Toxoplasmosis, an infection caused by Toxoplasma gondii, is widely distributed worldwide. Seroprevalence in pets is a reliable tool to determine environmental parasite presence and human risk of infection due to proximity to these animals. In this context, the frequency of anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies in sera of dogs and cats from Espirito Santo, Brazil and risk factors associated with the infection (sex, age, allocation, and breed) were assessed. Antibodies against T. gondii were detected in 39.4% (149/378) and 38.1% (142/373) of the dogs by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and by indirect immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT), respectively. In cats, antibodies were detected in 15.2% (12/79) by ELISA and 7.6% (6/79) by IFAT. Canine infection was associated with stray origin and older ages. Feline females showed a higher chance of infection. There was an agreement between techniques in the detection of antibodies in dogs (k = 0.82) and cats (k = 0.63). These results indicate the parasite presence in the urban environment, suggesting the possibility of infection to humans and other animals. However, this risk is lower while considering pet domiciled animals with a more controlled diet and better hygiene conditions.

To achieve success in stray animals’ population control strategies, alternative methods to surgical castration, which reaches a greater number of animals, have been studied. However, considering females, it is necessary to know adequate volumes of chemosterilizer to be injected into the ovary and biological factors that influence ovarian volumetry. This study aims to determine the volume of 20% calcium chloride solution diluted in 95% ethanol to inject into the ovary of bitches and queens. Furthermore, correlations between ovarian measures (length [L], width [W], height [H], and volume) and body mass, age, and the volume of injected chemosterilizer were analyzed. For this, 64 ovaries, collected after elective ovariohysterectomy, received an injection of the solution. Ovarian measures were performed pre-injection and post-injection, and volume was calculated using Lambert's empirical formula, the formula for an ellipsoid, and the formula for spherical prolate. The mean ± standard error of the chemosterilant volume injected in the ovary was 0.09 ± 0.02 mL for bitches and 0.10 ± 0.02 mL for queens; ovaries’ width obtained a strong correlation with the injected volume; age showed a correlation to chemosterilant volume for both species and ovarian volume of queens; and body mass showed a correlation to ovarian measurements, ovarian volume e injected volume for bitches. Lambert's empirical formula and ellipsoid formula were more reliable for this assessment and respectively demonstrate an increase of 33% and 24% in ovarian volume in bitches post-injection; and 27% and 22% in queens post-injection.

The genus Polygonum exhibits a variety of biological and therapeutic properties. The goal of this study was to determine the in vitro anthelmintic activity of Polygonum acre extracts against the nematode Haemonchus contortus, characterizing the phenolic profile of these extracts. Aerial parts of P. acre were subjected to hot aqueous and hydroethanolic extractions obtaining EHW-PA (aqueous) and ETOH-P, (hydroethanolic), respectively. The phenolic content of the extracts was analyzed by using high-performance liquid chromatography with electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS) and colorimetric assays. The egg hatch test (EHT) and larval migration test (LMT) were used for anthelmintic activity assays. For comparison, chlorogenic acid and rutin were selected for the EHT. The HPLC-ESI-MS/MS analysis revealed the presence of isoquercitrin, myricitrin, quercetin, rosmarinic acid, rutin, and taxifolin in both extracts. EHW-PA and ETOH-PA showed an egg hatch inhibitory effect. EHW-PA had an IC50 of 442.24 µg/mL on the EHT, which was statistically lower (P ≤ 0.05) than ETOH-PA (IC50 = 703.60 µg/mL). Chlorogenic acid had an IC50 of 8.66 µg/mL. Rutin presented no effect over parasite eggs. EHW-PA and ETOH-PA did not show any larvicidal effect. Even though, there is a need of new tests, this study has determined the possibility to develop biofriendly compounds based on Polygonum spp. constituents against H. contortus.

This article presents a review of critical points related to the production of foie gras, based on technical-scientific references, regarding the impacts of this type of production on the quality of life of the birds involved. As a subsidy to an analysis on the legitimacy of the activities related to the production and commercialization of foie gras in Brazil, specificities of the Brazilian legal system were considered, as well as problems in the field of animal ethics about exploitation activities that involve animal suffering. In this sense, an exploratory research was conducted on the details and legislation relevant to the production of foie gras from the survey of relevant publications on the subject in scientific articles, books and digital news portals in recent decades. The results of this research led to the categorization of the endorsement of foie gras production as an indefensible practice, for implying evident risks and damage to health, resulting in a low degree of welfare and absence of minimum conditions that allow a good quality of life for the birds. And, due to the identification of the raising of birds for the production of foie gras as incompatible with national standards and basic principles protecting animal dignity, this article concludes that this practice is unsustainable.
