Instead of encouraging librarians to focus only on collaboration between themselves and academic staff, this text discusses how the liaison librarian can and should work towards building similar long-term ‘personal’ relationships with individual students over the entire period of a student’s degree programme. Such relationships are intended to provide students with the confidence and ability to seek for information independently and should also provide them with an ongoing and approachable means of support. The chapters of this collection are arranged in a logical order and serve to scaffold the concepts covered in an extremely well-organised and clear manner. Context and background are provided in earlier chapters, as well as detail on the development and case studies of implementation of the personal librarian concept. Further chapters discuss how it relates to information literacy, embedded librarianship and the academic library environment. Later chapters incorporate a ‘real-world’ perspective in that they provide relevant insight from businesses and other academic service areas and cleverly include a ‘faculty perspective’ on the personal librarian. Overall I found this book to be clever and insightful. I would recommend this text, particularly the checklist and best practice chapters, to academic librarians and any other librarians.

information literacy has been taught, practised and studied in limited ways within an institutional framework that does not permit scrutiny of cognitive authority. Understanding the contexts within which people experience information is part of the theory of applied practice that recognises the fundamentally dialogic and political nature of knowledge formation. The author’s view embraces the information landscape as involving libraries, schools, community organisations, activist groups, businesses, classrooms, workplaces, family, media, social networks and many more informal elements, including social and political elements, which communicate and are responsible for knowledge formation. The perspective regarding ‘information landscapes’ is exploratory rather than evaluative, with even libraries coming in for critical evaluation because they demonstrate limited philosophies of knowledge formation. Controversially, the author claims that the concept of radical information landscapes involves an independence from technology. He claims that information and communication technologies, rather than facilitating autonomous learning, may be more accurately identified as an element allowing the informed in society to maintain their capital. The author recognises rapid technological change but holds the view that its value lies in stimulating learning needs, which, in turn, need to be met. High value is also placed on artifacts as an essential part of information; these include practical knowledge, insights, experience, emotional impact, observations, dialogue, technology access and other experiential factors. Factoring in time is also examined, postulating that every epoch is characterised by its singular view of legitimate information and knowledge. Each chapter begins with an abstract and a list of key words with in-text referencing throughout. At the end there is a very lengthy bibliography followed by a detailed index. For readers who have an interest in the theory of information behaviour and are stimulated by challenges to accepted academic frameworks, this is an expansive and rigorous interrogation of the field.

Higgins’ is concise yet covers a wealth of useful information, including a nod to film critics and film magazines to keep up to date – and sample records. The cost of the book is steep for an individual, especially given that it is in soft covers. However, for a library studies collection or a technical services department dealing with cataloguing and collecting film and video, the book is highly recommended.

Here is the third volume in the Chandos Series on Learning and Teaching. The spotlight this time is on student feedback in higher education in the medical and health sciences field. It draws upon international perspectives, current trends and issues and the challenges among university providers to attract and retain students. Five case studies illustrate the various approaches adopted in seeking feedback. The international perspectives (Australia, Hong Kong, Colombo, Thailand and India) reveal important differences due to cultural factors which influence the kind of feedback sought and received. Although the merit of collecting feedback was first proposed in the 1920s, it wasn’t until the early 1990s that it gained momentum, when educational institutions started to develop sets of instruments to measure student feedback and use it as a means to review and improve previous processes. Indeed, feedback is an essential element of quality control that is widely applied at all levels of education. It is a two-way process ‘that encourages not only active provision, but also active reception’ (p. 45). The contributing authors describe the cycle by which information is extrapolated by means of assessments, questionnaires, focus groups, comments, consultations and exit interviews, which may later be incorporated into the curriculum. The quality of the data collection is based on a set of attributes built into the methodology. The authors emphasise that it must be timely, explicit, confidential, credible, dependable and trustworthy. Developing feedback instruments is highly context dependent. One size does not fit all. Several authors explain that in certain cultures it may be difficult to obtain honest student disclosure, where respect for elders and educators in general is the norm. Likewise, some teachers may not be amenable to receiving evaluation of their teaching practices. Therefore, the importance of introducing feedback as a concept geared towards quality control for all participants is imperative. Ultimately, feedback is about establishing efficient and reliable relationships among various partners who operate in a network of connections. It can be likened to the closing of a loop, but a loop that is forever in motion, constantly monitoring and scanning the environment. In higher education, feedback is meant to provide students with sufficient information on their performance in specific relevant activities, so it guides their future performance in similar activities. The philosophy behind this latest volume is one of a shift in culture of the learning environment to one in which students are actively encouraged to engage in the feedback process. For this reason, it is highly recommended for both students and researchers studying aspects of learning and teaching in the medical and health sciences field.

brings much of value to all those who participate. But consortia do not always succeed for many and varied reasons. So, how do we ensure these valuable arrangements are successful and will continue to be so into the future? Editors Horton and Pronevitz, who have also written some of the content, have over 35 years of managing five different library consortia between them. Thus they bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to Library Consortia: Model for Collaboration and Sustainability in their effort to help libraries create, maintain or rejuvenate existing consortia so that they benefit all those involved for the long term. The book is divided into two parts, the first giving an overview of library consortia, the current landscape, managing consortia and ending with a chapter each on consortial arrangements for e-resources and physical resources. These chapters are written by the editors, with two co-written with other authors. Each of these chapters also includes a short list of quality references for further exploration of the topic. The second part is dedicated to case studies of selected consortia, written by staff involved in them, as well as case studies on particular types of consortia that cover inter-consortial licensing and local history digital initiatives. The book is very US-centric, as the survey and case studies are based on US consortia and references are to the US legal requirements for library consortia. The narrower focus is only a small detraction from the content, however, as most of the information, from management practices to online training to cataloguing to discovery tools, either applies, or is easily translatable, to the Australasian library environment. Australian libraries are already heavily involved in local consortia and, in times of tightening budgets, are finding them of more value than ever before. With good foundational information and excellent illustrative examples of consortia from which to learn, librarians will find Library Consortia: Model for Collaboration and Sustainability a valuable tool in achieving and sustaining library cooperation.

The book is divided into two parts, the first giving an overview of library consortia, the current landscape, managing consortia and ending with a chapter each on consortial arrangements for e-resources and physical resources. These chapters are written by the editors, with two co-written with other authors. Each of these chapters also includes a short list of quality references for further exploration of the topic. The second part is dedicated to case studies of selected consortia, written by staff involved in them, as well as case studies on particular types of consortia that cover inter-consortial licensing and local history digital initiatives. The book is very US-centric, as the survey and case studies are based on US consortia and references are to the US legal requirements for library consortia. The narrower focus is only a small detraction from the content, however, as most of the information, from management practices to online training to cataloguing to discovery tools, either applies, or is easily translatable, to the Australasian library environment. Australian libraries are already heavily involved in local consortia and, in times of tightening budgets, are finding them of more value than ever before. With good foundational information and excellent illustrative examples of consortia from which to learn, librarians will find Library Consortia: Model for Collaboration and Sustainability a valuable tool in achieving and sustaining library cooperation.","PeriodicalId":82953,"journal":{"name":"The Australian library journal","volume":"64 1","pages":"351 - 352"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/00049670.2015.1100278","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"58717852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
