Morphological examination of the liver and biochemical studies of the serum were carried out on rats fed: a) ethanol p.o. in the daily dose of 6 g/kg for 4 weeks and maintained on standard diet (Et-OH) and b) ethanol in the same doses but fed the BCAA enriched diet (to amount of 1.174 mM/day/rat) were carried out. It can be concluded that BCAA enriched diet given simultaneously with ethanol prevent in part the morphological and ultrastructural changes in liver and improve positive body weight gain of experimental animals.

From May 1985 to the end of February 1988 the Department of Immunopathology carried out serological studies of 518 samples of the blood serum and made an immunomorphological analysis of 518 hepatic specimens taken by needle biopsy from chronic HBsAg carries. In four cases we found the presence of antigen delta (HDV Ag) in the nuclei of the hepatocytes. These are the first fully documented by immunomorphological and serological methods cases of HDV infection in Poland. We also discussed the epidemiology and biology of viral infection in delta hepatitis.

HLA-DR Antigen expression was shown in the small intestinal mucosa sampled by aspiration biopsy in 12 children infected with Giardia intestinalis. The studies were performed by using three immunohistochemical techniques, with the best results achieved by use of fluorescein- stained avidin biotin system. HLA-DR Antigen expression in Giardiasis was slightly enhanced in the enterocytes of the absorption region; an increased number of HLA-DR positive cells was also found in the lamina propria of the small intestine as compared with controls. This phenomenon is recognized in various inflammations of the small intestinal mucosa.

The aim of the study was to evaluate morphological changes occurring in an experimentally reconstructed anterior cruciate ligament. Experimental studies concerned 20 New Zealand rabbits. We showed the phasic character of morphological changes within the intra-articularly transposed ligament. The phase of transplant revascularization and maturation of collagen fibers were considered the most significant.

The paper is a histo-clinical analysis of 75 cases of vulvar dystrophy defined so far as leukoplakia or kraurosis vulvae. The series included 31 cases of hypertrophic dystrophy, 34 cases of lichen sclerosus and 10 cases of mixed dystrophy. In 52 cases changes developed after menopause. In two cases cellular atypia was found. Itching was the most frequent physical symptom. In the paper current views on the connection vulvar dystrophy with the development of invasive vulvar carcinoma have also been discussed.

Immunocytochemical methods (ER-ICA) by using monoclonal antibodies were applied to determine the presence of estrogen receptors (ER) in 44 primary breast cancers in women. Of this 48% of the tumours were classified as receptor positive. In these tumours the nuclei had a clearly positive heterogenous colouration. In three cases a positive reaction was also found in benign epithelial cells of the breast. ER determinations by ER-ICA method were compared with quantitative analysis carried out by using radioligand and immunoenzymatic methods. There was a strong correlation between immunocytochemical ER evaluations and quantitative methods. We also found a correlation of the menopause state and patients age and ER content.

The author describes the principles of studying the urine by using millipore technique searching for neoplastic cells. The technique consists in passing the urine sample through a biological filter containing pores of specific diameter (millipore) allowing to condense the cellular and amorphous elements of the urine in a small surface and to obtain preparations of a good quality. This technique is recommended especially in case of transparent urine remaining within the limits of norm on gross examination.
