Effectiveness of trancutaneous electrical nerve stimulationon improving hyposalivation in xerostomia patients with diabetes mellitus 经皮神经电刺激对改善口腔干燥症患者唾液分泌过少的效果

The aim of the study is to analyse the effectiveness of TENS [transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation] on improving hyposalivation in Xerostomia patients with diabetes mellitus. This was an experimental study with pre and post-test type. Sixty (60) Diabetes mellitus patients with hyposalivation condition were treated with TENS on their external surface of salivary glands and other corresponding buccal nerves. The duration of the treatment is for 15-20 minutes 1 session per day four sessions a week for 4 weeks. A simplified questionnaire is used as a screening tool and Sialometry method is used to analyze the saliva secretion. Saliva samples were collected from the subjects prior to TENS stimulation. The present study states that, the salivary secretion was increased after TENS application in continuous mode (p<0.001) and burst mode (p<0.001). It was illustrated when compared to saliva taken before therapy, particularly in xerostomic diabetes mellitus patients.Bangladesh J. Sci. Ind. Res. 59(1), 01-06, 2024

Cowpea seed nutrients: Impacts on nutritional quality and acceptability of bread 豇豆种子营养成分:对面包营养质量和可接受性的影响

White bread is a fermented, energy-dense food with minimal protein and certain macro and micronutrients required for important living functions. In this study, bread was fortified with roasted cowpea flour (RCF) in varied amounts (0-20%). The chemical compositions and sensory properties of RCF-supplemented bread samples were evaluated using conventional procedures. Proximate analysis results demonstrated that RCF addition greatly raised the crude fiber (1.78-2.32%), ash (3.08-3.46%), fat (4.58-5.35%), and crude protein (13.81-16.82%) of the bread samples, while carbohydrate content (71.3-66.84%) reduced significantly. Supplementing bread with RCF increased the mineral content (calcium, iron, phosphorus, and magnesium) of the final bread samples. The sensory assessment score demonstrated differences in general acceptability between sample B (5% RCF with 95% wheat flour) and the other bread samples. Thus, supplementing white bread with RCF resulted in bread with improved nutritional content, particularly protein, magnesium, and phosphorous, which are required for good health.Bangladesh J. Sci. Extrinsic properties of unsaturated polyester resin-based hybrid composite reinforced with waste-fibers versus waste-fibers and talc: A comparative study 用废纤维与废纤维和滑石粉增强的不饱和聚酯树脂基混合复合材料的外部特性:对比研究

This study demonstrates a comparative study on the mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties between waste-fibers/unsaturated polyester (WF/PE) and talc/waste-fibers/unsaturated polyester (T/WF/PE) hybrid composite. Here, reinforcing materials came from discarded coir doormats and jute sacks. The waste fibre was treated with NaOH and then embedded into the polyester matrix using a cold compression moulding technique. On the other hand, talc filler and waste-fibres reinforced polyester resin hybrid composite was developed using the same technique, and a comparative study was performed. WF/PE hybrid composite showed tensile and flexural strength of 36.67 MPa and 38.76 MPa respectively. Talc filler-filled T/WF/PE hybrid composite reported 23.95 MPa of tensile strength and 65.2 MPa of flexural strength. Average Leeb’s robust hardness (LRH) was found 495.667 and 524.75 for WF/PE and T/WF/PE respectively. T/WF/PE hybrid composite presented low-temperature thermal degradation compared to WNF/PE hybrid composite. Surface morphology studies showed that coagulation of fibres, voids, and fibre pullout at the inner interface of the composite was a common phenomenon for both composites. WF/PE composite showed higher electrical resistivity to applied voltage compared to T/WF/PE. This research explores the role of the Sri Lanka Army’s in enhancing food security within the country. Food security is a critical concern in Sri Lanka, influenced by factors such as climate change, agricultural practices, and societal dynamics. Leveraging their capabilities and resources, the Sri Lanka Army can significantly contribute to addressing these challenges. This study examines the potential contributions of the army in terms of food production, infrastructure development, technology adoption, and capacity building and development. Research design is a mixed-methods approach were used by a structured questionnaire targeting various stakeholders, including pertinent Sri Lanka Army personnel and conducted in-depth interviews with key stakeholders. The analysis underscores the importance of collaboration, knowledge transfer, and sustainable practices in achieving lasting food security. Through a comprehensive approach and collaborative efforts involving various stakeholders, including government bodies, local communities, and agricultural organizations, a more resilient and secure food system can be envisioned for Sri Lanka.Bangladesh J. Impact of polyvinyl alcohol for bio-adhesives preparation from tannery solid waste and its application in leather products industry 聚乙烯醇对利用制革固体废物制备生物粘合剂的影响及其在皮革制品业中的应用

In this study an attempt has been undertaken to utilize the solid wastes generated by the leather industry, particularly raw trimmings, for making bio-adhesive in a cost effective and sustainable way. To enhance the adhesion properties of prepared bio-adhesive, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with different ratios were incorporated. Here raw trimmings was hydrolyzed using calcium oxide (CaO) and yielded maximum gelatin of 38.67% at 75°C and 4.5 hrs. The properties of the prepared adhesives were assessed through the various parameters such as viscosity, ash content, pH, density, moisture content, shear strength and peel strength. Considering shear and peel strength test, bio-adhesive containing Gelatin-PVA ratio of 1:4 have shown characteristics features that can be used as temporary adhesive in different stages of leather products preparations. Brick sand particles as an adsorbent in column chromatography to remove heavy metals from solution 在柱层析中将砖砂颗粒作为吸附剂去除溶液中的重金属

