Urban migration for work creates problems both for migrant workers themselves and for the governments that must integrate new populations. The three articles in the present issue of Chinese Sociology and Anthropology examine possible means of integration of migrants into community life, the socially isolated experience of migrant life, and the characteristics of migrants who settle permanently.

From the community life perspective, this article argues that the segmentation feature of new urban migrants in contemporary China has set back their integration as well as current community construction. The making of interests-based communities to embrace new migrants instead of settlement-based communities may accelerate their inclusion and promote community building.

Multiple linear regression model based on the survey of new migrants in Guangzhou, Dongguan, Zhengzhou, Shenyang, Hangzhou and Chengdu in China showed that gender, education, period of living in the city, having children or not, place of origin, and human relationships are among the key factors influencing the willingness of the labor migrants to settle down.

Viewed against the backdrop of cities in the old industrial base in the northeast and taking a cultural approach, this article is an examination of the issue of migrants immersed in Shenyang from a social perspective and also an individual perspective. The proposal is that the fundamental issue of life is the search for its meaning. Helping migrants to construct and solidify the existential foundation of their lives within the framework of unfamiliar cities which are not their hometowns, so that their spirits have a place to rest, their concerns are addressed, their hearts are at peace, their souls are tranquil, they have a place to live and develop, and they obtain spiritual satisfaction, is the final destination in resolving the issue of the integration of migrants.

An analytical review of the changes and adjustments made to migration policies in Guangdong province in the three decades since reform and opening up uses the region's economic development as its main thread and social policy combined with economic changes as its analytical perspective. The thirty-year period divides into three stages reflecting the main phases of Guangdong province's regional economic development. Policies in the three stages evolve from control and guidance of random migrations, through attempts at orderly management of migrant populations, to overall planning of migrant population management. The policy adjustments have affected the relationship between migrants and the general public in the places of migration, as illustrated by changing portrayals of migrants in the Guangzhou Daily. Guangdong is a forerunner in China's reform and opening up, and the adjustments in Guangdong's population policies offer useful reference points for other Chinese regions.

Urban migration for work creates problems both for migrant workers themselves and for the governments that must integrate new populations. The four articles in the present issue of Chinese Sociology and Anthropology analyze regional policy, schooling, upward mobility, job switching, urban—rural differences, and housing for their effect on migrant workers and the communities associated with them, both past and present.

With a database based on 3,168 questionnaires collected from six Chinese cities: Guangzhou, Dongguan, Shenyang, Chengdu, Hangzhou, and Zhengzhou, this study examines housing conditions and determinants of new migrants in urban China. Quantitative analysis reveals that three types of Chinese new migrants—labor migrants, intellectual migrants, and entrepreneurial migrants—have different housing conditions. Marked disparities in housing facility quality among the six cities have also been identified. The housing conditions of new migrants are mainly determined by socioeconomic factors and by institutional factors such as hukou status. In addition, housing facility quality is primarily affected by hukou status, income, educational levels, marriage, age, and migrant type, but hukou is the major determinant.

The turnover of labor-intensive personnel in businesses is extremely frequent and is primarily manifested in "flowing back" and in "switching jobs." Field surveys and research have demonstrated that frequent and extensive job switching, as well as the rapid turnover of personnel, has had a significant impact on businesses. There are many reasons for migrant workers from the countryside to switch jobs, but young migrant workers from the countryside are more likely to switch jobs frequently. Irrational factors affect job switching, and these factors affect the careers of migrant workers from the countryside. Switching jobs has become a way for migrant workers in the new era to pursue self-realization as well as a way for them to express themselves and has ultimately become an action strategy for migrant workers from the countryside.
