Staff development departments expend resources on the provision of new product and equipment education. This "how to" article contains practical information that will assist both novice and experienced educators to develop creative and effective learning experiences for product education. This approach can prevent potential patient and/or staff harm or financial losses caused by misuse of new products by an uninformed staff.

The staff development faculty is a unique group of educators who are at the very core of processes in today's healthcare environment. Even so, little guidance is available for their professional development from novice to expert. The conceptual model presented in this article defines a developmental continuum for healthcare staff educators. The model serves as a comprehensive framework to guide staff development activities from initial orientation to educational opportunities that lead to the expert role.

In this article, the authors highlight the process by which one staff education department developed performance standards. These standards facilitate orientation of new educators, assist with the planning of developmental goals, and guide the evaluation process. This process can serve as a prototype for nurse educators faced with the challenge of developing performance standards.

Adults enter computer learning situations with diverse interests and backgrounds. They learn best when they can select from a variety of learning modalities with the goal of completing a desired task. Helping adults learn how to undo computer errors and identify support persons can be just as important as successful completion of a task on the first attempt. By applying these principles of adult education to computer learning, educators can facilitate competence and self-direction in learners.

A study was conducted of nurses in rural hospitals to determine their knowledge of and educational needs regarding battered women. The results indicated that nurses had very low knowledge level regarding battered women. The vast majority had not studied this important issue either in nursing school or on the job and, as a result, wanted more staff development on the subject of battered women, with a focus on assessment and intervention with battered women.

This article examines a successful, innovative, and cost-effective approach to reviewing high-risk/low frequency skills for critical care units in an 800-bed healthcare system. Benner's (1984) Novice to Expert concept was used in the development of a performance-centered learning experience that encouraged critical thinking. "The Traveling Salvation Show" incorporated games, music, and brightly colored posters into a relaxed, flexible atmosphere to involve the learner in hands-on practice and review of high-risk/low frequency skills to meet Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations guidelines.

Videos are versatile, convenient, and effective learning tools. Health educators, whether in staff development or nursing education programs, are confronted with increasing demands for current learning resources. To help meet escalating educational needs, educators can produce cost-effective videos by using their expertise and community resources. Institutionally produced videos are also marketable commodities and can be a source of revenue.
