the opinions of healthcare professionals, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic process. There is no similar study in the literature using the variables and models which were used in this study. © 2023 Sociedad Madrinela de Neumologia y Cirugia Toracica. All rights reserved.
©2023 Sociedad Madrinela de Neumologia y Cirugia Toracica。
