ABSTRACT As formal jobs get more and more scarce while the number of potential workers continues to increase, the informal sector is increasingly becoming an important employer throughout Kenya. The crucial role the informal sector plays in the Kenyan economy was given formal recognition by the Government of Kenya in 1988 with the creation of the Ministry of Technical Training and Applied Technology to regulate this sector. However, despite this official recognition, very little has been done by the government to improve the welfare and working conditions of those involved in this sector. This paper offers a case study of the informal sector in Eldoret Manucipality in Kenya. In Eldoret this sector is vibrant and can be found in the busiest places of the Central Business District as well as in high density residential areas. The results of this study indicate a gendered division of the sector into two parts: namely, the production sector dominated by men and the service sector dominated by women. The centr...

Abstract Geography is one of the oldest forms of intellectual inquiry. There is little disagreement among professional geographers as to what the discipline is actually about. This agreement about this discipline, among its practitioners, has to some extent caused considerable reputation to those who are practicing the subject This however, does not mean that the subject is looked upon in a positive way by the public, with the result that most of those who wish to study the subject are unsure what they will do after graduation. This paper explores the roles of geography in a historical perspective. It examines the methodology of geography and the way it has evolved so as to give the subject a place of its own among other subjects. Geography's roles in various sectors and frontiers are examined. An attempt has been made to appeal to students, teachers and other practitioners who are concerned with preserving the public image of their subject as an academic discipline, as well as a field of applied research...

ABSTRACT A deteriorating urban environment is the enemy of sustainable development. Protecting the evnironment is not an alternative to economic growth—it is a precondition of efficent economic development (UN 1992:25). Solid waste management is one of the major environmental problems facing city municipalities today. In Kampala City, like other urban centers in Uganda, and in most other developing countries, this important service is based on the local government's centralized collection, transportation and disposal strategy. Currently this approach has proved to be inefficient due to the heavy financial requirements involved. There is an urgent need to provide for the safe disposal of the solid waste generated by urban residents and businesses. The increase in urban, economic and industrial activities, as well as the resultant population increase have led to an increase in the quantity of solid waste generated. Abstract What is the plight of Africa under the New World Order? The paper argues that the NWO poses severe economic problems for African nations. It offers two main practical solutions for these problems and plausible policy implications. The analysis concludes by acknowledging that structural adjustment programs as traditionally suggested by the International Monetary Fund and democratization of the polity will not guarantee economic prosperity for the continent.

AN ELECTORAL GEOGRAPHY OF UGANDA: FROM THE GUN TO THE BALLOT, A ‘POLITICS OF SUCCESS’ OR LEGITIMIZATION?

Abstract Most recent elections in African countries have been characterized by external persuasion by donor countries. The push for democracy has been tied to foreign aid. The election process in such cases often favors and/or legitimizes the incumbent. Uganda's 1996 election is a good case study to test this hypothesis, and explain the election within the global context. Uganda experienced political instability in the 1970s and 1980s. Since its independence in 1962, the country has been ruled by nine different governments, of which three were elected. Using the results from the recent presidential elections in Uganda, this paper examines the nature and implication of the elections. Did the election process uphold democracy, or peace? Did the process legitimize a rule? What factors influenced voting behavior patterns? The 1996 elections gave President Museveni a second term in office. His elected government is the ninth government, and legitimates the continuation of his non-elected first term of ten year...

Abstract Recognizing the importance of women and the role female education and autonomy plays in the reduction of infant mortality as well as fertility, this paper explores in greater depth the gender differences in schooling between boys and girls in Malawi. Specifically, the paper examines levels of gender inequality in schooling in Malawi and attempts to highlight some of the informal and formal factors that account for the observed differences in the Malawian context. Two main research questions are addressed: (a) What is the extent of the gender differentials in schooling and are there any discernible regional inequalities in female education and autonomy? (b) What are the main explanatory factors behind these differences? Using data from census publications and annual reports of the Ministry of Education in Malawi, the analysis reveals large gender differentials as well as regional disparities in educational attainment. The data show that educational attainment rates for all age groups are higher fo...
