Previous experiments have shown that extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields could cause serious effects on the evolution of cells. We propose a mathematical model which confirms those results. In our model, electromagnetic waves could cause the motions of ions and charges and the emergence of some currents around and in the interior of cells. These currents produce some waves which interact with the DNAs and remove or attach some repressors. Consequently, some genes could be turned on or off, and cells could obtain some properties or lose them. The frequency of the external waves should be close to the frequency of the exchanged waves between the repressors and DNAs or even bigger than them. We test this idea and did some experiments on quail embryonic cells. We connected a sample of these cells to a battery and considered their evolution. We observed that after connecting the battery and the production of electrical current, some rings around the quail embryonic cells emerged. Maybe, these rings are the response of the cells to changes in electromagnetic waves and electrical currents.

The present article includes data on the possible selective cytotoxic effect of extract of Ribes nigrum L. growing at high Armenian landscape. For this purpose, different non-cancer (microglial BV-2 wild type (Wt), acyl-CoA oxidase 1 (ACOX1) deficient (Acox1−/−) and cancer (human colon adenocarcinoma HT29 and human breast cancer MCF7) cell lines were applied. R. nigrum leaf ethanol extract showed a growth inhibition effect towards HT29 and MCF7 cells started from 6 h of treatment at the concentration of 0.5 mg/mL DW. The lowest concentration (0.125 mg/mL DW) of the investigated extract expressed cytotoxicity after 72 hours following cancer cell treatment. In contrast to the cancer cells, in the case of the tested non-cancer cells, cytotoxic effect was not observed at the applied concentrations. The extract sub-cytotoxic concentration, in this case, was reported to be the 1 mg/mL DW. Further investigations are needed to confirm the selective cytotoxicity and possible action mechanisms of the leaf extract of R. nigrum.

Density of electric field energy around two surface-charged spheres surrounded by electrolyte II. The smaller sphere is inside the larger one

Based on the generalized version of Newton's Shell Theorem [7] the electric field energy density, uF around two surface-charged spheres surrounded by electrolyte where the smaller sphere is inside the larger one is analytically calculated. According to the calculations when the surfaces of the spheres are farther from each other than four times of the Debye length the field energy density around and inside the smaller sphere is basically independent from the presence of the larger sphere. The electric field energy density is maximal when the smaller sphere touches the inner surface of the larger sphere and the maximum of uF is located at the touching point on the outer surface of the larger sphere.

They can assist the health care professionals in working more efficiently by saving time and improving patient care. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and 3D printing technology are useful for improving diagnosis and treatment planning, creating algorithms and manufacturing customized orthodontic appliances. AI accomplishes the task of human beings with the help of machines and technology. In orthodontics, AI-based models have been used for diagnosis, treatment planning, clinical decision-making and prognosis prediction. It minimizes the required workforce and speeds up the diagnosis and treatment procedure. In addition, the 3D printing technology is used to fabricate study models, clear aligner models, surgical guides for inserting mini-implants, clear aligners, lingual appliances, wires components for removable appliances and occlusal splints. This paper is a review of the future and scope of AI and 3D printing technology in orthodontics.

