A review of four distinct surgical procedures, designed to provide coverage of denuded root surfaces resulting from gingival recession, is presented. Each procedure is supported by photographs illustrating the surgical technique for each. Principles yielding a high degree of predictability, applied to appropriately diagnosed and selected cases are reviewed.

Enamel Micro-abrasion is a technique where an acid is used in combination with an abrasive to remove the superficial layer of enamel which has certain dental colorants within its structure. It is indicated as the treatment of choice for superficial enamel stains and is a technique which every dentist should offer to their patients. It is a simple, conservative, efficient and durable procedure.

For this reason, the dental team should be aware of the changes due to aging in the communication processes and their effect on relations with elderly patients. The author explains how to communicate with elderly patients in order to develop a better working relationship with them.

Nutritional and medical factors may influence dental treatment for the elderly. The aim of this paper is to review these factors for the practitioner who provides treatment for the aged. Better knowledge should lead to a greater facility in providing treatment for this group of people.

One of the important mandates given to community health departments is to study and evaluate, in collaboration with other establishments, the organization and functioning of the territorial health services and, as a result, assure that everyone becomes part of the global picture of health and social service resources. It is for this specific reason that the Community Health Department of the Verdun Hospital Centre (DSC Verdun) dealt with the concept of accessibility to dental services for seniors living in nursing homes. We began by evaluating this clientele in order to verify the 1982 findings of researchers Simard, Brodeur, Kandelman and Lepage on the oral-dental health of Quebecers of 65 years of age and more. We found that in the territory around the DSC Verdun that the state of oral-dental health of the elderly living in nursing homes was quite deplorable and even worse than the average found throughout Quebec. Furthermore, we noticed the absence of dental clinics and services in almost all the establishments. Some elements of a solution will be reviewed in this article.

Mental confusion is an affliction of the aged. It is caused by acute and chronic brain disorders and by regressive tissue changes in the brain associated with aging. The mentally confused patient requiring dental care presents significant problems for the dentist. Oral diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment procedures are all seriously influenced by the patient's confused mental state necessitating a carefully programmed interview technique, possible modifications in prescribed treatment and behavioural management during treatment.

Perio-prostheses that have failed can often be salvaged after abutment teeth are extracted to be "converted" to immediate provisional removable prostheses. Beyond convenience, such prostheses can often be superior to conventional laboratory constructed immediate temporary prostheses.

Many elements can influence the successful dental treatment of the elderly patient. The purpose of this article is to briefly review these elements so that the reader is aware of their importance in approaching and treating the geriatric patient. Some of the principal factors discussed that must be considered are psychological, social and economical. The dental team, aware of these factors, will treat the elderly patients more easily.
