Structural blue coating based on glaze painting
Anne Goyer, A. Bensalah‐Ledoux, D. Carole, C. Luyer, T. Blanchard, I. Merdrignac, I. Guibard, A. Pillonnet
An art/science collaboration has enabled a contemporary artist to re-discover an age-old technique used by glaze-masters such as Leonardo da Vinci. The process uses dark bitumen, white mineral particles, a brush, and knowledge of drying and laying time to produce intense, structural, blue hues that are mainly due to Rayleigh light scattering. Although these blue hues are mentioned in ancient studio manuscripts, very few are found in actual easel painting masterpieces.

Ernst Haeckel’s Radiolarians and Medusa: The influence of his visits to Villefranche on his science and his art
J. Dolan
Early in his long career, Ernst Haeckel (1834 - 1919) twice visited Villefranche-sur-Mer. First, as a student, in 1856 during a sampling trip to Nice, and again in 1864 when sent to Nice by his parents for a change of scenery following the untimely death of his first wife. The two visits appear to have been key events in the development of Haeckel's science and art as they are the beginnings of his studies, first on radiolarians, and then on medusa. During the 1856 visit he observed for the first time living radiolarians, the group of microscopic planktonic protists, the subject of his first monographic work in 1862 that brought him fame at a young age. During the 1864 visit he resided in Villefranche-sur-Mer. There, for the first time, he made detailed observations on the development and morphology of medusa. He subsequently produced monumental monographs on both radiolaria and medusa, e.g., the Challenger Reports, which remain today his major scientific contributions. Haeckel's artistic fame is largely from his Kunstformen der Natur. The book relies heavily on illustrations of both radiolarians and medusa, more so than other groups of organisms, and contains iconic images of medusa and radiolarians, suggesting a major importance in Haeckel's art for the two groups linked closely with Haeckel's visits to Villefranche-sur-Mer.

N. Sauve

Mathematical Infinity “in prospettiva” and Spaces of Possibilities “前景中的数学无限”和可能性空间
G. Longo
The Italian Renaissance painters invented the first symbolic form for the mathematical concept of ''actual'' infinity : the projective point of the perspective. This was the result of a long debate on infinity, in philosophy, since Aristotle, and in theology, during the Middle Age, and had a major fall out in this early geometrization of space. In particular, this invention set the grounds for the construction of the infinite spaces of all possible physical dynamics. In spite of the diversity of the theories in physics (Classical, Relativistic, Quantum … theories), an a priori ''phase space'', as a generalization of the infinite Newtonian space-time, is a core presupposition of each theoretical frame. The problem will be posed of the pertinence of this construction as for historical sciences, biology in particular, where the “space of all possible paths” (the list of all phenotypes and their phylogenetic history) cannot be pre-given.

Coalescence, un imaginaire scientifique
A. Darmon, Julie Simon
Coalescence.

J. Crettez

Conducting Archaeogaming & Protecting Digital Heritage: Does the Future for Archaeology Lie in The Immaterial
Benjamin Hanussek
Digital games have become considerable and influential cultural transmitters throughout the past years. As social sciences had grasped the importance of this medium as an object of study, the field of archaeology has increasingly taken notice of the digital leisure worlds of millions of players. Studying games as artefacts or archaeological sites have been therefore pioneering research programmes by scholars like Andrew Reinhard in order to test the boundaries of the archaeological framework, as also to generate important insight on our society by applying archaeological methodology on digital games. The aim of this paper is to discuss the possible role of archaeology in its conjunction with video games and tries to establish a critical perspective towards the enthusiastic first wave of the archaeology of video games.
