The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of tillage implements on potato yield and water use efficiency. The study was conducted at a private farm at Al-Kharj Governorate, Saudi Arabia during 2015 in randomize complete block design with three replications. Three primary tillage implements commonly used in Saudi Arabia for seedbed preparation with different configurations: disk harrow, chisel plow and moldboard plow were used. The potato variety used was Spunta. Centre pivot system was used to provide irrigation water. The statistical analysis indicated that tillage implement had significant effect on yield and water use efficiency. The highest yield of 37.19 t/ha was observed during plowing with moldboard plow and the lowest (32.33 t/ha) was observed during plowing with disk harrow. The highest water use efficiency of 7.91 kg/m was observed during plowing with moldboard plow and the lowest (6.88 kg/m) was observed during plowing with disk harrow. The results could be helpful to develop comprehensive technology to increase potato yield and water use efficiency in semi-arid region like Saudi Arabia. The quality of the growing medium stands out as one of the most important factors affecting the success of annual plants, especially when grown in potted culture. Recently, we have suggested that growing medium gives not only a matrix for water and nutrient absorption but also a source of external signalling. The aim of this work was to assess the performance of six pansy ( Viola wittrockiana Gams.) genotypes grown in two growing media with significant differences in both physical and chemical properties, aiming to understand how substrate quality change the physiological mechanism related to biomass accumulation. The responses of the six pansy genotypes tested to the two growing media were significantly different. The mechanisms involved included fresh weight accumulation, leaf area expansion; RGR, RLA, glucose content and photo assimilate partitioning. On the other hand, RGR, RLA and glucose content were associated with root dry weight at the end of the experiments. Since the responses to the different growing media were the same as those found in plants grown with root restriction related to container volume, we speculated that cytokinins might act as endogenous signals.

Matured African catfish (Heterobranchus bidorsalis), size ranging from 1.40-2.00 kg average total body weight (TBW) and mean length 44.50 cm were procured from a private fish farm and transported in perforated 50 litre water holding capacity jerry can to the hatchery and maintained for 2 weeks. They were fed with 40% crude protein commercial diet with good water quality management before being used for breeding. Incision at variation length 2.50, 3.40 and 4.00 cm were made on the abdominal region (gonad position) of the male spawners after anaesthetic treatment using sterilized surgical instrument to extract milt to fertilize egg. The incised position was sutured using simple interrupted suture pattern with catgut chromic 2/0 stitch. The spent spawners after operation survived on gradual healing and recuperation within 14 days postsurgery. Fecundity, volume of milt extracted, percentage fertility and hatching differed significantly (P<0.05) among treatments. Treatment 3 (3.40 cm) was the most effective incision length that gave best results in term of percentage hatching (92.04), weight gain (28.37), specific growth rate (2.36) and Original Research Article Yisa et al.; AJEA, 10(2): 1-7, 2016; Article no.AJEA.20510 2 percentage survival (68.77±4.224) of the bred hatchlings as compared to other treatments. Two field experiments were carried out at Research Station, El-Sharkia Governorate, ARC, Egypt during 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 seasons to inv estigate the effect of relay intercropping cotton with some winter crops as compared with sequential solid plantings of these crops on the productivity, land equivalent ratio and net return of these systems. The split plot des ign with three replications was used. Two cotton cultivars were grown in the main plots , while cropping systems were allocated in sub plots as followed: relay intercropping cotton with faba bean and wheat at 20 March, faba bean and wheat were grown with two population densities. These treatments were compared with growing cotton after Egyptian clover each of 20 th March, 20 April and 20 May, as well as, faba bean at 20 th April and wheat at 20 th May in solid plantings. Intercropping cotton with faba bean and wheat cause d significant reductions in yields of these crops. The results showed that cotton cultivar Giza 86 had igher values of seed cotton yield than Giza 90. Intercropping cotton with faba bean at 20 th March gave higher values, also it had the same effects of cotton characters grown in sequential so lid plantings at 20 th April after faba bean and after Egyptian clover at 20 th March. Intercropping cotton with wheat at 20 th March had the same values of cotton characters of traditional culture. Late planting date of cotton (20 th May) as followed after Egyptian clover or wheat caused significant reducti ons in cotton characters as compared with those grown in the early date. Low plant densities of fab a bean or wheat decreased their effects on cotton characters under relay intercropping. Also, cotton cultivars and the interactions between cotton cultivars and cropping systems had insignificant effects on yield of preceding crops ( faba bean and wheat) while cropping systems had significant effects on yield of wheat and faba bean .
