Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS), is a constitutional professional academic organization that confers Fellowship (FCPS) and Membership (MCPS) in various specialties in the field of medicine. As a part of evaluation system, BCPS is responsible for continued improvisation of quality assurance process of the Dissertations/Thesis out of a quality research of global standard. On the occasion of golden Jubilee celebration, an effort to document the gradual progression of the system of learning and performing a research and publishing the results by fellows is made through this article. A sub- committee of 6 members assigned by BCPS Journal committee in a group meeting decided to search BCPS library for dissertations and Thesis, dissertations and thesis database of Research and Training Monitoring Department (RTMD), college office for related documents and websites to collect data regarding evolution of thesis/dissertation of BCPS and other institutions at home and abroad. The purpose of this narrative is to describe the evolution of the Dissertation/ Thesis at the BCPS, Dhaka. Until January 2022, a total of 12,575 dissertations and 355 Thesis have been accepted by BCPS. Year wise distribution of outcomes of submitted dissertations from 2010-2022 and thesis submission rate in different specialties are promising. Over the last 50 years, there have been many revisions to the Dissertation submission and assessment guidelines. Funding for research, Mandatory training, training of the trainers, Specialty wise log-book and gradual introduction of regular monitoring of training and research, e-log book, thesis defense all are the few components of evolution of thesis/ dissertation over the years. BCPS council and Research and Training Monitoring Committee (RTMC) strongly believe that there is always room for improvement in the quality assurance process for the research work leading to Thesis submission. This will pave the way for research, publication of articles in renowned journals and collaborative works in future. J Bangladesh Coll Phys Surg 2022; 40: 46-50

Health professionals need competency in the assessment and outcome evaluation of several health behaviors related to NCDs and their risk factors. Assessment of the curricula in health professional education programs with respect to health promotion competencies is a compelling and potentially costeffective initial means of preventing and reversing the trend of non-communicable diseases. Learning evidence-based health promotion competencies within an inter-professional context would help students maximize the use of nonpharmacologic/ non-surgical approaches and the contribution of each member of the health team. This operational research study was initiated by Noncommunicable Disease Control Program (NCDC) of GOB to assess the readiness of the medical graduates to achieve the primary program objective “to reduce premature (40-69 years age group) death by 33% by the year 2030”. The program also wanted to review the existing undergraduate curriculum to determine the need for a change to achieve program objectives. The activity was delegated to Bangladesh College of Physicians & Surgeons (BCPS), to develop the recommendations for the NCD program. The study was designed as a cross-sectional mixed-method study adopting both quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative data were obtained from new graduates (12 medical colleges’ public & private) and older graduates from the existing public healthcare services. In-depth interviews (IDI), Key informant interviews (KII) & opinion gathering workshops were adopted to collect qualitative data. Senior medical teachers teaching NCD subjects were included in the qualitative process. Quantitative data were analyzed by using SPSS 20.0. Qualitative data was audio-recorded and transcribed by the anthropologist team. The curriculum review was done manually by using content analysis of the whole curriculum. The total number of respondents for the quantitative survey was 678, new graduates 348 (51%), older graduates 330 (49%). Among older graduates, 178 (54%) had no previous training, and 152 (46%) received some form of on-the-job training on NCDs by the program. The 12 IDI, 7 KII and 4 workshops participated by 88 senior teachers participated in recommendations development. The knowledge of 4 major NCDs, four major risk factors, PEN, and contribution of death from major NCDs was incorrect, suggesting a lack of conceptual and contextual understanding of the NCD prevention and control program. Qualitative investigation & opinion of the teachers suggested a lack of awareness of teachers regarding the control program, revealing a lack of communication and coordination between the program and academia, and the present curriculum is inadequate for NCD learning by the students. It can be concluded that the existing curriculum is inadequate in terms of program orientation and necessary skills to achieve the program objectives. Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS) is the pioneer in pertaining postgraduate medical education and training in this country since its establishment on 6th June 1972. With tremendous effort from the founder Fellows, the BCPS was able to hold the first post-graduate examination in July 1972. In 1972, examination started with FCPS part I, II and MCPS Exam with four subjects. After 50 years journey of BCPS up to January 2022, number of fellows are 7479 and subjects of fellowship is 59.We have searched different papers and electronic documents of examination department of BCPS including year book and found that BCPS went through various changes occurred in different aspects of examination systems including number of subjects. Introduction of OSPE, SBA, IOE and omission of viva are the epoch-making steps of BCPS. Punctuality is the beauty of BCPS. But, at the era of golden jubilee of BCPS, our realization is that our examination system yet not structured and standardized up to the mark.We hope, BCPS will make a new horizon by overcoming all obstacles in future. Bangladesh is one of the several countries which have successfully faced the challenge of recent Covid-19 pandemic. After the first emergence of the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 virus