Summary Using Anthony Giddens' understanding of reflexivity, it is suggested that the development of the concept of theological reflection belongs in late modernity. Reflection is related to an understanding of reflexivity which is not solely personal, but also institutional and social. This insight is pursued through an exploration of Graham, Walton and Ward's book Theological Reflection: Methods, where Giddens' reflexivity can be found to relate to the methods explored. This is seen in three key areas: the different scales of social life; the process of bringing into consciousness; and tradition.

Summary This paper outlines the action-reflection method, Pastoral Theology as Attention, which is a tried and tested method that has been used in supervision and the teaching of pastoral theology in the Cambridge Theological Federation for the last eight years. The method roots the discipline of theological reflection within the practice of student ministers as part of their prayerful discernment of God's ways of working and their own roles. The steps of the method are outlined in this article using an example from the author's work with student ministers on an exchange to John Wesley College, Pretoria. In the process some general observations are made about the teaching of models of theological reflection.

Summary Jerry Springer—The Opera provoked a storm of criticism from Christians who were offended by its vulgarities and what were claimed to be its caricatures and ridicule of God the Father, Jesus and Mary. This paper argues that, contrary to popular Christian perception, this piece of musical theatre warrants appreciative study. The contentious burlesque portrayal of key characters is set in a broader cultural and historical perspective. Its theological aspects are often profound, although not wholly unproblematic. It is suggested that the production lifts the veil on ways in which Christian doctrine is received by the wider public and that it invites further reflection, particularly around issues of hell and eschatological exclusion.

Summary An article exploring how leadership of a parish church weekday Pram Service generated theological reflection on appropriate forms of behaviour for church leaders and congregations. Patterns of lay involvement are examined and lay initiatives are encouraged. Modes of leadership which encourage dependency are critiqued and an alternative model of the mutual interplay of dependence, independence and interdependence, rooted in Trinitarian theology, is offered. Ministerial outcomes are described.

Summary This paper seeks to reflect theologically on the lived experience of chronic illness and to bring to light the all too human struggles, feelings and challenges that are part of family and friendship relationships. The reflective experience may offer some valuable insights for the way in which the church undertakes its mission to care for the sick, the dying, the broken and the despairing.

Summary Faithful Cities makes specific reference to theological education and the training of clergy in particular. It pleads for the urban context of society to be central to that task because that is where most people actually live. It asks for the practical nature of theology to be the focus of training. That is admirable. There are, however, issues behind what appear to be relatively simple adjustments to training programmes that need attention if that aim is ever to be fulfilled. Three of these are: the nature of identity in British multiculturalism, the inability to engage in dialogue that ends in practical expression within the churches, and the apparent tussle between ‘academic’ theology and the business of getting on with loving one's neighbour.
