The present study addresses two questions. Does the incidence of dental anomalies differ among the four following types of cleft lip and palate: the isolated cleft palate, the unilateral cleft lip and palate, (right or left), and the bilateral cleft lip and palate. Furthermore is the sexual incidence comparable among the four above mentioned types? Radiographic records and complete family history of clefting of 156 patients with a complete cleft lip and palate were obtained from the Cleft Lip and Palate Teams of Ste-Justine Hospital. Patients in which the cleft was part of a syndrome were excluded from the study. According to the analysis of the data, the incidence of dental anomalies was relatively high, specifically as high as 92% for the bilateral cleft lip and palate. The sexual incidence differed among the four types.

An analysis of the clinical features of Pierre Robin syndrome is presented. The main characteristics relative to the clinical aspect, diagnosis, etiopathogenicity and treatment are described. The prognosis and evolution of the syndrome are finally analyzed.

A case of peripheral ossifying fibroma is presented. The important clinical and histological features are discussed, along with the differential diagnosis, treatment and prognosis.

Since our last publication in this Journal in February 1988, many new dentifrices have appeared on the market, prompting us to revise our scale of relative abrasion for the most current ones. This relative abrasion scale is determined by weight loss of mechanically brushed specimens (methyl methacrylate) with a slurry from each dentifrice.

The healing potential of periodontal osseous defects treated by scaling and root planing is demonstrated by the presentation of two clinical cases.

This study is intended to detail the relative level of adaptation (at the hiatus palatinus) of five (5) acrylic resins used in partial and complete prosthodontics (Formatray, Orthodontic, Triad, Lucitone, Ivocap). These five (5) resins have been treated to five (5) different methods of conservation (in water at different temperatures, to air and to cold) to discover which of these methods are most likely to conserve the accuracy of adaptation one looks for in a resin.

This article highlights a certain number of clinical conditions where one can encounter facial asymmetry. Among the many different etiological factors detailed are developmental anomalies, including those associated with under-development or over-development, asymmetry associated with trauma, as well as, those related to tumors. An in-depth analysis will allow a dentist to review differential diagnosis relative to asymmetry and note those within their competency level.

Curettage in periodontics conveys considerable confusion, but may be clarified by applying it to these distinct procedures--root curettage, gingival curettage and periodontal curettage. Root curettage is root planing preformed with a curette and is an essential step in the treatment of all periodontal patients to reduce inflammation and afford the opportunity to achieve varying degrees of repair. Gingival curettage is a surgical procedure removing the gingival crevicular epithelium and is of no additional benefit than scaling and root planing alone. Periodontal curettage may be employed in the treatment of osseous defects whereby the granulation tissue contents of the defect are surgically removed. This procedure, applied in appropriate cases, has significant regenerative potential.

A case of severe Secondary Herpes Simplex infection is presented and the possibility of a secondary infection by Enterobacter cloacae is discussed.

Many types of materials are available for the regeneration of the periodontium destroyed by periodontal disease. In view of the fact that there are not many properly structured classical studies relative to the same, one cannot conclude that these materials regenerate bone, the periodontal ligament and the cementum which make up the periodontium. In this article, many classical studies relative to the use of bone grafts are carefully examined and analyzed.
