Characteristics of racism and the health consequences experienced by black nursing faculty.
Ora V Robinson

Few studies have examined the health consequences of racism experienced by Black nursing professors. A cohort of nine Black nursing professors at various academic ranks responded to a series of questions on racism, coping and intervention strategies to reduce the harmful health consequences. Findings identified behavioral characteristics of racism, resiliency factors of coping, and suggested workshops to minimize the effects of racism within the nursing profession. Implications include workshops on critical self reflection and rules of engagement. A question raised for future research "how to create a racially/ethnic inclusive and psychosocial healthy academic work environment"?

Caucasion allied health students' attitudes towards African Americans: implications for instruction and research.
Robin Steed

In order to determine Caucasian allied health student racial attitudes towards the African American population, students and faculty of a Southern school of allied health professions were surveyed using the Racial Argument Scale (RAS). A one way ANOVA found a significant difference between allied health programs, p = .008, and post hoc testing found the Occupational Therapy Program's scores to be significantly lower (less negative towards Blacks) than the Physical Therapy and Physician Assistant Program's scores (p = .008 and p = .041 respectively). Student scores overall were significantly higher than faculty scores on the RAS (p = .014). The Speech-Language Pathology, Physician Assistant, and Physical Therapy Programs' scores as well the overall allied health student scores were found to be significantly higher than the population mean, thus indicating a higher negativity towards African Americans. The overall results of this study indicate that negative racial bias may be a serious problem in some allied health programs. Future instruction in cultural competency in allied health programs should address racial bias specifically, taking into account cognitive-perceptual errors that may perpetuate negative racial attitudes.

What is personal health responsibility?
Shalonda Estelle-Brazzell Horton

Purpose: This case study examined the meaning of personal health responsibility from the perspective of the individual.

Method: A single Black female, 20 years of age, was interviewed for the study. Content analysis was used for data evaluation.

Findings: The meaning of personal health responsibility grouped into four categories: listing of tasks, obligating to tasks, following through with tasks, and maintaining resources. Tasks are behaviors performed to care for oneself. Obligating to tasks is the attitude towards carrying out behaviors. Following through is the actual completion of a task. Maintaining resources is the support needed to care for oneself.

Implications: The individual's definition of personal health responsibility should be considered when making healthcare decisions and designing treatment plans. Future research should examine the meaning of personal health responsibility among diverse populations and explore factors that serve as facilitators and barriers to personal health responsibility.

Cecil Holland, Dana L Carthron, Vanessa Duren-Winfield, Wanda Lawrence

Objective: To pilot test a culturally specific and developmentally appropriate curriculum for African-American college students that included self and family assessment to increase awareness of their risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Methods: Students were recruited from a historically Black university to participate in small group workshops focusing to increase their knowledge of their family history of CVD as well as reducing CVD risks. Focus groups were conducted to determine the effectiveness and ways to improve to the intervention.

Results: Positive findings were found regarding program efficacy, increased understanding of their family history and strategies to reduce their own risk of CVD.

Conclusion: Small group experiential workshop approach can be effective in helping African- American college students understand risk and establish healthy heart habits aimed at decreasing risk of coronary heart disease.

Influence of sense of coherence, spirituality, social support and health perception on breast cancer screening motivation and behaviors in African American women.
Regina Conway-Phillips, Linda Janusek

Despite formidable barriers, some African American women (AAW) engage in breast cancer screening (BCS) behaviors. Understanding individual characteristics that allow AAW to overcome barriers to BCS is critical to reduce breast cancer mortality among AAW. A salutogenic model of health was used to evaluate the influence of sense of coherence, social support, spirituality and health perception on BCS motivation and behaviors in AAW, and to determine differences in these factors in AAW who participate in free BCS programs compared to AAW who do not. Findings revealed that greater levels of spirituality were significantly associated with greater motivation to practice BCS. Further, women who utilized free BCS programs reported significantly greater rates of both performing and of intent to perform breast self examinations (BSE) in the future, obtaining clinical breast exams and mammograms. Findings can inform the development of culturally specific programs to improve the utilization of BCS programs by AAW.

Weight changes in African American college students: a review of literature.
Shavon Darden

Over one-third of all adults in the United States are obese and African Americans represent over 49.5% of these cases. Young adults with some college education show the most rapid increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity, with African Americans leading among all groups. The purpose of this paper is to consider why students gain weight in college and if racial and ethnic differences exist in the context of weight gain. Both physical environment and psychological factors affect the college students' weight-related behaviors. College students experience significant increases in their weight and African Americans are disproportionately affected. However, the role of race and ethnicity is under-examined. Future research should explore racial and ethnic differences in weight gain in college students.

An examination of postpartum African American adolescents' sociocultural beliefs, perceptions of body weight, and weight control behaviors.
Thelma Phillips

Obesity presents a public health challenge and is a serious chronic medical condition that is associated with multiple co-morbidities and reduced survivability/longevity. African American adolescents who retain weight after pregnancy are at the highest risk of becoming obese adults. Obesity is associated with 300,000 deaths per year and expected to cost the US. health care system over 237 million dollars within the next decade. The prevalence of obesity is cause for concern because of its economic costs and its toll in human suffering due to related morbidity and mortality. This study seeks to understand the meaning or essence of the lived experience of obesity among postpartum African American adolescents based on a literature review indicating the need for such a qualitative research. Understanding the influence of their developmental stage, sociocultural perceptions, and perceptions of postpartum weight retention could help develop population-specific interventions that could reduce the health risk of obesity.

A journey to the bible lands: a call from the past to the present in astonishing ways.
Geraldine Brown

I traveled to the Middle East six times between 1978 and 200. These trips will always remain among my most precious memories. These trips included visiting Tele Aviv, Jerusalem (Old and New), Bethlehem, Haifa, Galilee, Golan Heights, Tiberius, Temple Mount, Ein Gedi Beach (Dead Sea), the Masada, Sinai, Caesarea, and Megiddo (Armageddon). The Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Inc. (New York City) was the Host Church, with Dr. Robert Spellman (a Senior Professor at Essex County College (New Jersey), Bishop/Pastor of the Macedonia Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ (Newark, NJ), and Bible Seminar Teacher, was the Tour Leader. During these travels, many airlines were used, including British Airways, El Al, Olympia, Lufthansa, and Alitalia. Side trips included Egypt, Jordan (Petra), and Europe (Greece, London, Paris, Rome). This tour in my own words, hopefully will entice and enlighten others to plan a trip to the most sacred ground on earth. I trust there will be as much enjoyment as I have had and am still having in sharing the biblical knowledge as it relates to the Bible lessons I learned over the years in Sunday School and actually comparing them today with the Holy Land itself.

Self-perceived healthcare needs for African American women in street-level prostitution: strategies for interventions.
Lola M Prince

Prostituted women have a unique combination of overall healthcare needs. This qualitative study explored the general health and perceived healthcare needs for eleven women. Lack of access to affordable culturally sensitive health clinics, individual mental health counseling, and healthy nutrition were unmet needs. Cultural sensitivity training and formation of partnerships among health care providers at Federally Qualified Health Centers with those in the social service and behavioral health fields could facilitate the provision of integrated healthcare services.
