Objective: To develop and validate syringe threat and injury correlates (STIC) score to measure police vulnerability to needlestick injury (NSI).

Methods: Tijuana police officers (N = 1788) received NSI training (2015 to 2016). STIC score incorporates five self-reported behaviors: syringe confiscation, transportation, breaking, discarding, and arrest for syringe possession. Multivariable logistic regression was used to evaluate the association between STIC score and recent NSI.

Results: Twenty-three (1.5%) officers reported NSI; higher among women than men (3.8% vs 1.2%; P = 0.007). STIC variables had high internal consistency, a distribution of 4.0, a mode of 1.0, a mean (sd) of 2.0 (0.8), and a median (interquartile range [IQR]) of 2.0 (1.2 to 2.6). STIC was associated with recent NSI; odds of NSI being 2.4 times higher for each point increase (P-value <0.0001).

Conclusions: STIC score is a novel tool for assessing NSI risk and prevention program success among police.

mean, variability and deviation), whilst the third part deals with the less familiar skills of visual presentation of statistical data for which R is particularly valuable. it is this section which makes the book one for the experienced statistician as well as for students. Although designed as a textbook for students and practitioners and employing natural language, much hands-on practice would seem to be essential in order to become familiarised with theory and application. An attempt has been made to include library-based examples of the uses of statistics which are not U.S.-centric (which the ‘References’ are). one illustration (p. 6) is of an english Post office Savings Bank deposit book from 1939 (incorrectly captioned 1869), and a University of Adelaide survey which included students’ smoking habits is used to illustrate the use of the MASS package to create a ‘data.frame’ (pp. 230, 231). on the other hand one wonders at the identity of the U.S. ‘Librarian [sic] Association’ whose survey is mentioned (p. 143). Three appendices have been provided: ‘A’ consists of a very useful collection of statistical formulae; ‘B’ presents a Z score table; and ‘C’ gives a handy set of R commands. This book is not as daunting as it first appears, especially if used as a practical guide to contemporaneous use of the software. its chief value for students and practitioners lay in the detailed coverage of the topic, the visual examples of formulae, and especially the final section illustrating in colour (a bewildering 655 are available) the graphical presentation of data.

rDA element set. each element is described using the rDA definition, scope note, core element information and basic instructions. The guide begins by introducing rDA and its fundamental concepts and vocabulary. The book is then divided into four sections – elements, guidelines, constructing access points and other additional instructions. The format is easy to follow, although readers will need to copy links in this printed work into their browsers in order to access related material listed in this book. The format is easy to follow and the examples provided are useful in assisting cataloguers to make decisions in creating rDA records. What the guide does not provide are coding instructions such as MArC or other encoding standards, and it does not cover some categories such as exceptions for early printed works and full access points for some types of material such as musical works, legal works and religious works. readers requiring more specialised content would need to look elsewhere. There is a comprehensive index which is useful in finding where to look within this guide, and the useful contents page provides a structured way of finding content within the book’s 32 chapters. The author, Thomas brenndorfer, has a cataloguing background and has been giving presentations introducing Fbbr and rDA concepts to cataloguers in Canada for a number of years. his style is easy to understand although the work does assume some prior cataloguing knowledge and ability. This book is a useful day-to-day reference for cataloguers and students, especially those in smaller libraries that do not need the full rDA or for those requiring a summary of rDA to use. it is a useful tool as a student textbook, and would be even more useful to rDA users as an online resource with an ability to link directly to related information and be kept up-to-date in this evolving area.

Limited materials budgets, finite shelf space and keeping pace with changes in the way information is published and accessed are common themes amongst libraries everywhere, and shared collection programmes are increasingly becoming recognised as a viable response. Therefore, despite the fact that these case studies only discuss programmes implemented in the United States by mainly research libraries, they should still pique the interest of librarians from outside North America and those who work in public or academic libraries. overall, Shared Collections is an insightful and useful book that, for as long as it retains its currency, deserves to be on the reading list of those who are currently involved in, or who are about to embark on, a shared collection programme.

Abstract This article aims to stimulate discussion about whether the current structure of postgraduate library education, largely unchanged for over 60 years, is still the best option, given the ways in which professional library positions increasingly require specialised knowledge and skills. Comparative cases from selected New Zealand professions, including medicine, law, teaching and accounting, are used to identify common characteristics of practice-based professional education, including education for specialisations which typically follow the basic degree. The article suggests that trends affecting library work create an opportunity to consider alternative models, including undergraduate education and advanced specialised qualifications.