The column chromatography method was used with brick sand particles as an adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals (Cr, Fe, and Pb) from the aqueous solution. These metals can pollute water, and soil and also come in contact with the food chain, causing life-threatening health issues in the human body. The pore volume and the specific surface area of the brick sand particles were determined using the standard method which was 44.41% and 29.4 m2/g respectively. The different concentrations of toxic metals in the water solution were considered to determine the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent. The adsorption methods were able to remove about 94% of Cr, 24% Pb, and 69% Fe from the aqueous solution. From the investigation results, we may conclude that raw brick sand particles can play a vital role as an adsorbent in the treatment of heavy metal-contaminated wastewater. Moreover, the saturated adsorbent can be used as an element of construction materials to prevent further pollution.Bangladesh J. Sci. Ind. Res. 59(1), 47-54, 2024

These metals can pollute water, and soil and also come in contact with the food chain, causing life-threatening health issues in the human body. The pore volume and the specific surface area of the brick sand particles were determined using the standard method which was 44.41% and 29.4 m2/g respectively. The different concentrations of toxic metals in the water solution were considered to determine the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent. The adsorption methods were able to remove about 94% of Cr, 24% Pb, and 69% Fe from the aqueous solution. From the investigation results, we may conclude that raw brick sand particles can play a vital role as an adsorbent in the treatment of heavy metal-contaminated wastewater. The Fe-rich deposits from Hakimpur (Bangladesh) are associated with a broad range of rock types including BIF, biotite schist, quartzite and amphibolite. Geochemical analysis coupled with petrographic studies indicates the BIF and BIF-hosted rocks were derived from sedimentary protoliths. In the sediments, clay minerals were altered at a certain thermobarometric condition during metamorphism: Clay (illite) → chlorite → biotite → amphibole, which is evident from silicification, chloritization, biotitization, saussuritization and epidotization in petrographic results. Monazite chemistry U-Th-Pb geochronological evidence indicates the deposit was affected by a single, medium-grade metamorphic event that occurred at 1728±28 Ma during the Basement rock’s magmatic event activated. The metamorphic alteration was took place by the hydrothermal action or orogenic activity due to magmatism of Palaeoproterozoic basement rock occurred surrounding the areas. The temperatures condition and oxygen fugacities obtained from zircon and coexisting magnetite and ilmenite assemblages [677–692°C and 522–809°C (at 10-23.9 to 10-11.9 fo2), respectively] are partly compatible with known crystallization conditions of the dioritic basement rock in Bangladesh. This study explored the biofertilizer capabilities of Rhizobium leguminosarum on two tropical vegetables, Talinum triangulare (waterleaf) and Telfairia occidentalis (pumpkin). The microorganisms were isolated, characterized, and inoculated onto activated charcoal carriers at varying concentrations for each vegetable, with controls using sterile activated charcoal and N.P.K fertilizer. After 28 days, growth indices including plant biomass, height, and mean leaf area were evaluated. Results showed significant growth improvements with Rhizobium leguminosarum, ranging from 107.77% to 286.78% for waterleaf and 166.52% to 358.26% for pumpkin, surpassing N.P.K fertilizer. Leaf areas also increased significantly, with Rhizobium-inoculated vegetables outperforming chemically fertilized ones. While the impact on plant height was relatively lower, this research highlights the potential of Rhizobium leguminosarum as a fertilizer for enhancing waterleaf and pumpkin growth. Ivermectin (IVM), a BCS Class II drug with weak water solubility, has minimal oral absorption and dissolution. This study aims to enhance the dissolution profile of IVM by performing solid dispersion methods using four hydrophilic polymers: Kollicoat IR, Kollidon 90F, poloxamer 407, and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC). The solid dispersion formulations (SDF) were made through physical mixing, solvent evaporation, and melt solvent/fusion. Using three ratios of IVM and hydrophilic carriers (1:1, 1:2, and 1:3), the cumulative release rate of IVM from formulations formed by physical mixing, solvent evaporation, and fusing was much larger than pure IVM (10%). IVM release rates from formulations including Poloxamer 407, Kollicoat IR, and HPMC polymers were 76% (fusion technique), 69% (physical mixing), and 47% (solvent evaporation method). The research demonstrated that fusion optimized drug solubility better than physical mixing and solvent evaporation. Herbal teas are widely consumed for their health benefits. In this study, the phenolic content and antioxidant capacity of six commercially available banaba (Lagerstroemia speciosa) and sambong (Blumea balsamifera) herbal teas were analyzed. The antioxidant activity was measured using DPPH and ABTS assays, with L. speciosa teas exhibiting higher activity than B. balsamifera teas. The phenolic content was determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu method and showed a direct correlation with antioxidant activity. The market prices based on unit phenolic content and antioxidant activity varied widely with different brands sold online indicating the need for better quality control of the teas analyzed.
