A Tale of Two Movies: Protestants, Catholics, and Prior Censorship in Post–World War II Hollywood

Abstract:This study is a close examination of The Nun's Story (Fred Zinnemann, 1959) and The Sins of Rachel Cade (Gordon Douglas, 1961), two Warner Bros. productions adapted, respectively, from a Catholic- and a Protestant-themed bestseller. The novels' similarity in subject and setting is as striking as the differences in their manner of production. Utilizing archival research, this analysis reveals Production Code Administration negotiations with producers and religious officials to be a crucible of concerns about aesthetics, religion, and market access, while also highlighting religious principles and crucial differences in Catholic and Protestant approaches to movie regulation when the Production Code era was showing its first signs of decline.

The Manic Bodies of Danny Kaye
Pub Date : 2017-05-10 DOI: 10.1353/CJ.2017.0019
S. Cohan
I examine Danny Kaye's on-screen queer persona, arguing that his manic performance style gives historical specificity to his distinctive signification of gender and sexual ambiguities. Specifically, three signature elements constitute Kaye's performances in his 1940s musicals: the doubled identities, suggesting the closet; the association of Jewishness with Broadway sophistication and effeminate masculinity; and the popularity in this period of "Freudism" and fantasy. I then consider how that queer persona fared in the more conservative period of the 1950s, especially in the light of Kaye's identification as a children's entertainer.

Written Out of the Story: Issues of Television Authorship, Reception, and Ethnicity in NBC's "Marty" 写在故事之外:NBC《马蒂》中的电视作者、接受和种族问题
Pub Date : 2017-05-10 DOI: 10.1353/CJ.2017.0021

Abstract:This article investigates the 1953 NBC production "Marty" to challenge a long-held bias in television studies. By identifying television as either a "writers' medium" or a "producers' medium," scholars have underestimated the contributions of television directors. This has led to a perspective that emphasizes the narrative and commercial aspects of TV without sufficient regard for television programs' visual styles. Drawing on original interviews and archival resources (including fan letters that recover individual viewing experiences), this article argues that director Delbert Mann contributed to "Marty"'s artistry by linking the representation of Italian Americans with an aesthetic style associated with Italian neorealism.
