The (Roman) Catholic Church is a large and complex institution. Its members use the Bible in many different ways, and always have done. Here we can only be selective, and look simply at one particularly influential Catholic approach to the use of the Bible: the Spiritual Exercises of lgnatius Loyola. lt offers a method of praying the Bible oriented to the individual's spiritual growth, which nevertheless takes the text seriously. lgnatius' writing is hardly attractive. Here is what lgnatius offers for Christmas, in what is in fact one of his more expansive, lyrical passages:

Over the years I have given priority to the faith story undergirding the Christian faith when formulating an understanding of the Bible as pastor. Such an approach is confessional rather than apologetic in the sense that philosophical and behavioural science theories play a role, but they do not play the dominant role. Apologetic theology draws on the method of correlation, and it gives the Christian faith story an equal role with philosophy and the behavioural sciences. This is done to make sure that theology is formulated in categories and a language that speak to modern people. Confessional theological approaches, however, are not preoccupied with speaking to the contemporary world using the language of the contemporary world. Rather, confessional narrative approaches recognize that Scripture within Christian communities functions to bring meaning to the lives of people. For example, Scripture provides its own interpretation of reality as the text provides its own interpretive framework to faith communities. In fact, in the narrative approach to Scripture, persons are drawn into the biblical world; that is, the Scriptures enable contemporary people to frame their situations, and their circumstances in the same way that the original audience hearing the text framed similar concerns (EIIingsen 1990: 22-9). More precisely, people frame their lives in light of the plot that lay underneath Bible stories, and it is this plot that links our contemporary lives with the lives of those in the ancient past. Therefore, there is no need to impose modern-language categories on the text. In short, Scripture will provide its own categories and language for understanding our contemporary experience, and this language is plot language. The plot behind the stories in the Bible is the key to understanding how the Bible functions pastorally. Scripture frames contemporary meaning in faith communities through drawing people into the faith-oriented plot embodied in the story of salvation. More precisely, the eschatological plot undergirds the biblical story of salvation. In African American Pastoral Care I define the eschatological plot:

Opportunity and Conflict: Evidence-Based Practice and the Modernization of Healthcare Chaplaincy 机遇与冲突:循证实践与医疗牧师现代化

Summary The first part of this paper draws attention to the document Caring for the Spirit: A Strategy for the Chaplaincy and Spiritual Healthcare Workforce (2003), which concerns the development and modernization of Chaplaincy and Spiritual Healthcare in England. I outline its main themes and offer a short critique. The second part of the paper is a response to an article written by Chris Swift (Contact 144) which focused on the chaplain's professional identity and the need for theological re-engagement. I suggest that chaplaincy should positively embrace an evidence-based approach, placing it alongside theological re-engagement by seeing them as complementary. Here chaplains need to engage critically with an evidence-based culture through prioritizing a narrative and multi-professional approach to practice. Case studies, multi-disciplinary education and a prophetic approach are offered as supporting evidence.

The Cost of Floral Tributes 花的代价

Summary This article explores the contemporary phenomenon of purchasing floral tributes to decorate the coffin at a funeral. It locates the practice in the historical context of Victorian cemetery design, the importing of new species of flowers and the romanticizing of grief. Examples of highly personalized tributes are described and discussed in the light of changing attitudes to death. Moves from a medical to a cultural model for death discourse are interpreted in the light of consumerism and linked with Walter's narrative model of grief. Adopting a practical theological critique, I suggest that floral tributes reinforce romanticism through their consumerist pressure. The commercial pressure on mourners is discussed from a theological perspective and opportunities for pastoral carers to contribute to shaping the tributes and their meaning are identified.

Hybridity and Practical Theology: In Praise of Blurred Encounters 混杂与实践神学:对模糊相遇的赞美

Summary The article explores the growing significance of hybridity as a concept for describing the pastoral mission and practical identity of the church in the 21st century. The idea of hybridity emerges from the post-colonial and globalized urban societies in which we now live. The article synthesizes the literary theory of the leading exponent of this idea, Homi Bhabha, and his concept of the Third Space, with a post-liberal theology of the blurred encounter. The article ends with a reflection on the significance of a hybrid Christology in the construction of local and performative theologies. Hybridity is a concept which has ‘come of age’. It is a major theory that increasingly shapes the way we understand our cultural and political world and our sense of identity. Hybridity is emerging from the disciplines of cultural studies and anthropology and is beginning to cross over into theological discourses. It is by nature a complex and ambiguous concept, but one which practical theology ignores at its peril if it wants to connect with the major problematic emerging in the 21st century: our relationship with the Other in our midst and how we engage with diversity and plurality. In this article I shall explore some of the ‘prejudices’ against hybridity that a practical theology will have to overcome. I then outline its emergence as an indispensable category for interpreting post-modern and post-colonial society. I look briefly at some case studies of churches working with hybrid identities and methodologies within their local communities. I then reflect on how hybridity could become a major tool in the working out of practical theology.

Summary In this article I want to ask the question as to whether the conversation between Jesus and pastoral care today takes place between strangers or friends. To do this I look at three approaches: Jesus as example; some theological models; and the core values of Jesus. We end with a suggested outline reflection on a text.
