Combination of the usual techniques yielded 70-80 p.c. pure apo- and iron-transferrin preparations, whose analysis revealed the presence of antigenically identical transferrin fractions differing from one another in respect of electrophoretic motility and sedimentation contrast. No similar modifications of transferrin have previously been reported.

A review of the enterotoxins of enteric bacteria was compiled, taking into account recent developments of the field as well as results of the author's own research work. After characterization of enterotoxins of different origin, their pathogenic role is described, with special attention to the genetic background of these agents. The possible use of enterotoxins for active immunization purposes is also discussed.

The participation of TG cells forming the suppressor T cell population and of histamine-binding cells was determined in the peripheral blood of patients with SLE. Former was considerably diminished in the active phase of the disease, latter was found diminished in both the active and the inactive phase. The results published in this paper support the functional disorder of suppressor T cells in SLE, an assumption based only on sporadic data before.

The author reviews: 1. the present status of plasma fractionation with respect to the starting material, the quantitative relations of fractionation, how much plasma is fractionated and which fractions are prepared in different parts of the world; 2. the techniques applied in preparation of albumin and plasma protein fractions, with special regard to the cold-ethanol procedures and the new tendencies in the preparation of albumin; 3. the history of the albumin producton in Hungary and 4. his own experiences in fractionation of haemolytic plasma and in fractionation combined with heat-denaturation. A simple two-step modification of the cold-ethanol fractionation is described.

Rabbit serum against crude MC-29 hepatoma extract does not contain anti-avian gs antibodies detectable by gel diffusion methods. Rabbit serum containing antibodies against purified gs 1, gs 2, gs 3 and gs 4 antigens of avian myeloblastosis virus reveals gs 1 antigen in MC-29 hepatoma extract.

Serum samples were taken serially from three nonimmunized sheep over a long period of time. Antibodies to human serum albumin (HSA), ovalbumin (OA) and FITC were separated from the samples. Than, two of the animals were injected with HSA+ complete Freund's adjuvant, the third with adjuvant without antigen. Serial postimmunization serum samples were subjected to the same procedures as the pre-immunization ones. The specific antibodies increased in concentration, and only the postimmunization antibody population was able to precipitate. In the presence of the antigen, the postimmunization antibodies bound to the Fc receptors of lymphocytes to an increased degree. There was no difference between pre- and postimmunizaton antibody populations either in complement-activating capacity or in the quantity of antigen necessary for reaching antigen-antibody equivalence. Isoelectro-focusing showed no new bands which would indicate antibodies different from the pre-existing ones. However, changes were observed in the relative participation of the antibodies forming different bands. No sharp limit was observed between pre- and postimmunization antibody populations. The Ig increment demonstrated after immunization was accompanied by a similar increment in the specific antibodies tested in the animal that had not given antigen, but not in the others. The authors attribute a role to humoral antibodies already in the earliest phase of immune response.

A determining time factor in the course of sterilization in autoclaves is the time required for killing microorganisms. Damaging of microorganisms takes its course as an exponential function of time. Taking into account this fact, the parameters of sterilization are determined by the technical standards of the equipment used for autoclaving. The authors present the sterilization problems of infusion solutions, with special regard to the sterilization conditions of heat labile preparations. The results of experiments carried out with autoclaves of different technical standards are discussed.
