Microwave thermal therapy is one of the modalities for cancer treatment. One example is microwave hyperthermia which is a thermal therapy for carcinoma based on the decrease of the survival ratio of cancer cells by heating. In particular, we have been studying the intracavitary heating using the implanted biliary stent and a thin coaxial microwave probe combined with endoscope which is an effective and low-invasive treatment for deep-seated carcinoma such as a bile duct carcinoma. This paper describes the heating characteristics around the biliary stent by conducting both the heating experiments using muscle-equivalent phantom and the numerical simulations using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method.

Recently, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system which operates up to under 3 T is being used in clinical practice in Japan. In order to achieve the requirement of obtaining more high-quality images and short imaging time, devices utilize high magnetic field (>3 T) and high power electromagnetic (EM) wave pulses has been developed. The rise of the static magnetic field is proportional to the increase of the EM wave frequency which brings down issues of variation in capacitance used in the radio frequency (RF) coil for MRI system. In addition, increasing power causes problems of withstanding voltage and these approach leads to generation of non-uniform magnetic field inside the RF coil. Hence, if we can develop the birdcage coil for MRI system with no lumped circuit elements, it is extremely useful. In this paper, birdcage coil without the use of lumped circuit elements for 4 T MRI system was proposed and its magnetic field distribution was investigated. As a result, it was confirmed that the proposed birdcage coil has equivalent performances of the conventional birdcage coil which includes several capacitors.

An important aspect in the treatment of various chronic diseases is to optimise physical activity levels. We present a general approach for the implementation of an electronic Feedback Agent that serves as a personal coach for achieving and maintaining a healthy level of physical activity through sustainable behavioural change. The Feedback Agent is a self-learning, context aware, personalized software agent that runs on the user's Smartphone and uses an external inertial sensor to keep track of the user's level of physical activity throughout the day. We highlight the three important aspects of feedback in our framework: the timing, content and representation of given feedback messages. Tailoring and optimization of feedback timing and content is in an advanced stage of research, while the representation aspect is largely a matter of future work.

Procuring the location information using mobile radio systems is a popular topic amongst researchers. This paper investigates the impact of reference points density on performances of fingerprinting based GSM positioning system. The neural networks based model, was trained with a varying volume of the training set. Having in mind the accuracy and the time consumption for model generation, it was shown that, for optimal performances, the adjacent reference points ought to be 4m to 6m apart.

In this work a wide overview on the exploitation of MEMS technology (MicroElectroMechanical-Systems) for Radio Frequency (i.e. RF-MEMS) and telecommunication systems is provided. In the last 10-15 years MEMS technology proved to be a valuable solution for the realization of passive components for RF circuits, like variable capacitors (i.e. varactors), inductors, switches (i.e. micro-relays), as well as more complex networks, like RF filters, impedance matching tuners etc., with remarkable characteristics in terms of low-loss, high Q-factor (quality factor), and large reconfigurability. The integration within RF circuits and platforms, of passive lumped elements and networks with such prominent characteristics, would lead to a significant increase of performance and reconfigurability of the whole system (e.g. mobile handset, satellite, radar, and so on).

In many learning tasks, there are abundant unlabeled samples but the number of labeled training samples is limited, because labeling the samples requires the efforts of human annotators and expertise. There are three major techniques for labeling the samples: semi-supervised learning, transductive learning and active learning. Semi-supervised and transductive learning deal with methods for automated exploiting unlabeled samples in addition to improve learning performance. Active learning deals with methods that assume the learner has control over the whole input space. So combing the advantage of semi-supervised learning and active learning is a practical technique for improving the learning performance. In this paper, a general framework of combing (Active Learning) AL and (Semi-Supervised Learning) SSL algorithms is proposed. Then the ensemble learning for combing AL and SSL algorithms is introduced, which is denoted by ASC (AL and SSL by Committee). At last, the ensemble learning and confidence measure of the ASC is discussed.
ASC (AL and SSL by Committee)表示。最后讨论了ASC的集成学习和置信度度量。

Usually, for economic reasons, the physical infrastructure for transmission networks is designed as 2-connected graphs, i.e. interconnected rings. However, the increment of both, the traffic and the dependency of our professional and personal lives on ICT, demands more reliable transmission and distribution networks. Network interconnection problems are in general costly and complex to solve, categorized as NP-hard computational complexity. In addition, structural constraints such as 3-connectivity increase the time and resources utilized in the optimization search process. This paper presents and evaluates novel strategies in order to simplify the optimization process when planning the physical network interconnection as 3-connected with nodal degree 3. These strategies are applied in a case study and the results, using this and other approaches, are compared in terms of path distances, path length, network length, processing time, and number of iterations to find the solution.

In this paper we describe the application of different heuristics to optimise large communication networks. We use Iterated Local Search (ILS), Tabu Search (TS), Simulated Annealing (SA) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) to minimise the link cost to form balanced communication networks. This paper makes a comparison among the effectiveness of ILS, TS, SA and GA on solving large communication networks. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of these algorithms.

In this paper we describe the design and test of a wearable, multiband ring-antenna together with its rectifying circuit. The system is required to harvest RF energy from GSM 900, GSM 1800 and WiFi sources available in the ambient. A annular ring topology is selected for the antenna to be printed on textile and flexible substrates and is suitably modified with appropriate slots to cover the bands of interest. A multilayer configuration is exploited for wearable purposes and related integration issues are discussed. Due to the scarce amount of available energy, the primary goal in designing the antenna is to achieve high radiation efficiency and circular polarization in compact dimensions, compatible with technology garments. A rectenna is then designed by the concurrent use of harmonic-balance technique and electromagnetic simulation to predict the real rectified power in general operating conditions.
