The objectives of this study were to characterize, classify and evaluate the potential and constraints of the soils of Sakure and Nginda Payams in Nzara and Yambio counties in the Greenbelt zone of Western Equatoria State, South Sudan. Ten soil pits were dug, described and sampled based on FAO soil profile description guideline and samples were analysed using standard routine lab analyses for physical and chemical properties. Data generated were analysed statistically using the coefficient of variation (CV) and correlation. Results showed that top and subsoil were dominated by sandy clay loams. The soil reactions were strongly to slightly acidic (pH = 5.4 - 6.7). The most limiting nutrients were P and N. SOC was highest in the top soil and consistently decreased with depth, the CEC was low (4 - 14.4 Cmol kg -1 ). The soils were classified into six major soil types: Ferralsol, retisols, acrisols, umbrisols, fluvisols, and chernozems. The soils have poor inherent soil fertility. It is recommended that further soil survey be carried out in the Greenbelt zone and to conduct more research to determine the type of soil fertility management feasible.

For decades, debates among African leaders have centred on possible solutions to the continent's food security dilemma. If not addressed, the continued increase in population density and the accompanying pressures from conflicting demands for land in many Sub-Saharan African nations, including Nigeria, have the potential to exacerbate the arable land situation in the near future. To achieve increased production, African farmers must increase their use of productivity-enhancing tools such as irrigation, improved seeds, fertilizer, and modern farm management practices. The use of Urea Deep Placement (UDP) technology to boost nitrogen availability, a key ingredient in rice production, was introduced to rice farmers in selected Northern Nigerian states. Empirical information on the economics of the use of this technology in rice production is scanty, hence this study. Based on data collected from three hundred UDP users and non-users, this study examined the cost structure, the profitability and productivity of rice farm in the presence of technological heterogeneity. The study employed descriptive statistics, logistic regression, and the Latent class generation modes. The data was divided into two groups based on their production functions. The study concluded that farmers that used urea deep production technology outperformed non-users. However, in the short run, this technology is labour intensive. To solve the excessive labour use in the short run and to make rice production appealing to the young people who make up the majority of Nigeria's labour force, labour-saving technology must be combined with UDP technology.

Commercial fodder farming is rapidly expanding in Laikipia County, Kenya and there is an emerging market formation involving different market actors. Several market outlets are at the farmers’ disposal for channelling their fodder to consumers. The purpose of this study was therefore, to determine the factors which influence choices of fodder market outlets in Laikipia County. Using data from 204 fodder farmers, the Multivariate Probit model was used to estimate the determinants of farmers’ choice of fodder market outlets. Findings revealed that, the choice of local livestock farmers, local traders and buyers from other counties’ outlets was significantly influenced by age, experience, commercialization index, fodder quality, marketing costs, market agreements, market distance, market information, proactivity and price in varied directions and intensities. Therefore, collective action is recommended for easy access to market information, better prices, reduced marketing costs and proactive uptake of fodder business by fodder farmers. Policy interventions should focus on improving fodder quality and strengthening market linkages through contract farming and promoting access to fodder markets. To improve fodder productivity while simultaneously augmenting the amount of fodder offered for sale at various fodder outlets, stakeholders should take advantage of farmers’ experience and entrepreneurial orientation to guide their investments.

Sweetpotato is an important food, feed and vegetable crop in Niger and Nigeria. The adoption of a new variety depends on famers and consumers preferences. The objective of this study was to identify sweetpotato preferred traits by end-users in Niger and Nigeria. The study was conducted in two countries through participatory rural appraisal. The results revealed that sweetpotato is produced by men in Niger, while it is mostly produced by women in South-East Nigeria. In Niger, 100% of cultivated varieties were landraces, while 75.00% in Nigeria were landraces. Results showed that in Niger, farmers preferred high yielding, white flesh colour, and drought tolerant varieties, while in Nigeria they preferred high yielding, white flesh colour, and earliness cultivars. Traders and consumers in both countries preferred healthy, white flesh colour and big storage root size varieties. There is a need of effective breeding program in Niger, and both countries should turn toward developing cultivars with high yield, drought tolerant, and pest and disease resistant.

Tomato, a fruit vegetable, is widely used in many dish components such as soup, stew/sauce, salad, and juice with many benefits. Even though annual and perishable, tomatoes are required yearly for use. Tomato production thus serves as a livelihood and food security activity across the country with different varieties. Some of these varieties, however, do not meet production criteria and consumer preferences. As such, introducing the twenty-four disease and pest-resistance varieties will help ease the burden on farmers and the frequent losses associated with the cultivation of non-resistant varieties. The tomato variety experimentations were conducted at Nyangua in the Kassena Nankana East Municipality of the Upper East Region of Ghana. Samples from the 24 disease-resistant varieties were collected for laboratory analysis on fruit skin colour, titratable acidity, moisture content, total soluble solutes, and vitamin C. The analyses were conducted using the official methods of analysis by the association of official and analytical chemists. Laboratory results were analysed for variance (ANOVA) using Minitab statistical software. Results indicated all twenty-four varieties contained adequate nutritional value for consumer acceptance, having passed the production phase successfully. It is, however, recommended that the varieties be commercially produced for farmers' use. Key words: Vegetable, Solanum lycopersicum, pathological resistance, nutrient composition, fruit quality, commercial production.

Parsley is a plant widely used in cooking as a condiment and it has potential for pharmaceutical use due to flavonoids production, including the apiin, which has antioxidant activity. The current study investigates the influence of N fertilization on the biomass production, soluble fractions, total flavonoids and apiin in the parsley plants at 28 and 56 days after germination (DAG). The experiment was carried out in the greenhouse under different N levels: nitrogen free (control), 10 kg N ha -1 (10 kg N ha -1 at planting, without cover application of N) and 70 kg N ha -1 (10 kg of N ha -1 at planting and 60 kg of N ha -1 in cover). The biomass production and soluble fractions was influenced by harvest timing and nitrogen fertilization. The total flavonoid levels were lower at 56 DAG under the N fertilization effect. The highest levels of apiin were detected at 28 DAG in treatments with N fertilization. Thus, the harvest time at 28 DAG and N fertilization with 10 kg ha -1 yielded the highest apiin concentration and, therefore, less production time and costs with N fertilization.
