Most of the periapical tissue lesions appear as radiolucent areas in a reontgenogram. However, several lesions of pulpal and periodontal origin as well as lesions caused by benign or malignant tumors appear in the roentgenogram as radiopaque areas. This article deals in detail with the classification, differential diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases which appear radiopaque in an X-ray film. Special attention is given to apical condensing osteitis, hypercementosis, chronic osteomyelitis and odontogenic tumors. These lesions are fairly common and the general practitioner should be familiar with their diagnosis and treatment.

It is well known that many streptococcal species are members of the microbial flora of the mouth. We refer to the most important laboratory technics for collecting, transporting and storage, of streptococci, as well as to the manners of isolation, grouping and identification. We describe in detail the two newest of these methods that we use in our laboratory: a) The method "Streptex" by Wellcome Co., England, and b) The method "Api 20 Strep", by Api System S.A. France.

The aim of this study was to investigate the position of the mandibular foramen in relation to the width of the ramus and the gonial angle of the mandible. One hundred fourty-two dry human mandibles of adults were used. It was found that only the size of the gonial angle affects the anterioposterior position of the foramen. We didn't observe any relation between the inferior-superior position of the foramen and the above parameters.

In this clinico statistical study we tried to evaluate the program of education and the dental care provided by the clinic of Endodontics of the Athens University Dental School. The material for this study was the data from 2726 pulpless teeth. The endodontic treatment was done by the students of the 5th year at the Department of Endodontics during the year 1983-1987. The statistical analysis of the material of all the cases was based on: the possibility of perfect obluration of the root canal and the existence of periapical lesions in relation to the teeth group, the jaw and the age of the patient. The evaluation of the results proved that the education and treatment were satisfactory in quantity and quality. It was also found that the success of the obturation depended on the teeth group and had nothing to do with age. It was also found that the biggest percentage of periapical lesions concerned the anterior teeth.

Fractures or caries may complicate prosthetic restoration of endodontically treated teeth especially when they are extending subgingivally. This study refers to the problem and summarises the current concepts of treatment concerning orthodontic occlusal movement and prosthetic restoration of subgingivally located roots. Clinical cases are also presented.

This is a review of the literature about the contemporary aspects of microbial permeability of dentin. They are discussed the factors that are responsible for this question and analytically: the structure of dentin, the composition of dentin in organic and inorganic ingredients, the response mechanisms of dentin, that is the irritation dentin and sclerotic dentin, the hypermineralized zone under carious lesions, the role of saliva and dentinal fluid, the role of pulp and its microcirculation against the invasion of microbes and, the role of smear layer. Also this article refers to the immunological reaction of the pulp and finally to the role of dentist in the permeability of dentin, because the more conservative is a tooth preparation the less is the permeability of dentin. In conclusion, the microbial permeability of dentin is a very complicated biological phenomenon that needs more study and further investigations.

In order to treat the acute pulpal pain of the emergency patient, there are different methods and medicaments in the clinical practice. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of variant treatment methods and medicaments used clinically to manage acute pulpal pain. The material of this method consisted of 100 patients who came in the clinic of endodontics of Athens university, with symptoms of acute pulpitis. The patients were divided in three groups. In the first group the carious dentin was excavated without exposuring the pulp and a cotton pellet with eugenol or comphorted p-chlorophenol was placed in the cavity. In the second group the carious dentin was also removed, a small pulp lesion was made and the same medicaments were placed in the cavity. In the third group pulpotomy was performed and the same drugs were placed in the cavity. The results indicated that the method of pulpotomy was the most effective one for pain alleviation. Furthermore eugenol was proved to be more effective as a sedative drug than comphorted p-monochlorophenol.

Auriculotemporal syndrome is characterized by flushing sweating and hypersensitivity in the temporal, parotid and preauricular area during mastication. The syndrome is a rare complication after 1) injuries in this area, 2) parotidectomy, 3) surgery of fractures of the temporomandibular articulation 4) neoplasms of the parotid gland. It usually appears a few days to 1-2 years after the appearance of the above mentioned causes. A case of auriculotemporal syndrome in a 70 year old man with metastatic Ca from the prostate to the cervical vertebrae and neck lymphnodes is reported. On this occasion, the literature is reviewed and emphasis is given in pathogenesis and treatment of the syndrome.

After surgical uncovering of the fixtures and abutment connection a preliminary impression of the entire ridge and surgical area is made. From the resultant cast an impression tray is fabricated for the final impression. At least 1 week should elapse after abutment connection before final impression is made. The presence of sutures and easily traumatized attached gingival tissues may complicate oral procedures. After the impressions have been made, jaw relationship has been recorded, casts have been mounted on an articulator, and tooth arrangements has been verified, a rigid metal framework is cast in gold or in silver-palladium alloy from a wax-acrylic pattern. The metal construction consists of at least 6 mm of vertical height and buccal-lingual width and sufficient rigidity of the cantileverded sections billaterally. The artificial dentition is then reassembled on the new frame in the predetermined position and examined in the mouth for confirmation of fit and appearance. The prostheses is then temporarily secured to the abutments using small gold screws for approximately 1 month as an adjustment period.

In this research we used 180 noncarious teeth, 15 from each kind, in which we cut the anatomic crown. After that we weighted the roots, each group separately, before and after the root canal obturation with the technique of lateral condensation of gutta percha and Grossman's sealer. The difference of the two weights represent the overload of the tooth after obturation. Then using mathematical rules we configured out the mean volume of the root canal of each group and the mean value of the diameter of the orifice of the canal of each group of teeth.
