Investigation of material of British smut fungi held in the national collections at kew (k) undertaken during preparation of the new checklist of British and Irish Basidiomycota (Legon et al. 2005) identified several species not hitherto known from the British Isles. These include taxa not previously recognised due to earlier, broader species concepts, as well as others based on earlier misidentifications or discovered during examination of herbarium material of their host plants. These taxa are fully reported here. In addition, amendments to nomenclature and taxonomy of other British species which have occurred since the monography by Mordue & Ainsworth (1984) are summarised.

Preparation of fungal material for microscopical examination of their conidiogenous structures is described below. A modification to the existing methods used coupled with a sporulation medium has proved to be simple to use and successful for the induction of sporulation and subsequent examination of conidiogenous structures in a range of xylariaceous species and in endophytic fungi.

Water moulds (oomycetes) of the order Saprolegniales, such as Saprolegnia and Aphanomyces species, are responsible for devastating infections on fish in aquaculture, fish farms and hobby fish tanks. Members of the genus Saprolegnia cause Saprolegniosis, a disease that is characterised by visible white or grey patches of filamentous mycelium on the body or fins of freshwater fish. Up till 2002, Saprolegnia infections in aquaculture were kept under control with malachite green, an organic dye that is very efficient at killing the pathogen. However, the use of malachite green has been banned worldwide due to its carcinogenic and toxicological effects and this has resulted in a dramatic re-emergence of Saprolegnia infections in aquaculture. As a consequence Saprolegnia parasitica is now, economically, a very important fish pathogen, especially on catfish, salmon and trout species, and warrants further investigation to develop new alternative control strategies.
