Ecumenism of Life.
Pub Date : 2015-09-21 DOI: 10.17688/NTR.V28I1.1178
Cpps Jeffrey Kirch
The Second Vatican Council ushered in a new age of ecumenism in the Christian Church. Ecumenism was a central focus both in several documents and in the practical experience of the Council. Half a century has passed since the conclusion of the Council and full, visible unity seems to be as remote as it was fifty years ago. Walter Kasper asserts that an ecumenism of life is necessary for the restoration of full unity in the Christian Church. This article argues that this ecumenism of life can be achieved in a threefold manner: fully implementing the teachings of Unitatis redintegratio, embodying the wisdom of the World Council of Church’s Lund Principle, and utilizing Karl Rahner and Heinrich Fries' arguments for doctrinal agreement.

Sharing Gaudium et Spes through Vocation of the Business Leader

The recent Spanish translation of Vocation of the Business Leader serves as a reminder of how little attention theologians have given to the earlier version of the document issued by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace nearly three years ago.  The fiftieth anniversary of Gaudium et Spes serves as an opportunity to examine the relationship between Gaudium et Spes and Vocation of the Business Leader in three ways. First, we will examine the way in which Gaudium et Spes’ s methodology of reading the signs of the times illuminates both the origins and structure of Vocation of the Business Leader . Second, we will evaluate Gaudium et Spes’ s advocacy of dialogue and its implications for engaging business leaders. Third, we will consider the contributions of the language of Gaudium et Spes to Vocation of the Business Leader, in relationship both to the latter’s title and to avoiding corporate scandal.

Hope Encounters: Consecrated Life for Our Times
Pub Date : 2015-09-21 DOI: 10.17688/NTR.V28I1.1185
Rscj Maria Cimperman
As a lens for considering the calls to consecrated life at this time, this essay opens up dimensions of both hope and encounter ( encuentro ), recognizing that encounter is a key marker of hope, and that the layers of encounter are important, with one layer in particular calling us at this time for our attentiveness and action. Hope is defined and four marks of hope are identified. Encounter is then developed and four layers of encounter are examined, with particular emphasis on the fourth and emerging layer of encounter. The essay closes with two specific invitations or calls to consecrated life for these times.

Bearing Witness to the Reign of God: Discipleship as a Religious Brother in the Church.
Pub Date : 2015-09-21 DOI: 10.17688/NTR.V28I1.1176
F. E. Miller
This essay is an exploration of and theological reflection on religious brothers in the church. Since the Second Vatican Council, the church has experienced a far greater decline in the number of religious brothers compared to the decline in the number of religious sisters and religious priests. Through the lens of discipleship, the essay opens up the call to bear witness to the reign of God through the vocation of brotherhood. Discipleship is defined and then brotherhood as a concrete expression of discipleship is examined in three ways: the author’s journey as a brother, a close-up of the all-brothers institute to which the author belongs, and a critical look at the current and future state of brothers in the church. The author expounds the constant binary of priests and sisters in the media and common church parlance. The essay closes with a specific challenge to elevate the visibility of brothers and to recover the prophetic nature of religious brotherhood.

Pastoral Engagement in the Mindfulness Movement: Gift, Opportunities, and Challenges
Pub Date : 2015-02-22 DOI: 10.17688/NTR.V27I2.1104
Thomas J. Bushlack
“Mindfulness” is a cultural buzz word these days.  Time Magazine ’s cover story for January 23, 2014, was titled, “The Mindful Revolution,” and the cover story of the most recent issue of Scientific American (Nov. 2014) is “Mind of the Meditator.” In this article the author suggests two ways in which Christians might engage this cultural phenomenon. First, Christians have something important to learn from this cultural movement. Second, Christians have something important to contribute to the mindfulness movement. Christians can gratefully acknowledge and learn from the hundreds of rigorous scientific studies conducted in the past decade that suggest ways that mindfulness practices may provide effective means of improving physical and mental health and connecting to a deeper sense of meaning and compassion in human life. However, Christians also have something essential to contribute to the cultural dialogue regarding mindfulness by drawing upon our own rich theological heritage of prayer and meditation. In the Christian tradition, mindfulness is a tool for cultivating a deeper awareness of and relationship with the Triune God revealed in the person of Jesus Christ and attested to by Scripture. The author concludes by noting that theologians and pastoral ministers have a responsibility to engage in our culture’s interest in mindfulness. The mindfulness movement presents an opportunity to educate baptized Christians and others and invite them into the rich tradition of contemplative prayer in the Christian tradition. Such contributions from the Christian tradition may also help to challenge the mindfulness movement to acknowledge the spiritual roots from which it has evolved. Such contributions may also help to overcome the risk of mindfulness becoming another passing fad or a middle- to-upper class commodity for supporting health and well-being. Christian contemplation teaches persons to embrace imperfection and suffering while remaining committed to the good of all persons and all creation in love. By sharing the fruits of the tradition through education and catechesis and by creating communities that support contemplative prayer, pastoral leaders and theologians may help persons to navigate the challenges of remaining committed to a life of prayer amidst the struggles and sufferings of life in contemporary, late modern cultures.
