Mentoring as the key to minority success in nursing education. 辅导是少数民族护理教育成功的关键。
Nicole Crooks

Though the number of minorities is steadily increasing in the United States, the number of minority nurses is not growing in equal proportion. Minority nursing students are often faced with barriers that prevent their success in rigorous nursing programs. MENTOR is a program that can be implemented into any nursing curriculum using a semester format. The purpose of the program is to provide ethnically diverse students with the support and resources they need to successfully graduate. The tools needed to implement a program such as MENTOR into a nursing curriculum is provided.

Breast health teaching in predominantly African American rural Mississippi Delta. 以非裔美国人为主的密西西比三角洲农村地区的乳腺保健教学。
Kaye Wilson-Anderson, P Renee Williams, Tracilia Beacham, Naekhia McDonald

This study's primary focus was breast health education to rural African American women in Mississippi and training of community members. Through practice in this area, women were found to lack knowledge of breast health which is the third leading cause of death in Mississippi Black women. They were open to education: N = 130, t = -16.6, df = 126, p < .001; 1 year, N = 35; 2-3 year N = 16 and 3 trained. Data suggest knowledge increased, a small percentage continued practices and community members would become trainers. One participant was diagnosed with breast cancer, received treatment and remained cancer-free after two years.

Paradigm shift: curriculum change. 范式转变:课程改变。
Karen Faison, Frances Montague

The purpose of this article is to discuss the curriculum change process in an associate degree nursing program in a southeastern university. Recent changes in the healthcare arena have documented the need for change in the delivery of healthcare services and the preparation of healthcare providers. Nurses as the largest group of professionals in this setting have begun to examine the current delivery of nursing care to patients (HRSA, 2010). This has major implications for the prelicensure nursing curriculum. Curriculum change is a process that includes evidenced based preparation and continuous evaluation. Intensive faculty support is essential at all levels. The department of nursing has begun the change process. This involves professional development activities to prepare the nursing faculty for the preparation of a sound curriculum to prepare the next generation of nurses.

Motivators to engage in health promotion activities by low-income black fathers. 低收入黑人父亲参与健康促进活动的动机。
Wilma J Calvert, E Paulette Isaac-Savage

There has been increasing concern about the health status of low-income Black fathers. Little is known about their motivators to participate in health promotion activities. This descriptive qualitative research study explored these motivators. Focus groups were used to gather the data. Themes included avoiding specific diseases, helping others, a personal desire to learn, and modeling positive behaviors. These findings provide baseline data that might be used to develop community interventions targeting this group. Additional work will focus on validating these results and further exploration of some of the motivators verbalized by these participants.

Effects of social support and spirituality on weight loss for rural African-American women. 社会支持和精神对非洲裔农村妇女减肥的影响。
Sanggon Nam

Obesity continues to be an increasing health problem among African-American women. A 10-week weight-loss intervention program designed to address the problem in these women. Two different interventions (spiritually based and nonspiritually based) were tested, and both utilized a pre-test, posttest design On the basis of theories of social support, it was expected that participation in the intervention would produce a significant reduction in weight. In addition, the spiritual-based weight-loss program was hypothesized to produce greater weight reduction than the standard health (non-spiritual) program. The results demonstrated that the average weight and BMI of all participants in either a spiritually-based or a nonspiritually-based program were lower at the completion of the intervention program. In addition, the average weight and BMI loss for the spiritual group was significantly greater than the average weight and BMI loss for the non-spiritual group.

Visiting the USSR: a trip of a lifetime. 访问苏联:一生难忘的旅行。
Geraldine Brown

To Russia, who me? That is actually how it all began. A decade or more ago, I had the opportunity to visit what was then known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), Russia. Although, this place held high priority on my list of places to go, I never thought such a trip was within my reach. This idea was quite fascinating to me because of the events that did happen there, including the Russian space ship Sputnik and the dog, the high stepping military officers, Red Square and the St. Basil's Cathedral. After reading a lot about Russia, I thought it would be great to see a clean place, where it was unlawful to throw paper on the streets, and ride in public transportation such as the buses, taxis and the subway system, which were immaculately clean. It was an exciting trip, one, I will always remember, but would be a difficult adjustment to make, to live.
