Uncovering Critical Roles for RNA in Neurodegeneration.
Pub Date : 2023-09-01
Yuna M Ayala

RNA-binding proteins, in particular TDP-43, are key players in neurodegenerative disorders, mainly amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia. We aim to elucidate how TDP-43 dysfunction alters cell metabolism and to identify mechanisms linked to aberrant behavior. We find that RNA binding plays a key role in maintaining TDP-43 homeostasis and in controlling cellular organization, two processes of essential importance to TDP-43 pathology. This research will provide insight into pathogenesis and help develop therapeutic interventions.

A Review of the Role of Robotics in Surgery: To DaVinci and Beyond!
Pub Date : 2023-09-01
Patrick Probst

Since its inception in 1985, robotic surgery has evolved into a mainstream surgical approach that has become virtually synonymous with minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and adopted across several specialties offering decreased patient morbidity and improved post-operative outcomes. This article discusses the current role of robotics in MIS and its varied applications, prevalence in the community and the future of the field.

Current Understanding of Dietary Fiber and Its Role in Chronic Diseases.

Dietary fiber (DF) is an essential, albeit under-consumed, component in the North American diet. DF is thought to have anti-inflammatory disease-modifying effects via DF-related gut microbiota degradation products called short chain fatty acids. Thus far studies have shown the greatest associations between DF intake and risk reduction in obesity, improved weight loss outcomes, and risk reduction of cardiovascular disease (CVD). There is weak evidence associating DF intake and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) risk, IBD remission, reduced risk of Crohn's disease (CD flares, and no evidence showing any benefit towards ulcerative colitis (UC) specifically. Evidence on DF intake and the risk reduction of colorectal cancer (CRC) has been equivocal. Studies were limited by a lack of randomization or in controlling fiber types and sources. Based on the current beneficial associations of DF on obesity management and CVD, counseling patients to increase DF intake may be a cost-effective measure to decrease the burden of chronic disease.

Supporting the Resilience and Mental Health of Missouri Healthcare Workers Through COVID-19 and Beyond: the Gateway2Wellness Program.

The COVID-19 pandemic is over, but US healthcare workers (HCWs) continue to report high levels of work-related exhaustion and burnout but are unlikely to seek help. Digital tools offer a scalable solution. Between February and June 2022, we surveyed Missouri hospital administrators to assess HCW mental health and identify related evidence-based or evidence-informed resources. Simultaneously, we conducted a digital survey and focus groups with HCWs and leaders at Washington University School of Medicine (WUSOM) in St. Louis to evaluate HCW mental health needs, and preferences for digital support. Here, we describe the results and subsequent development of the Gateway to Wellness (G2W) program, a digital precision engagement platform that links HCWs to the most effective tailored resources for their mental health needs.