The current study presents a bimodal therapeutic platform for cancer treatment. Bimodal implies that the presented drug loaded core-shell structure is capable of elevating the tumor tissue temperature (hyperthermia) through the superparamagnetic iron oxide core and simultaneously release a Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase-1(PARP-1)-modifying agent from the thermoresponsive shell. Magnetic thermoresponsive nanocomposite MTN was synthesized via an in situ free radical polymerization of thermo-responsive (N-isopropylacrylamide) (NIPAAm) monomer in the presence of 11-nm monodisperse SPIONs. The composite was allowed to swell in various concentrations of the PARP inhibitor: 5-aminoisoquinoline (5-AIQ) forming drug-loaded magnetic thermoresponsive nanocomposite (MTN-5.AIQ). Structural characterization of the formed composite is studied via various experimental tools. To assess the coil to globule transition temperature, the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) is determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) method and the cloud point (Tp) is determined by turbidometry. Magnetic thermoresponsive nanocomposite (MTN) is formed with excellent potential for hyperthermia. A high drug loading efficiency (85.72%) is obtained with convenient temperature dependent drug release kinetics. Biocompatibility and cytotoxic efficacy are tested on an in vivo and in vitro colorectal-adenocarcinoma model, respectively. MTN.5-AIQ administration exhibits normal hepatic and renal functions as well as lower toxic effect on normal tissue. In addition, the composite effectively inhibits Caco-2 cells viability upon incubation. Based on the obtained results, the proposed therapeutic platform can be considered as a novel, promising candidate for dual therapy of colorectal adenocarcinoma exhibiting a PARP-1 overexpression. as well as increased the inhabiting efficacy of 5-AIQ.

The molecular structure and spectroscopic analysis of the Temozolomide molecule have been performed using the density functional theory in neutral and anion states as well as with the addition of DMSO solvent. The 6-311G(d) basis set was employed to optimize the molecular structure of the TMZ molecule using the DFT/B3LYP method. The HOMO-LUMO energies and MEP map were computed to determine the energy gap and probable sites of electrophilic and nucleophilic reactivity in the 6-311G+(d) basis set. The vibrational frequencies were calculated using a computational method and the major fundamental modes of vibration were assigned to their respective frequencies. The potential of the computational method to explain the vibrational modes was determined by comparing simulated spectra with experimental spectra. On isotope labeling of carbon, the frequency was shifted significantly.

In the presented work, we aimed to investigate the antioxidant and possible neuroprotective capacity of extract of the aerial parts of Hypericum alpestre, found in high altitude Armenian landscape. The neuroprotective activity was evaluated using BV-2 wild type (WT) cells and acyl-CoA oxidase 1 (ACOX1) deficient (Acox1-/-) microglial cell lines. In the chemical-based tests, H. alpestre extract showed high antioxidant activity, which was maintained even after heat treatment at 121 °C for 30 min. MTT test showed that the sub-cytotoxic concentration of investigated extracts for both microglial cell lines was 40 µg/mL. There were no significant changes in catalase activity during all period of treatment in both cell lines, meanwhile, SOD activity increased (up to 30%) in WT cells during the 48 h treatment. Increase of SOD activity (up to 50%) in Acox-/- cells was observed under the 24 h treatment. Significant modulation in activity of palmitoyl-CoA oxidase 1 was noticed only during the 48 h treatment of WT microglial cells. These results evidenced the pro-oxidant activity of the investigated extract. This finding can serve as a basis for further evaluation of plant extracts influence on cancer cell lines.

A Wiener process with jumps to model the logarithm of new epidemic cases
IF 1.5 Q3 Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology Pub Date : 2022-01-01 DOI: 10.3934/biophy.2022023

The number of daily new cases of an epidemic is assumed to evolve as the exponential of a Wiener process with Poissonian jumps that are exponentially distributed. The model parameters can be estimated by using the method of moments. In an application to the COVID-19 pandemic in the province of Québec, Canada, the proposed model is shown to be acceptable. General formulas for the probability that a given increase in the number of daily new cases is due to the normal variations of the continuous part of the process or rather to a jump of this process are given. Based on these formulas, the probability of observing the likely start of a new wave of infections is calculated for the application to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The understanding of the biomembranes structural properties represents a fundamental step in the comprhension of the processes that regulate their functions, within the expecialised tissues of the living cells. More specifically, how lipids and proteins are organized in membranes at the molecular level is one of the most fundamental questions in membrane biophysics. Moreover, biomimetic (model) systems, require advanced methods of preparation as well as appropriately specialized tools for investigation. This special issue provides an opportunity for researchers from different disciplines to share their research results on processes occurring in biological (and model) membranes by means of a broad spectrum of approaches to the topic.
