In the surgical operation for oral region, local anesthetic agent added with epinephrine is usually given to the site to be operated in order to obtain better hemostatic effect even under general anesthesia. However, there have been relatively few reports, which describe the circulatory changes after the injection into oral region, the fluctuation of plasma catecholamine concentration and the concentration of local anesthetic agent in plasma. In the present study, 1% lidocaine or distilled water added with 10 micrograms/ml epinephrine was locally injected at 0.5 ml/kg into the palatal submucosa of Wistar rat under anesthesia with 1% enflurane. With the increase of heart rate and arterial pressure, the catecholamine concentration in arterial blood was determined when heart rate reached the peak value. Further, in the 1% lidocaine group added with 10 micrograms/ml epinephrine, lidocaine concentration was measured under three different conditions of normoventilation, hypoventilation and hyperventilation. Also, for the normoventilation group under 1% enflurane anesthesia, the epinephrine concentration when several events of ventricular arrhythmia occurred and the lidocaine concentration required until the arrhythmia disappeared were measured. The results were as follows: 1. In the case of lidocaine group added with 10 micrograms/ml epinephrine, heart rate and arterial pressure showed less increase than the case of distilled water with 10 micrograms/ml epinephrine, and the time to the peak value of heart rate was shorter. 2. The concentration of plasma epinephrine when heart rate reached the peak value significantly increased compared with the control in both 1% lidocaine group added with 10 micrograms/ml epinephrine, and the distilled water group added with 10 micrograms/ml epinephrine, whereas the increase was more conspicuous in the former than the latter. The concentration of plasma epinephrine at the occurrence of ventricular arrhythmia was by about 2.3 times as much as that of 1% lidocaine group added with 10 micrograms/ml epinephrine when heart rate reached the peak value and by about 5.8 times as much as that of the distilled water group added with 10 micrograms/ml epinephrine. The correlation between plasma epinephrine concentration and the increase of heart rate was noted only in the distilled water group added with 10 micrograms/ml epinephrine. 3. The concentration of plasma norepinephrine when heart rate reached the peak value significantly increased compared with the control only in the distilled water group added with 10 micrograms/ml epinephrine. 4. The concentration of plasma lidocaine when heart rate reached the peak value was about 1/4 of the concentration required for protection against epinephrine-induced ventricular arrhythmia.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

In order to clear the relation between cell activity and morphology of their microvilli (MV), osteogenic MC3T3E-1 cells were cultured on plastic cover slips. Those cells have the capacity to differentiate into osteoblasts and mineralize in vitro. Histochemically, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) positive cells appeared with ALP staining at 4 days, and they increased gradually day by day. However ALP activity advanced rapidly in the culture adding dexamethasone (Dex) into the medium from 6 to 12 days culture. In scanning electron microscopic study, MV were observed on the surface of irregularly-shaped spread cells from 4 to 12 days. At the early stage, MV showed like fine filaments. Concentration, width and length of MV increased gradually with cultivation. On day 12, the long MV with a few particles were observed to some degree. In the presence of Dex, concentration and length of MV were much better than in the absence of Dex. Furthermore MV with many particles were seen more frequently. These results demonstrate that development of MV have close connection with differentiation of the cells.

We studied a primary culture of oral epithelial cells from adult rabbit and reported about dose-dependent growth by Ca increase. Therefore, in the present study we examined the relationship between total Ca, or Ca ion concentration and the proliferation of oral epithelial cells. The results were as followings. 1. The optimal Ca concentration for the growth in primary culture of oral epithelial cells was affected by the serum concentration in the medium. But Ca ion concentration for the best growth was in 10-30 micrograms/ml (0.25-0.74 mM) regardless of the serum concentration. 2. The optimal Ca ion concentration was shifted to 3-20 micrograms/ml (0.075-0.5 mM) in the medium containing chelated serum. This fact, suggests that the chelated serum may play different action from whole serum. 3. The optimal Ca ion concentration in the present study was higher density region than Hennings's view (0.04-0.1 mM) and it was lower than that of Tong (1.4-2.8 mM). Our data coincided with that of Wille (0.18-0.36 mM) who used MCDB 153 medium.