in China, it rapidly spread over the whole world. From the very beginning of the pandemic, Bangladesh government has taken all sorts of effective measures to save millions of lives. In the perspective of the Covid-19 situations in Bangladesh Armed Forces, AFIP Dhaka Cantonment has still been contributing very successfully to combat this situation. By December 2020, Covid-19 laboratories of AFIP performed 90,495 RT-PCR tests and 15,595 were found positive. Besides RT-PCR tests another very sensitive and rapid method named GeneXpert is being used to provide the Covid-19 test reports within 1 hour. By using this GeneXpert test system AFIP immensely helped the patients who require emergency treatment intervention, for dead bodies requires immediate religious rituals, personnel who needs urgent reports to go overseas and also for VIPs and VVIPs in situations of urgency. For the last 1 year during this pandemic, AFIP has been providing the Covid-19 diagnostic facilities with utmost accuracy and quality of the tests. It is the honour and pride of this renowned and prestigious institution to render its continuous service in the critical period of our nation. J Bangladesh Coll Phys Surg 2022; 40: 78-83

In Bangladesh, Government is trying to find a perfect health system that best serves its population. Here, we present the results of our study with aim to assess the opinion of various stakeholders about: what are the 1) high-priority areas, 2) moderate priority areas, and 3) low-priority areas to reform the health sectors for Bangladesh. We conducted a cross-sectional, exploratory and anonymous population-based e-survey from February to June, 2021 among individuals aged above 26 years. A semi-structured questionnaire was designed and incorporated into the Google survey tool (Google Forms) and a shareable link was generated and disseminated to physicians, Academicians/ Clinicians of Medical Colleges/ Universities, Health System administrators etc. Respondents were also given space to comment on each topic. Comments & reactions of all respondents were categorized into three main headings. These were 1) high-priority areas, 2) moderate priority areas, and 3) low-priority areas to reform the health sectors for Bangladesh. Out of 483 respondents, 476 respondents (80.5% males and 19.5% female) completed the entire survey. The mean age of respondents is 44.70 SD± 10.07 with age range 26-86 years. About 27% of the respondents were from faculties from medical colleges /medical universities and 1.7% were health system administrators. The high prioritized areas where the majority (>60%) of our respondents strongly agreed upon, for instance, good governance, structural referral system should be establishment, and reformation of existing health care procurement & purchasing policy. The moderate prioritized areas where 50 - 60% of our respondents strongly agreed upon, such as securing sustainable financing for health care, further development of existing health infrastructure, and establishment of Health Academy of planning and development (HAPD). The low prioritized areas where less than 50% of our respondents strongly agreed upon, such as decentralization and autonomous health system, public health-oriented infection prevention and control (IPC) program, and implement the national health insurance system (NHIS) under a separate authority etc. Good governance in health departments & health care provider organizations are essential elements for health sector reform. Health sector reform should be sustained, purposeful, planned and evidence-based and fundamental change addressing significant, strategic dimensions of health systems. Here, we present the results of our study with aim to assess the opinion of various stakeholders about: what are the 1) high-priority areas, 2) moderate priority areas, and 3) low-priority areas to reform the health sectors for Bangladesh. We conducted a cross-sectional, exploratory and anonymous population-based e-survey from February to June, 2021 among individuals aged above 26 years. A semi-structured questionnaire was designed and incorporated into the Google survey tool (Google Forms) and a shareable link was generated and disseminated to physicians, Academicians/ Clinicians of Medical Colleges/ Universities, Health System administrators etc. Respondents were also given space to comment on each topic. Comments & reactions of all respondents were categorized into three main headings. These were 1) high-priority areas, 2) moderate priority areas, and 3) low-priority areas to reform the health sectors for Bangladesh. Out of 483 respondents, 476 respondents (80.5% males and 19.5% female) completed the entire survey. The mean age of respondents is 44.70 SD± 10.07 with age range 26-86 years. About 27% of the respondents were from faculties from medical colleges /medical universities and 1.7% were health system administrators. The high prioritized areas where the majority (>60%) of our respondents strongly agreed upon, for instance, good governance, structural referral system should be establishment, and reformation of existing health care procurement & purchasing policy. The moderate prioritized areas where 50 - 60% of our respondents strongly agreed upon, such as securing sustainable financing for health care, further development of existing health infrastructure, and establishment of Health Academy of planning and development (HAPD). The low prioritized areas where less than 50% of our respondents strongly agreed upon, such as decentralization and autonomous health system, public health-oriented infection prevention and control (IPC) program, and implement the national health insurance system (NHIS) under a separate authority etc. Good governance in health departments & health care provider organizations are essential elements for health sector reform. Health sector reform should be sustained, purposeful, planned and evidence-based and fundamental change addressing significant, strategic dimensions of health systems.\u0000J Bangladesh Coll Phys Surg 2022; 40: 84-94","PeriodicalId":89579,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Bangladesh College of Physicians & Surgeons","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49310812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
