‘The Inheritance’ was the West End Theatre hit of 2018 and it tackles questions of history, responsibility and storytelling, the place – or the need – for visibility in our individual and community lives. Inspired by the power of this excellent theatre production, I offer my reflections on these themes in this paper.

In the UK, HIV disproportionately affects gay men. Even in the era of antiretroviral therapy (ART), social stigma surrounding HIV has persisted, generating adverse consequences for both prevention and care. First, the science and epidemiology of HIV among gay men are presented. Second, social representations theory and identity process theory are outlined as tools for exploring awareness, understanding and behaviour in relation to HIV. Third, some of the psychosocial challenges associated with HIV prevention and care are outlined and the potential coping strategies among gay men are discussed. Fourth, patient engagement with care and adherence to ART are considered in relation to psychosocial factors. Fifth, a model for enhancing HIV prevention and care is presented. It is argued that greater focus on psychosocial factors can enhance health outcomes among gay men living with, or at risk of, HIV.

The British Psychological Society’s Psychology of Sexualities Section held its 2017 Annual Conference on 8 December 2017 at the BPS London Offce, with the theme ‘Innovations in Psychology of Sexualities’. The programme featured six oral presentations, fve posters, four Pecha Kucha style presentations, and one keynote address. As a relative newcomer to the UK context with a background in LGBT psychology from a different country context (i.e. the Philippines; Manalastas & Torre, 2016), I participated in the conference for the first time with a mix of curiosity, excitement, and the standpoint of a ‘friendly outsider’ (Greenwood & Levin, 2007). As such, I aim to not just offer a summary of the conference but to ‘refect back’ (Greenwood & Levin, 2007, p.125) on the event as a whole.