Konan-town in Fukushima-pref. has high-level decay of deciduous teeth of the young. The individual level (guardians of the young), the professional level (the medicalcare and the administration), and the dental health activities level (the systematist and the residents of the district) all together have practiced dental health activities by "Shiroi-ha Kyoshitsu" for 73 one-year-old infants starting in 1986 for three years. This report is based on the results of the activities which have been conducted for the first 18 months. "Shiroi-ha Kyoshitsu" has practiced activities such as surveys on oral hygiene practice, teaching how to chose snacks and mouth cleaning and dental examination. The information on improving dental hygiene was given to the district level to stress the importance of good dental practices. In the study group, the rate of high-level caries increased from 2.4% to 58.6% (over 18 month period); however, it decreased to 4.6% if we compared with the rate among the comparative group of infants (at the age of 2 to 4 as of 1985) when they were 18 months old. The rate of B or C type caries is 3.2% which was only a half of what it was before. On the other hand, when using the dmft index for the study group of infants, the rate of the dmf index changed from 0.05 teeth (at date started) to 2.45 teeth (over an 18 month period).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The finite Hankel transforms are applied to the linealized equations of motion for the pulsatile flow in an elastic circular tube. In this paper, the time dependency of the pressure is the known function which is represented by Fourier series expansion. The Fourier transforms are applied to the quantities of the axial components of the pressure and flow velocities, and the finite Hankel transforms are applied to the radial components of them. It is shown that the solutions of the flow velocities are adequate forms for computer calculation. Using the Fourier series coefficients given by the data of the pressure in time, we can calculate the flow pattern in the steady state.

Lipoma, well-circumscribed tumors of mature adipose tissue, are one of the commonest encountered benign neoplasms. In the oral cavity, lipomas almost always occur in the cheek, tongue, and floor, but rarely in the lips. In this paper a 73-year old woman with lipoma in the right lower lip and cases of lipoma in the oral regions that have been reported in Japan are discussed. Her past history was diabetes mellitus and the others had no abnormalities. The specimen was a spherical, encapsulated, soft, bright-yellowish mass measuring 1.5 x 1.0cm. Microscopically, the tumor consisted of matured adipose tissue histological diagnosis of the tumor was simple lipoma. Six months postoperatively there is no sign of recurrence.

We have experienced epithelial dysplasia and invasive carcinoma of oral cavity, showing punctation and mosaic like atypical vessels confirmed by usual photographing. Case 1: 42-year-old man. After resection of tongue leukoplakia, the punctation appeared in the distal region of resected wound. Pathological findings were epithelial dysplasia, and expansion of capillaries in the stromal papillae were close to the surface. Case 2: 55-year-old woman. Punctation and mosaic like atypical vessels were recognized in the buccal mucosa, extending from the gingival carcinoma. Pathological findings were epithelial dysplasia and carcinoma in situ in punctation, and early invasive carcinoma in mosaic. There were irregularly expanded capillaries in the stromal papillae being close to the surface at both mosaic and punctation area. Although punctation, atypical vessels and mosaic are the colposcopic findings of uterine cervical cancer, these findings may become diagnostic point of early oral cancer.

The effect of royal jelly on the growth, development, weight of a cocoon and the number of eggs of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, was tested by the use of artificial diets. The growth and developmental speed of the silkworm were quickened by addition of royal jelly. The number of eggs increased markedly by the feeding of raw royal jelly but not of boiled royal jelly.

Various properties of dental luting cement are influenced by powder/liquid ratio. The standard consistency of luting cement is determined in Japanese industrial standard and American dental association's specifications. However, it is not considered that a constant consistency is best for luting cement of all kinds. This study were performed on suitable consistency of individual cement with regard to bond strength and disintegration. Most suitable consistency was almost the same as standard consistency by the specification in the case of Zinc phosphate cement (GC's Elite cement 100). But, in the case of Polycarboxylate cement (Shofu's HY-Bond carbo cement) and Glass alkynoate cement (GC's Fuji ionomer Type I Liv), maximum bond strength can be obtained with a more powder/liquid ratio than standard consistency by the specification. Especially, Glass alkynoate cement shows this tendency strongly. Therefore, it must be manipulated quickly after mixing.
